I’m curious about this mystical cheap, RHS centre Conroy is searching for. Who could that be

I do want us to start taking shots at reclamation projects. Not Curtis Lazar dead ends but someone like Krebs or Glass is low cost, high reward

He's a lefty but I would do some bad things to get Mason McTavish on this team. Kind of a just OK start of his NHL career so far. Maybe the Ducks are looking for some vets to make a push for a playoff spot next year and can get talked into a deal revolving around Kadri & McTavish. I'm sure we have a vet or two that can be talked into riding into the sunset on Sunset rather than McLeod Tr.

It seems everyone is anti deadline addition. I kind of am too, but I wouldn't mind seeing us weaponize the cap space we have to take on a useful player that's overpaid for the rest of this season and next.

I think our 2 biggest issues are playing a #7/8 defenseman on our 2nd pairing in Miro or Hanley. Hanley has been the better or the two, but is still not anything remotely close to a top 4. Could we weaponize the cap space and add a guy like Chiarot? I get he's a below average top 4 defenseman, but he's better than what we have and perhaps Detroit would throw us a 3rd or 4th to take him. Something like that could be a smart move.

The other obvious hole is center. I don't think I'd want to pay what it'll take to fix that. I'd roll with our current centers unless an opportunity like Krebs for a 3rd or something like that pops up. I'm doubtful it does.

f*** it trade for Erik Karlsson

Its worth noting that the Flames only have one retention spot - I forgot they retained salary in the Markstrom deal.

Could be a better opportunity that comes along, maybe better than a 3rd.
Huh? Teams get 3 retention slots, Calgary has 2 available to use.

Unless we retain on an Andersson trade we are better off using those slots to broker deals for other teams. Retaining on Kuzmenko is kind of pointless since his cap hit will be 80% prorated at the deadline to just over 1M. Most teams can afford to add that and Calgary can easily take on a contract going the other way too.

I think its less likely the Flames retain on a contract and very likely they take a cap dump back. For example taking back an overpaid but serviceable defenseman bolsters the roster and is something ownership probably would not blink at.

The returns for playing the middle man for retention aren’t worth it. When he mentioned weaponizing cap space I think he was talking about doing Monahan type deals but those haven’t really occured

Hey guys, Avs fan coming in piece.

Lots of chatter on the Avs board about bringing Kadri back now that Rants is gone. He's got everything we need basically. Curious what the cost would be of brining him and Andersson into the fold, and if Conroy would even be interested.

My thoughts were Mittlestadt + Ritchie + 2nd for Kadri + Andersson which would seem to be a good deal for both sides. Mitts has been struggling but he was great down the stretch and to start the year for the Avs. I just don't think we can have the patience for him to figure it out and we have too many pass-first guys at the moment.

Would love Ritchie and swapping Kadri for Mitts would probably be a good thing for the franchise long term given the last year or two of Kadri’s contract might not be great (easy to buyout though)

Just can’t see Flames management doing it with the team sitting where they are in the standings though

Todd Button was high on Draisatl. I know the Button family
More so pointing out that nothing is guaranteed. We picked the 2nd best player of 2016, with 6th OA. Arguments could be made for Monahan being a top 3 player out of 2013 too, prior to injuries at least. While I'll agree that a top 3 pick would be amazing, it really comes down to timing and getting that pick at the right moment.

You can draft 1st overall and get a Mcdavid or a Matthews or a Celebrini. You can also get a Slafkovsky or a Yakupov or a Power

Yes your odds are greatly increased of getting a franchise changing player but there are no guarantees. And you might have to be really bad for a really long time before you luck into one (see: decade of darkness)

Even after eventually lucking into McDavid despite having the most insane lottery luck in sports history, the oilers still have nothing to show for it. Yes they will be a contender for awhile still, but even that doesn’t guarantee them a cup

Then you have half a dozen other examples where the teams are still in the gutter

I think we're fully going to try and make PO's now. Doubt we move either of those.
But you could have Kuznetsov!

I'd do it, but I might be in the minority here. As others mentioned, our FO is unlikely to trade either of them with the Flames in the WC race, and I can't really blame them with the positon we're in. Might as well go for the playoffs if we're losing our first rounder to Montreal.

Not for that return. Conroy wouldn’t move Andersson for that return let alone adding Kadri. He still hopes that they can squeak into a wildcard spot

What exactly is the breakdown of your value here? I could see Mitts and a 2nd for Kadri but I don't see Calgary doing Andersson for Ritchie 1 for 1

I’m not ignoring those years. If you actually watched we won meaningless games that dropped us out of the top 3 in those years. A win against Nashville got us Sam Bennett instead of Draisatl. Flames have never picked in the top 3 ever. That’s a problem. Because top 3 is where the best players get drafted. I’m entitled to my beliefs and you can have your own. But after 30 years of being a fan I’m frustrated with the same shit.
you're objectively wrong and your beliefs are based on media-created fairy tale about rebuilding the right way, and misplaced frustration at having not won the cup in 30 years. get over it. The championship is incredible hard to win and really should only occur once in 31 years or more, anyway.

Yep. Creating a championship team is not completely within anyone's control. When it magically happens, teams will usually win 2-3 cups. Based on that the average drought is going to be like 50 years at least.
