Well I guess he has something to prove now considering how people are talking about him so even with that logic the idea hes going to pack it in as you think he is for the rest of his career just seems outlandish to me.

People were talking about him after the Columbus loss. I don't have a link to the articles, but Dubas had some quotes basically saying it was nuts that people were calling out Marner. He also made mention about how the team needed to be harder to play against. A year later and absolutely nothing changed. Who do we blame for that?

It's not a problem having elite young superstars.

I agree. I wish the Leafs had some young elite playoff performers. But they don't. They have young elite regular season performers. And they have young elite players who are paid like they are young elite playoff performers. But sadly don't have any ACTUAL young elite playoff performers.

They also don't have an elite GM or coach anymore. So that's a problem.

And it's only going to get worse.

He finally brings in a capable backup and tried to groom him to be a starter. Okay fine. But now he's in a position where if Campbell does have a good season he's going to have to pay him $5M a year. In the same year that Reilly is going to be looking for $7-9M. So this losing depth is not ending any time soon. Team will continue to get worse unless a bunch of rookies suddenly become studs.

All stems from being reckless with the cap on the core four.

Just to be clear. When were you more optimistic?

Absence of a larger sample doesn't mean that the smaller sample is more indicative or should be used to make such critical decisions. Before this year everyone said the same stuff about Nylander that they are saying about AM and MM. Then he produced - they could have traded him off of a small sample size, but made the correct decision to hold onto him.

Maybe it means they can't play post-contract - but I don't think 12 games (and some of those 12 they played well anyway, within the series - even though as a whole they didn't play well) is nearly enough to make that determination.
Nylander didn’t take us to the second round. This is a team game and the team with the better team wins a series. With our current salary structure we don’t have a team, we have 4 amigos.

They are the exact same players in both the regular season and playoffs, and there is no basis with which to conclude that it's not the right mix of players, or that this strategy doesn't work.

5 years of first round exits. Playoff hockey is a different beast
Embarrassing heartless losses
Team members calling the team out for being to easy to play against
GM and coach indicating they need a killer instinct, need to stand up for eachother, need more grit, etc
How many more years of failure do you need?

very much less. Three years as gm and the team is getting worse by the minute. Before he became gm team was going in the right direction.
Brenden his to oopen his eyes now before he and dubass get fired. and they start are over again

Maybe. Maybe not. Nylander was prepared to sit the season. Matthews 100% would have received an OS from Arizona. Marner may have accepted an OS if he felt he was getting dicked around by Lou.

My honest opinion - and I could be completely on this - which I have been saying on here since the summer of 2018 when almost everyone thought NMM were going to sign cheap contracts, is that Shanahan knew that NMM had a strong dislike of Babs and Lou and were simply not going to play ball. Therefore Shanahan felt that a friendly face might reduce some of animosity and maybe get the kids to be more reasonable. It didn't work.
Matthews getting an offer sheet from Arizona??? Wow that's delusion

At least one. Unless the underlying metrics are still on point. Then run it back!!

That reminds me of the old investing line of "The market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent." And here we are where maybe if you simulate this team on a computer...they eventually win with this current line-up...but that may be so far in the future that you (the GM) are long gone anyways.

I'm probably in the minority here but I don't think the Leafs will even make the playoffs next year and I couldn't give a Dubas shit if they don't.

I think this is entirely possible.

They are relying on a goalie who has not played more than 30 games in a season. Injury is highly likely.

Justin Bourne and JD Bunkis had an interesting chat about Kyle Dubas behind the scenes and how emotional and temper tantrum-y he can be (July 26th epsiode) and how he'll fly off the handle from time to time to time. Never heard of him talked about in those ways before, since his public persona is always the well polished young compassionate innovator. Really touched on how he's very defensive.

Oh man, you ain’t in the minority, Florida and Tampa are 1000% ahead of us. Mentioning those teams and ours seems like an insult. Tampa’s 3rd line is probably as useful as our 2nd line in the playoffs. Florida has the better top 9 as wel. Boston is also better, until they actually fall off, they will make the playoffs. Wildcard spot has 2 of the following from the metro Pittsburgh, Washington, Philadelphia, New York Rangers , New York Islanders, Carolina, along with Montreal us and maybe Ottawa. I don’t think dubas can build a better team than he did last year without making a significant move, and we all know that ain’t happening

I'm no dubas fan but how do these guys have this insider info on dubas behavior in a closed team setting

Is this hearsay or something observed by reputable inside members if the organization

It's so true he's so emotionally involved that he's blinded.

Well, Justin Bourne was a video coach with the Toronto Marlies when Dubas was running the team between 2015 and whenever, so the conversation was framed as, what's he like behind the scenes.
