There has been speculation that Stan Bowman and Coach Q have had a falling out. Analysts have pointed out that the firing of Mike Kitchen is the writing on the wall that Quenneville likely won't be back with Chicago.

What would be the appeal for Q to come to Calgary when there are likely going to be a few more desirable options open to him this off-season?

Which are the more desirable options? Who else is firing their coach and has a roster with this much skill? Not to mention there are two (potentially three) guys under contract here that he's won a cup with, and Johnny/Mony is pretty easy to compare to Kane/Toews.

Top of the list would be NYR, big city, likely big pay, a team that has already stated they are going to rebuild so a good chance for him to mold the team and have the time needed to build it properly. Also his wife is from Conneticut so chance to get her closer to home.

Oilers because of McDavid.

He is a Francophone Ontarioan (sp?) so would Ottawa be of interest.

He did grow up in Windsor is Detroit a team close to his home that he would be interested in.

Washington could be available, a chance to coach AO and be a guy that if he won with them would be considered a pretty big feat.

Does Pagula back up a Brinks truck that Calgary is unable/willing to match.

The roster may have more skill than many other jobs open but is it likely to win a Cup? I think Q would be looking to do that not have a team more likely to lose in the 1st round than other teams.

Plus there could be a team or two that cans their coach just to get Q that aren't obviously available right now.

New York is kicking off a rebuild, they're not going to hire the #1 coach in the world to waste his time on a lottery roster, and he probably wants nothing to do with that either. Same goes for Ottawa, although they would certainly be more appealing. I think most people realise at this point the Oilers are unfixable, doubt he goes there, especially with Chia in the front office. Detroit is an option but they're still quite a ways from contending so I doubt he wants to go there, either.

Realistically, this is the only roster hiring that Q can look at and say "I could win a Cup with them in the next three years", I think we're the most attractive franchise that would be hiring right now.

If he looks at this roster and thinks he can win a Cup in the next 3 years he is either nuts or has way to high an opinion of himself.

If winning a Cup is his goal then we are definitely out of the running.

Edit: Also is NYR in that much of a worse spot than Toronto was in when Babcock went there? They are maybe a year behind in the rebuild but I do think that now having nothing and starting from scratch is almost more appealing than having a partial rebuild but with questionable parts.

In regards to NYR, they are way behind where Toronto was, considering the owners and management released a statement around the deadline this year that said "yard sale". This team does not have that many gaping holes - it needs another legit top six winger and more depth scoring. The winger can be acquired either via FA or trade, and Quenneville can get more depth production. This roster could do it with him behind the bench. New York, Ottawa and Detroit cannot.

I really do not see what you are seeing.

I think if you are right and Calgary is his best option this off-season that he takes a year off and comes back then when there will be much better options.

This team is about to finish 12th last in the league on merit with questions going forward about its goaltending and a heck of a lot more than one top 6 forward needed to win a Stanley Cup. Quenneville is arguably the best coach in the league considering we have no ties to him personally, are unlikely to break the bank to pay him and don't have an appealing roster or outlook going forward I just don't see what the appeal would be to draw him in to coach the Flames when he will have so many options to choose from.

Were the Calgary Flames sunk by bad play or bad luck this season? - Sportsnet.ca

These stats pretty much say everything you state is false. By the numbers Calgary is a Top 10 team in every advanced stat measure except the PP. Those numbers are only going to get better with Lazar, Tkachuk, Jankowski, Bennett, Kulak and Andersson getting a year more experienced. If Andersson and one of either Valimaki, Kylington, or Wotherspoon prove themselves in training camp maybe a Stone, Brodie or even Hamonic become expendable.

This team really does have the potential to be this years Winnipeg Jets. The arrival of a perennial contender.

Vegas highlights the importance of a good coach now why wouldn't coach Q look to Calgary as his next project?

If Raanta makes it to free agency we absolutely need to get him, I don't care if it'll cost us 3,000,000 bucks.
3,000,000 bucks, so $750k AAV for 4 years? Sounds good to me, do it Brad.

But seriously, I wanted that guy on the Flames so bad last offseason. Not that we'd be in a playoff spot even with him now because he's been injured a lot this season, but long term he'd have been the perfect fit. I think he'll re-sign with the Coyotes.

Brad Trevling has done a good job and when I said that it was not a shot at Brad Trevling.

My biggest squarels with Brad Trevling are the Hamonic trade, this was not a smart decision. Even from the start there was no need to waste assets on D because we had a pretty good Defense and had some good defensive prospects, so why waste the assets on Defense, when we needed help up front. The signing of Brouwer is not great but we did not give any assets and that contract will run out.

I'm torn on this. On the one hand, the Flames still had some decent defense. On the other hand, if one of the big three get injured, suddenly that D core is shit. I think what will really impact how people view that trade is what happens in the next year or two. As these prospects develop and start to fight for a spot, will Treliving be willing to cash in and trade someone to make room? He may have paid a lot for Hamonic, but the the fact is a top 4 RHS dman is a valuable asset. If Andersson moves up and earns a top 4 spot, we could see one of Hamilton or Hamonic dealt.

I bet you Q would find it very attractive. Like Bruce Boudreau found us very attractive before. But other than Brent Sutter the Flames ownership has gone to the bargain bin for coaches.

Those stats are crap.

We did not lose because of bad luck at all this year, this was a mediocre team that played poorly. We are not close to a top 10 team at all and most of those guys you listed are not guys that make a difference at the NHL level.

Winnipeg had a lot more and better young guys coming into their line-up. We don't have a guy like Kyle Connor who is going to come into the line-up next year, we aren't going to see a goaltending performance improvement like Hellebuyck had, we don't have a defenseman ready to take a jump like Morrissey took. Our core is basically already maxed out in terms of production now and aren't going to take a big jump either.

Q wouldn't take this team on as his next project because we aren't close to contending, aren't in a strong position to build into a contender, aren't likely to pay him a ton of money, don't have any personal or professional connections to draw him here.

At this point I will be both sad and disappointed if GG isn't fired before season end; interviews and play from our team last night suggest they are mentally drained and done. There would be no easier day to fire a coach than today, after the last few games, during a playoff "push."

That said, Tre likes to analyse things to death, so he probably won't make a move in what could come off as an impulsive decision; here though a message needs to be sent, and impulsive or not he needs to send it or pack his own bags.

I agree with your assesment, hopefully one of young guys is ready to step in.

You are right, Coach Q might not come here(if he is let go), would you be happy with Darryl Sutter?(if Coach Q cannot be had.)

Because of the extra year on Gulutzans contract I could see us promoting Gulutzan to assistant executive coach and have Conroy/Gelinas be the executive coach/ AGM. Then maybe graduate the AHL coach to NHL coach. King also gets a name change to head of non-profit operations somewhere in the fine print to help with the arena funding.

If they bring in another crap coach like GG, than he would be ok with but if they are bringing in a vetran coach, than there is no chance he agrees to this.

I would love Sutter but I doubt that he comes back with his history with the team.

Time heals all wounds, I think he would like it here. He is not far from here, he has a history here, I think he would fine with coming here.

Listening to the Fan 960 and they had John Shannon on, he said Darryl has offer from 2 teams but he did not name the teams.

I do not think Sutter is a candidate. I really think Gully's fate is going to largely hinge on who is available this offseason. But he should be immediately let go IMO.
