Equally disturbing are the morons who appear to be cheering while a player lies motionless on the ice. I understand the quick reactive cheer for a big hit but to continue while a player is out is just poor taste.

Many (not all) Portland fans are terrible in this regard. It's kind of like watching the Flyers play in Philadelphia, where they can do no wrong, but as soon as someone gets hit hard or loses a fight, the "A******" cheers start up.

I watched Portland live here about 2 weeks ago. I was amazed by how well structured they were for such a talented team - my reaction on their first goal was that it was an absolutely perfect hockey play. If I drew up a goal, that's how it would look. And once they got ahead by a few goals, the star players (not naming anyone in particular) started their antics. It began with the slamming of sticks onto the ice whenever they were checked, and followed up with diving (penalties were even assessed), throwing heads back anytime a stick was within 5 feet of their face, and by the end of the game, at EVERY single whistle, one of the Winterhawks was barking at the refs. I have really never seen anything like it - and I'm talking about a league which employs Kevin Constantine. I could not believe that the refs let it go on for so long, or put up with the nit picking as much as they did.

As a generally unbiased fan of the league (I simply have to be that way), I was completely put off by the act and the swagger with which they carried themselves. As you saw in the video, the reaction of the commentators (and the fans) was that this hit was somehow justified because Brendan Leipsic had been hit a few times earlier in the game. Not having seen complete game footage, I have to be honest and say that these were probably clean hits (the WHL officials are pretty good), but that Leipsic was playing them up and getting the hometown treatment here.

At any rate, the entire thing is ridiculous - right up to the many Portland fans that I know calling this a clean, legal hit, and claiming conspiracy from the league. Basically, since he was hit earlier in the game, this hit was justified. I kid you not, that's the general thought from the Portland fans right now.

Former Jacket Marc Methot turning into a healthy scratch in Ottawa.

In the grand tradition of main board overreactions...looks like we won that deal.

Following another main board tradition, there's a thread asking for a top six forward in trade!

Both of these comments made me laugh ... mainly because they are accurate.

2 goal comeback to tie the game late by the Rnagers. Lead by John Moore (2 assists) and Brass (Game tieing goal).

I'll take everyone's word on the video, I'm sure it is disturbing. My opinion on these crushing hits is the same for hockey or football. You will not see any real rule changes until someone dies on the field or the ice. This is not 1950 anymore where all the players are "normal" size. I would venture a guess (because I really am too lazy to research) that the average player is probably 2-3 inches taller and 15-20 pounds heavier than even those that played in the '80s and '90s. Combine that with faster players and it's going to happen.

The great Blackhawks defenseman Moose Vasko earned his nickname because of his monstrous size. He was 6'2" and 200 pounds.

And he played as late as 1970.

I like physical play, but some of the hits in both sports I see today, I come away asking if some of these hits are even necessary. Frankly, it has become sort of sickening to see an unsuspecting player get blown up and the injuries they have to endure. For sure in hockey hits from behind have to stop and in football, hits with the crown of the helmet (regardless of point of contact) have to stop. I know that both sports have taken some steps, but I don't think you'll see real change until something very unfortunate happens.

Bingo.

There's also an ongoing discussion of when exactly "finishing your checks" became commonplace. For a long time, it was thought to be the height of undisciplined play because it meant taking yourself out of defensive position to hit someone who wasn't even a part of the play. Then it became something about "sending a message", and here we are.

Ranger fans all over Nash in last nights post game thread. Seems like he is still the inconsistent guy he was here.

Snipe isn't the right word for it. It was a bounce off the boards right to his stick, all he had to do was lift it.

I don't agree. I'm far from a fan of his, but the shot came from a very tight angle and hit the far top corner. A snipe, in fact, the kind of play he makes about every two months, or so.

For those who keep tabs or have an interest in this sort of thing: Nail Yakupov is currently a -26 for the Oilers.

Cam Talbot 8-2 with fantastic numbers as Rangers backup; Lundqvist struggling with an 8.5 mill 7 year ( I think) contract extension just signed. Luongo Part II? Interesting thing is that Talbot is a UFA season after next. If current trends continue Rangers have a BFP (big problem) on their hands.

The weird thing is that the situation (Talbot outplaying Lundqvist) started well before the signing. And they still signed him to that humongous deal.

As of the moment, the Jackets seem to have a nice lock on being the league-averagiest of all the league-average teams in terms of scoring stats

http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/CBJ/2014.html

17th in Goals For (101 compared to league average of 103), 17th in Goals Against (106 compared to 103), 18.18% power play compared to league average of 18.11%, 23/126 on the penalty kill for 81.75% compared to league average of 23/127 for 81.89%. 4 shorties for, 3 against compared to averages of 3 and 3.

Obviously the big issue is that the team is at 36 points instead of a league average of 43...

But given everything that's happened so far this season, I'll take being league average at Christmas.

And 11-7-4 in the last 22 games isn't bad either.
