Remember that NYR cleared all the cap space too. That matters.

Most deals you have to take cap hit back and now the NYR can allocate that money to another guy...likely Shattinkirk.

So for them, #7, Angelo, Shatty > Stepan+ Raanta

Who are New Yorks top 3 centers next season?

Even a broken clock is right twice a day...

A low end first line center is better than not having a first line center at all. Ideally, Stepan gets bumped down to the second line by one of Arizona's prospects breaking out, but adding a consistent 55 pt center to Arizona is a big addition.

Yeah you have young forwards, but you have no prospects or up and coming young players. You're goalie and most important player is showing his age and your defense is getting old quick. Just stating the average age of your roster doesn't tell the story of what's really going on with the rangers.

You know who our top goaltending prospect is. We have had this discussion before Your hatred for the Rangers doesn't allow you to make an objective statement.

Our defense isn't all that old. McDonagh, Skjei, DeAngelo. Graves, Bereglazov and a few others will be competing for spots in camp.

I'm coming around to this move. My initial reaction was to kill it with fire. Turns out we were wrong on what to expect. Although I didn't think Stepan for Strome + 7 was all that much. Surely adding Raanta in the mix we should have also gotten the 35th back in the trade.

I don't like the deal because I feel like we should have had more since we included Raanta. On its own it isn't terrible. Not good but not bad.

I think Yotes fans will be very happy with Stepan in after a few games.

This frees up cap space for Rangers, it also leaves a hole at centre, I could see them going after Duchene now, 7th overall and Buchnevich?

Perhaps not, but they're a worse team down the middle than they were yesterday.

I don't disagree with that, but I'll wait for my final assessment of the team once free agency is done.

This is just a moment in time and to me, trading Stepan was the right move. I don't think we could afford Stepan as our 2 C IF we were to get a "proper" 1C.

Have you seen Igor Shestyorkin play? There's also Wall, Huska. Halverson and Skapski are still in the system...lots of promising young goalies working their way through.

At D, there's Graves and now Pionk. There' Sergei Zborovsky. They added Bereglazov from the KHL.

Up front, it's a bit more barren. There's Nieves and Kovacs, but we have also been able to supplement with UDFAs and young FAs like Vesey and Hayes. Sather is gone. Gorton understands the need to build properly.

With Girardi bought out, Klein possibly retiring, the Rangers D has gotten younger.

McDonagh is 27. Skjei is 23. Bereglazov is 23. Holden just turned 30. DeAngelo is 21. Marc Staal is 30. Brendan Smith is 28. That defense is not old, and even for the guys who are getting to the other side of 30, the team still has Graves and Pionk who will be ready.

I think it is a good deal for Arizona what I dont get is why New York did this with their lack of center depth.

Arizona is cleaning house by getting rid of stale voices, and finally supporting their young cast with veterans that know how to play right.

I think this is smart for the development of their young players. Need to learn out to win.

Obviously good value for the Rangers here. Just not sure whos going to play center for them

Get younger, faster, and clear cap space, and a talented young RD. If there isn't someone available at 7 that the rangers like (i.e. Makar), there will be another team that might bite at it for a C that fits the rangers system better

So if NYR signs Shattenkirk and goes in with those as their centers are they really any better off?? I just dont get it.

Depending upon what happens, Miller may shift back to center. It was his original position and he played there occasionally last year.

I get this for Arizona, they have a lot of great youth/prospects already, and are willing to trade some young pieces to improve today. Hammer, Stepan and Raanta do make them a lot better, might be enough for them to push for the playoffs.

For NYR, this makes less sense to me. They're trying to win now, right? How are they going to do that with terrible centre depth? Also, 7th overall sounds like a sexy pickup, but this is a pretty garbage draft, it's not as valuable as it seems. I'm not a huge fan of DeAngelo either. Hopefully there are more moves coming that make use of the cap space they freed up, if not this is a bit of a head scratcher.
