Glad we dodged the bullet on Fleury; and so far have been pleasantly surprised by both Samsanov and Murray in the very small sample size we have.

I'd trade it all though for an A+ winning performance in the playoffs that wins us a round or two though.

So you’re writing off Fleury as garbage after 13 games, and he hasn’t been completely awful.

Yes, I am happy with the quality of Samsonov and Murray for now, and Kallgren has done his best. What could have been a massive weakness has been a pleasantly reliable part of the team. And weirdly enough it's the high grade offense that seems less reliable.

High grade offense is being weighed down by more money as UFA looms for those players...:sarcasm:

If you complain when there's no reason to complain, don't be shocked if you get called out on it.

Kallgren is our #3 or #4 goalie depending on who you ask. Others have told you to take a look at #3/#4 goalies on other teams before continuing to make yourself look silly, I suggest you take their advice.
No. I don't think I'm rocking the boat too much.

I don't need to do the research on 3/4 goalies in the league. I can use the team statistics:

Toronto Maple Leafs after 22 games played so far:

Kallgren: 9 games played .891 SV%
Samsonov: 8 games played .921 SV%
Murray: 6 games played .921 SV%

Kallgren: 41% of the load
Samsonov: 36% of the load
Murray: 27% of the load

So forgive me if I don't paint a pretty picture of our goalie situation (injured goalies/3rd string goalie who's not great).

BTW Murray didn't exactly set the world on fire today.

3 goals against on 28 shots (.893 SV%)

He also stoned the other team's best shooter in the dying seconds of the game. I absolutely detested the trade when it happened, but maybe just maybe this guy finds his confidence.

This team tends to surprise me when they are missing key players through injury. Seems they play a simpler and more organized game.

Two tenders at .921 is amazing. If they can remain healthy and keep that % in the POs we go far.

Does anyone here track the sv% of opposing teams tenders vs us? I bet it's like .880 - .900

I'm not saying that Murray is a bum.
His challenge is staying healthy.

I'm not going to declare that TOR's goaltending situation is all of a sudden "cured!"

I’m gonna say that it’s about the same I had last year

i don’t have much confidence going into a playoffs series yet with either

You're probably better off that way. That way you can keep on shitting on our 3/4th string guy, ignore what people are telling you and not realize how silly you sound.
He has been pretty solid in my opinion. There was one game he stopped 4 breakaways; however, that gaffe against the Islanders was pretty horrific. I don't mind him as a third stringer, I think there is potential there. Goalies usually peak later.
He's been OK which seems at minimum, satisfactory for a 3rd stringer and probably better than that.

He sure looks confident now and if he keeps playing the way he is now, Dubas is going to look like a genius!

Yeah as good as they've looked, the sample size is still so small and the playoffs are still so far away. I'd say for myself that I'm optimistic at this point, and getting more optimistic with each passing game over the last few weeks but confident, not willing to go quite that far just yet. Don't really know how to compare it to last year but whatever, Campbell's gone so doesn't really matter to me anyway.

Goaltending has been a nice surprise. Here's hoping they keep it up.

Could be worse - Leafs West signed our former netminder to a big contract, and his performance has been very unsatisfactory so far.

nope, exactly what I expected.
good goaltending, with a revolving door for injuries.
Just happy Jack isn't back.

1) Murray is making that trade look like a absolute steal!

2) The only thing I absolutely hate about our goal tending right now is how they are taking multiple jabs with sticks. The other team is taking way too many liberties after the save, and when Kerfoot has been the biggest response to this...they are flirting with another goalie injury.

The Leafs need to send a bigger message that it's not OK to attempt to hurt our goalies. I don't care if they take a couple penalties or lose a game here or there because of it. As a whole, we need our goalies in the playoffs.

I mean.. did you see the Tampa response yesterday to Vas getting bumped. Funny thing is, his own player bumped the Blues player in. INSTANT brawl.

It's part of the reason they are champs. Seen the same happen to our tenders repeatedly and nothing at all.

It was a gamble and they’ve had the tandem for just one game.

Murray has been really good but he’s had spurts before.

The team defense has been a more pleasant surprise.
Team defense has been great considering we have $18M of our defense core injured.

The good thing is that both Murray and Samsonov are playing up to their potential and needed standards, injuries aside of course. But Murray has been a beast when healthy.

The downfall is that it will be hard to fit Samsonov next year. He's a RFA which is great, so the potential of flipping him for a nice return could be ok too.

Murray is a bit better than I had hoped for so far but also got hurt earlier than I expected. How can you feel better about a goaltending tandem when your #1 has chronic injury problems and has already missed more starts that he has played? Samsonov has overachieved, but again, dinky sample and so early. I will start to feel better when Murray shows he can make it through the year without missing more than the odd start. I really just want him good for the last quarter so fingers are crossed that the first MIA was just a random thing like any player might have.

Gio came in as well. They still need to be a little meaner sometimes but their response was better than Minny's ehen Zar nearly killed Fleury

I'm more confident the puck will be stopped. But every time Murray goes down to make a save I always pause for a moment to see if he gets back up or how he gets back up...It's not a nice feeling and annoying thing to pay attention to but I'm hoping it passes the more games he plays.

I can only hope our medical staff took their time with his injury. It happened early enough in the season they really should have given him all the time he needed and more. Rumour is leafs have a solid medical staff so I'm hoping it makes these risky trades for injured players a little less risky.

The Sportnet piece on Murray and how his dad was a lifelong Leaf fan is hopeful.

Him being excited to play for the team they watched growing up adds an element I hadn't considered.
