Idea: 3 way trade for Flames to become cap compliant.

Calgary, downgrades RD to Honka and becomes cap compliant with a young RD option: (Hamonic 3.8 mil vs Honka 1.4 IIRC)
In: Julius Honka +?
Out: Hamonic w/ extension

Winnipeg, Acquires a RD at a reasonable cap hit to replace Trouba's contributions on the right side, may also be helpful if Buff requires an extended leave of absence:
In: Hamonic
Out: ??

Dallas, Honka wants out. Just get fair value for him:
In: ??
Out: Honka + ?

Thoughts? Any idea how the remainder of the trade could look like? (I don't know what Dallas' needs are and I'm not sure what Winnipeg's cap situation is like if they add Hamonic). I guess Dallas could maybe throw in way more value and be the team to target Ehlers if Jets need to move cap to be compliant?

Hanifin - Andersson
Kylington - Honka

Calgary, Alberta
Eric always has that melodramatic spin. He rivals Spector in Edmonton for being the biggest dufus covering a team. Mangiapane has made a 'concession'? He, or his agent, have over valued himself and he is in danger of sitting the year out if Tre decides he has someone better. I'll bet on the latter. $850K is still a tad high in my view. Quine makes $735. Dube $778. I'll bet DSP will sign for the league minimum.

Saving 100k isn't worth losing this player. He broke out after the all star break and I think he has 20 goal potential.

Hamonic a Russel close?

Well I guess the quota for the dumbest thing posted on the internet was down.

Horrible take.

Lol

Russell was loved on this board when he was a Flame. Warrior, shot blocker, stand up guy. Going forward, Hamonic will have very little to offer beyond that.

He and Noah "better than Ehlers" Hanifin were utterly destroyed by Colorado.

Well, that's why he's on the 3rd pairing in my suggestion. A huge part of Hamonic to Honka is assets and cap space. Honka is someone relatively replaceable but not bargain bin level on the 3rd pairing.

You do realize that Hanifin Is younger, scored at a higher rate 5 on 5, is a defenceman and his career will likely last much longer because he’s a smooth skating D?

Ehlers helps us on the PP... or does he? Because who are you taking off for Ehlers.

It’s honestly a terrible trade. If you can justify trades after 5 game samples then by all means we should trade everyone of our players for lesser talents

Trade proposal -

Frolik, Jankowski to CBJ for Riley Nash, Markus Hannikainen

Flames get 2.475 cap relief. Blue Jackets get the better players and get out of Nash's last contract year.

Gotta give up something to get that cap space needed for Tkachuk. At least Nash can play center and RW.

I wonder if Ottawa would do something like:

Frolik, Jankowski, 2019 3rd for Connor Brown.

They take on some salary, but Frolik is a warrior they can definitely move when the deadline comes. Jankowski fits into the age group they're looking for, RFA (like essentially all their team) and plays centre. The third adds to the obscene amount of picks they have over the next 2 years.

On Calgary's end, we get a naturally righty who has shown some signs of being able to play a middle six role, while also getting a much needed 3.875M cap savings. That'd be more than enough to sign Chucky and Mangi. But it would require some commitment to playing Lindy at the 2C.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Bennett
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Mangiapane/Dube
Lucic/Mangi/Dube - Backlund - Brown
Lucic/Mangi/Dube - Ryan - Rieder/DSP/Whomever

Salary Cap could remain at 81.5m for 2 more years.
Friday night’s Marner signing also comes against the backdrop of the collective bargaining discussions between the NHL and NHL Players’ Association, which bear watching. While nothing has yet been agreed upon between those parties, sources with knowledge of the talks believe the salary cap could end up being frozen at its current $81.5-million ceiling for two more years — or raised only minimally — as a way to lower players’ escrow payments.

if this is true, it could really impact our window.

Didn't we see a sizeable increase in the cap when Vegas came in? Seems odd they wouldn't do the same for Seattle.

In essence, the expansion draft will also free up some cap space for every team in the league. Replacing them with guys on ELCs will be the goal and why it's imperative we stop trading high picks.

Could you imagine how screwed we'd be right now if we traded a couple of our young Dmen + picks for Mark Stone

It's fine to stay as is if you don't want to win.

Bad for us. Our contention window and the cap remains flat.

Hmm... but we have all our core players locked in already all at reasonable cap hits. Treliving is also money on RFAs so we should be able to have a solid go for quite a few years while other teams are required to do much more massive retools. All teams are affected, but I feel like we're going to be less affected than many other teams. That's what I mean.

Flames are actually in really good shape to ride out a stagnant cap. After Tkachuk (assuming he signs for five or more years), the next big free agent situation they have to deal with is Gaudreau and Giordano in the 2022 off season. By then, the new US TV deal money will have kicked (speculated to increase the cap by 5M to 10M by itself, unless the CBA changes the formula). And with Giordano's deal expiring at the same time, it'll be quite easy for the Flames to basically double Gaudreau's contract.

All it really means is that Treliving can't go big name hunting in unrestricted free agency and that's really more of a blessing than anything else.
