Are the Rangers too soft?

Miss Prust and Rupp for sure but its funny how guys like Bickel, Asham, Mash and Rupp (when he was here) continue to play when they supply no spark to the team in anyway. When we were healthy id rather play rookies instead of the fighters. It all goes out the window now though with the injuries. Play whoevers healtly

Team toughness was displayed differently last season, in a Rangers way that worked for the team. Its not always about fighting but they had the ability to. Losing prust was a huge hit because he could actually play

Very puzzled by Mashinter.

This team misses Prust, plain and simple. Obviously not for that contract, and on the probable downside of his career, but there is no one on the roster who is close to providing what he did. Powe was a good addition but this team needs more than him and a 35 year old Asham to regulate other teams, or provide a spark, or answer the bell.

All of this talk about a PP coach, maybe bring in Laperierre as a toughenss coach. :sarcasm:

No doubt that if Asham were in the lineup he'd would have done something. Asham is a tough dude and proven fighter. His signing makes a lot more sense than frickin Halpern

This is insane and barbaric.

I'm pretty certain it's a good thing they don't think like this.

No it's not. Think about it from the dirty player's perspective. Right now, if you lay a cheapshot on a guy, you might get what, a 10K fine and miss a few games. Boo freakin hoo. If instead of that, some guy's going to put you in the hospital for a few weeks, and make you miss the rest of the reason, are you still going to make the cheap hit? Probably not.

Being down 3-0 and having one of our top defensemen boarded and injured, it is unacceptable to allow the other team to walk away with 2 points and no injuries.

This is why injuries happen. The players need to police themselves. If the other team runs your guy and injures him, you MUST injure one of their players. If there was more of a response like that in the league, there would be LESS injuries overall. The reason why players go out and hurt other players is because they know there won't be any retaliation.

An eye for an eye until the whole world is blind.

Will you guys stop saying that Pacioretty jumped? He didn't. His feet left the ice after contact which is perfectly legal. Anybody perpetuating this lie makes all Rangers fans look like ignorant revisionists.

That being said, that was a boarding penalty and one with intent. Combined with the fact that Pacioretty has a history of supplemental discipline, and there was an injury on the play, I could see 2 games.

That philosophy is fine when we're talking about foreign policy or capital punishment. Sports is a different world. You put a product on the ice and it's the responsibility of the coach and the players he has entrusted to protect that product.

Nobody is saying they should stand up from themselves. I actually called out Bickel and Mashinter for doing nothing last night.

But to say you out and respond by injuring on their players is something els.

Does 'standing up for themselves' actually work? Or is the only way to prevent the opposition from taking runs at your best players mutually-assured destruction?

Compared to the rest of the league, where do we stand in hits per game? and in blocked shots?

We have the 4th lowest PIM/g.

I don't think we are too soft, I think our fowards haven't been as tight defensively and that our defense corps isn't doing as well either. I don't know how many goals came from bad positioning, but I see stuff that I wasn't last year. If we lead the league in hits and shot blocked and yet have a good PIM/g ratio than our team has been quite smart in 'toughness' departement.

Cole's goal last night is pretty picture perfect of why we haven't been able to 'team defend' quite like last year.

I started a thread two weeks into season about this team being soft and everyone laughed. You could see from the first week this team wasn't the same as last year in the way they played the game.

Do we need a big name scrap to punch our team in the face?

Lately on the main NHL boards a lot of big name high profile players have been scrapping and i think it does more for a team than just defend each other. The Sharks have been slumping and Jumbo Joe (their captain) has had two high profile fights in the past 2 weeks.

Do we need a Ryan Callahan or a Marc Staal to fight another high profile player to show the team that if they won't play for the coach that they should at least play for each other?
