So what is Gillies' situation heading into the season? I read somewhere that with the 2nd year of his contract going into a one-way deal, he'd need to go through waivers to be sent down to the A. Capfriendly lists him as a non-roster goalie though (which may change to start the year?).

If he does need waivers to be sent down, what do we think will happen? We can't afford to keep 3 goalies and he probably wouldn't bring much back in a trade. Do we risk waivers? Are waivers even a risk? How many teams would claim a 25 year old goalie with 12 NHL games experience? Ottawa, Buffalo maybe :dunno:

First, top reading The Win Column, it's sheer and utter f***ing garbage.

Second, Gillies is waiver eligible, but there is little to no risk of him being taken, I mean just look at the names of goaltenders that will be getting waived, he'd be lucky to crack the top 10.

The risks to claim a goalie off waivers this year are Colorado and Columbus. One of DeSmith or Jarry will be waived by the Pens, Domingue and Condon will be waived by the Lightning. One of Reimer or Forberg in Carolina. One of Sparks or Subban in Vegas.... etc.

The real question is what we will go with goaltending in the AHL. Gillies cannot be sent to the ECHL, but Parsons and Zagidulin can., but Gillies can be loaned to another organization or he could be traded after he clears waivers.

I think Gillies will be waived and I think Treliving and Murray Edwards would be overjoyed to see him claimed. Opens up a spot in Stockton for Zag/Parsons and saves the team $700k in real dollars.

I can’t see anyone claiming him though.

Regardless of where it was written, it's still something worth discussing, but your usual condescension is not unexpected.

Even though the waiver risk may be low, it's still a risk. He's not an asset I imagine the Flames would be happy to see go for nothing and with the amount of goalies in the hopper, it's not like he there's lots of places he can go (as you said).

He is so good that the risk is bigger if they do not waive him :naughty:

I think Gillies can still carve out a career as a backup, but not with us. McElhinney looked useless here, and turned into a good backup. But he needed a different organization, and to move on. I think that may be the case with Gillies

I still think Irving could have been a good backup for us. We rushed him way to fast.
Magic Johnson would have been the best... And, playing hockey, he wouldn't have contracted the HIV because everyone knows that hockey players are immune.

If Ehlers is in play as the rumors suggest, I am much more curious to know if Hamonic+ is what is being discussed. Hamonic fits better for fixing the hole left after Trouba was moved than Brodie does.

Yes, it sucks more to move a guy like Hamonic IMO, but that significant loss on the back end is offset by the talent influx on forward.

A move like this does have to be brokered though as we'd have to move forward cap to be compliant with more cap coming in from Ehlers and still needing to sign Tkachuk and Mangiapane. I have mentioned before that Mangiapane would be a guy I'd consider looking into if I need to move a body. I'd consider moving him instead of Janko.

It'll be very interesting for sure.

Lol at Jets moving Ehlers for a Russel clone about to become a UFA.

If Vali wasnt injured I'd offer Hanifin for Ehlers.

Hanifin is better than Ehlers.

That contract is a steal

That would be the ask, and I wouldn’t do that trade either.

If Hammer or Brodie had term there could be a deal to be had perhaps, but both are on the final year of their contracts. No chance Winnipeg bites at that.

It's called having an extension as part of the deal.

I'm not saying that it's Ehlers for Hamonic straight up. I'm saying Hamonic with extension is around half the value necessary to pry Ehlers out.

Why does everyone say that a team won't bite on gaining a player because their are on the last year of their contract. A team would have either think they have don't have the ability to re-sign a player or that they won't be able to pay him what he wants. The former indicates bad management, the latter that they are getting a play of value.

I agree with you, but to play devil's advocate, the last two big-name rentals that have played for the Jets walked in the off-season so they might be hesitant in trading Ehlers for a guy + picks who wouldn't stick around. But I think if it came to Hamonic, he would very likely re-sign in Winnipeg

Edit: it would be Hamonic + picks not the other way around

He had specifically asked for a trade TO Winnipeg a few years ago. I think that was for a personal matter that does not seem to be an issue now, but he had a desire to play there to be closer to family, I don't think he'd be looking for a quick opportunity to leave.
