I remember reading an article about the Rangers soon after Torts was let go. It was picking the Rangers to be a team that could be in for a fall. The reason was that Torts deserved a lot of credit for their success with his disciplined defensive structure in front of Lundqvist.
The point of the article was that if the new coach opened things up, giving the players more freedom, the defensive scheme would suffer, often leaving Lundqvist at the mercy of opposing shooters. The hockey world would get to see exactly how good of a goalie he would be without the defensive cover that Torts system gave him, especially considering how many starts he will get facing a lot more shots.
Now I am not agreeing with any of this, but it seems interesting that at this early stage we are, perhaps, seeing that scenario play out a bit. I think that the Rangers are a good squad, and will right the ship, but that article was the first thing that came to my mind after these two blow-outs of the Rangers.
