Fun Stat that doesn't mean much. RNH is -9 through 4 games.

The Oilers are terrible. Even in the darkest days of the Maclean era, the Jackets were never this poorly run or inept. The NHL should come in and take over the hockey operations of the team. I'm (mostly) not joking here. It's sad to watch all this talent go there to die.

Understand your point and, thankfully, there will never be a consideration of this tactic. The 'Yotes situation was unique and should remain that way. Poor franchises, however, are not unique in sports and the league should do nothing unless their financials start to become an issue.

The players are free to force the issue of a move as they hit RFA or wait until UFA.

You can look at Edmonton's roster and quickly realize there is a problem, to your point. Their goalie situation is very poor.

Schultz is going to be quite a player, but that's a lot of minutes and pressure for quite a young guy. It would be one thing if their defense was good and he just came in and took their minutes. He's getting the minutes by default.

I watch the Oilers frequently, and it has become an exercise in diagnosis. This year I actually think their defence has been improved, but their forwards' defence is still terrible and their goaltending is way worse.

The talent seems to try and play way too much of an East-West game rather than the North-South positional game. I saw versus the Caps the Caps' forecheckers just chased after the East-West Oilers until the puck was deep in the Oilers' end, and a couple of bounces later its in the net. The young Oilers need to learn that when you're under pressure in the neutral zone, sometimes just chipping it ahead is a better play than trying to do endless circles. The puck behaves in unexpected ways, be careful! But they are like Wiz: they have magic, but don't know how to turn it off.

It should make us appreciate having guys like Umberger, Foligno and Dubinsky. Those guys can play big minutes, get the puck deep, and shut down opponents, Edmonton has none of it.

From Elliotte Friedman:

Monday morning, Yakupov told Edmonton reporters, "I don't really like playing without the puck, skate all the time and do forecheck and hit somebody every shift... I don't think it's my game."

Sound a bit familiar?

Who does it remind you of?

Its quite possible Edmonton already regrets drafting Yak. As an Oilers fan I was really hoping they'd take Murray or trade for a franchise defender, but alas, Katz stepped in to insist they take Yak.

Max "Matt Cooke ain't got nothin on me!" Lapierre and Brent Burns may both be facing lengthy suspensions after tonight. Can't find available video now; Dan Boyle taken off on a stretcher after being knocked unconscious on a hit from behind by Lapierre. Later in the game, Burns out-muscled Brenden Morrow and knocked him low into the boards.

The Lapierre hit was the worse of the two ... should be interesting to see where Shanahan's suspension darts hit the board on these.

While not downplaying the seriousness of Boyle's apparent injury (update says he is moving extremities, etc) I have trouble deciding whether this should be suspendable. I see guys hit from behind all the time and no penalty called. What makes this one different is the guy was close to the boards but to me the reason he was injured was that he hit his chin on the boards because of the curvature. Had the hit occurred closer to the red line probably no injury. Close call but at game speed hard to determine where the boards start to curve.

Part of the reason he hit his chin on the board was the elbow on the back of his head pressing him down and into it. At least, that's what I saw.

It's almost like players should peel off from hitting someone in the numbers when they're in the vicinity of the boards.

There was no elbow on the Lapierre hit. Just a push on the numbers. Its a bit of a flukey injury because of the angle he went in on, but I see no need to debate whether it was deliberate or careless on Lapierre's part: if you injure a guy I have no problem with a suspension regardless of the intent.

I'm perfectly willing to be wrong about how it went down.

John Moore scored tonight and Brassard got an assist on the 2nd Ranger goal. 2-0 lead for NYR right now

Losing Moore still irks, that kid is going to be a solid top pairing guy with wheels. Keeping him would have set us on the blue line for years (Murray, Moore, Erixon).

Hold on there. Moore is going to be a solid defenseman but not nearly top pairing, not on a good team anyway. Solid 4-5 dman.

Tonight's Rangers game somewhat solidifies a point I made earlier in this thread - the Jackets need to pick up some points while teams like the Rangers, Flyers, and Capitals are struggling. At least two of those teams are going to pick up the pace at some point and get their seasons together.

Report: Oilers, Sabres working on major trade

there was talk Wednesday afternoon that the Sabres were working on a deal with Edmonton that would send Ryan Miller or Thomas Vanek and possibly both to the Oilers in a package that would bring Nail Yakupov and more to Buffalo. Whether it actually happens is another story. But as it stood Wednesday, the two sides had considered, or were considering, a major swap.

That would certainly solve their goaltending issues. It wouldn't, however, change the fact that they play like a men's league team.

Just get to 97+ points and let the rest take care of itself. I don't care who gets hot, other teams are going to rise and other teams are going to fall.

I have no idea why people keep babbling on about the Flyers.

You've got, at least, two or three bubble team or pretenders sitting in a playoff spot right now.
