Are we in Canada paranoid about 2026 or should we not be worried?

How does the U.S. have better goalie scorers? In 2023-2024...

Canada has 3 players with 50 or more goals.
Canada has 7 players with 40 or more goals.

The U.S. has 1 player with 50 or more goals.
The U.S. has 2 players with 40 or more goals.
Think he’s referring to more skilled goal scorers. Down years from both Tkachuk and Robertson. Eichel and Connor likely would have hit 40 if not for injury as well. Jack Hughes was injured for the majority of the season as well and JUST AN ABYSMAL YEAR BY TAGE THOMPSON.

The USA has more historical 40-50 goal scorers. While this is Reinhart and Hyman’s first years breaking 50.

Not to say that Canada has ample 40-50 goal scorers in Mack, Crosby and Point. We cannot disregard the fact that McDavid could have gone for another 60 goal season, but remained passive this season. Also huge breakthroughs from high volume shooters such as Verhaege, Marchesseault and Stamkos continuing to stay in form.our list of 30+ goal scorers outnumbers any nation by a good portion. Certainly not a shortage of goal scorers in Canada though I will admit the top-end of our goal scorers are certainly being challenged by the ole USA

To add on, the future of Canadiangoal scoring is bright. Laf, Byfield, Bedard and Johnston could all reach the 40+ goal club next season.

The look when you cut the grass, it looks amazing, and then you come inside and see the Oilers are up 2-0...

I dno't think he was ever considered a realistic option for our Olympic team.

And yeah, certainly not now.
The only thing that slightly worries me is some quote Mike Babcock had in an interview with Pierre Lebrun in 2020 where he was talking about building an Olympic roster and he said of Nurse “obviously you have to have that guy there” or something to that effect, given Babcock’s former sway around hockey Canada you hope they all don’t think like that

Well, if it's true he was once seen (by one or two execs, perhaps) as an option, a lot can change in four years......good and bad.

Makar, Morrissey, Bouchard, Rielly, Doughty, Weegar, Theodore, Toews, Pietrangelo, Dobson, and that's just off the top of my head.

Probably a few more you'd still slot in ahead of Nurse on a depth chart.

So what is his deal? I had to look up when he played for Canada, but he did with the 2021 WJC team. He's born in Syracuse, NY, but plays for Canada? Why is that? Was he raised in Canada?

"Harley was born on August 19, 2001, in Syracuse, New York,[1] to Edmonton-born parents Brian and Stephanie.[2] He was born into an athletic family as his father and three siblings all play ice hockey. His father played for the University of Alberta while his older brother Stuart played for the Milwaukee School of Engineering.[3] His youngest brother Greg plays Junior "A" ice hockey for the Hearst Lumberjacks.[4] Harley's older sister Emilie played college hockey for Robert Morris University before being drafted into the Premier Hockey Federation.[5] While Harley played much of his youth hockey in Syracuse, he is a dual citizen of the United States and Canada.[3]"

Seems like he got his pick of the countries and chose Canada.

You should be absolutely f***ing terrified. Swayman is proving himself one of the best young goalies in the league under pressure and the team the United States is going to put in front of him will be better than anything he's ever had. Good luck dealing with the Tkachuk's, Hughes', Sanderson, McAvoy, Matthews and anyone else I forgot off the top of my head

What's interesting is that Canada has never lost a best-on-best tournament due to poor goaltending. You could say that Joseph was outplayed by Richter in 1996, and Roy was outplayed by Hasek in 1998, but goaltending wasn't even close to the primary reason Canada lost those tournaments. Even in the abysmal 2006 Olympics, Canada got really strong goaltending from Brodeur and Luongo.

There is a real risk that goaltending will be our downfall in 2025 and 2026. Its our achilles heel, of that I have absolutely no doubt. At this point our best bet is that someone gets hot over a playoff run and the start of 2025-26 and clarifies at least the #1 goaltending spot for us, but I'm not sure that is going to happen. More likely, we'll have a number of B to B+ options (guys like Hill, Binnington) and hope that one or two of of them step up and provide us with a solid tandem option. And batten down the hatches defensively with an emphasis on strong defensive d-men and forwards.

I'm not really concerned about the goaltending at all. People are making way too big a deal of it. Goaltending is voodoo.

And this is a very short tournament. It's not really going to matter who is actually the most talented goalie. It's about who randomly gets hot during the right 2-3 games.

And the teams are thrown together quickly and without much practice time. The goalies will be playing under completely different systems and player tendencies. The reliability/predictability of their performances will be completely different.

As long as they get Babs in to coach a defence first grind system they'll be podiuming with gold
