Speculation: Are Matthews and Marner Choke Artists in Playoffs?

Choke is a tough word.
Nobody, no player anywhere wants to give it away or lose on purpose.

They might not engage or maybe simply not be playoff good enough.

That’s why I say the core and how they perform in the playoffs is important. And it may need to change. Even beyond this series. Stop getting wrapped up in regular season flash. You need a core that gets there and then can do something with it.

I don't think you can call them choke artists by any means, however more offense is definitely needed from that line and they don't get a pass on that. They were the second best duo all regular season and have no looked anything like that this playoffs when it comes to producing offense. They have been great in their own end and haven't given the opposition much at all, but they still should be held accountable for not putting the puck in the net more. Bit of a stretch to call them choke artists, but not at all wrong to call them out for not producing this series. We would have no shot against anyone in the final four if they put up this kind of offensive effort.

I just knew Matthews would be included sooner or later.

So now we're trading Rielly, JT, Mitch, Willie and Matthews.
Time to rebuild again I guess?
 
I don't think Matthews is. He was arguably the best player in both the CLB and Boston-2 series. Though this series has been a disappointment so far.

Marner has been underwhelming since game 1 of the Boston-2 series.

If they lose this series alot of the team are chokers. They need to get over the mental hump of winning a series.

All i have to say is that hockey is far more than ppg.
 
Matthews in particular is generating tons of chances and I’d disagree strongly that he’s looked lazy or uninvolved.

I do think Marner is struggling a bit to figure out how to translate his game to playoff hockey, but he’s still generating chances as well.

They are doing well defensively, which is also worth pointing out.

Overall, yeah it’d be nice to see M and M perform better, but we are not close to being able to label them choke artists and they have lots of time to change the narrative.
 
Y'all know who really WAS them choking artists for life in the playoffs?? NO? We got them both also with us. Marleau and thornton back in the days with the sharks. You remmeber. They always, always choked in the playoffs. Big tyme. One time they went into the finals. Joe has learned a lot. Marleau can't help anybody anymore. Joe can in some ways, talking, weight, talking, energy. Etc.

I know sire... I'm also writing this same thang in the past. Even the sharks knew joe didin't belong on the first unit anymore. They didn't play him there. We should not do so neither. Of course not sire. You already know.

The problem with Matthews and Marner is they were paid the big money before they accomplished anything.
The cap is projected to be flat for the next 5 years so if Dubas is still the GM he needs to move Marner and somehow figure out how to get out from under the Tavares nightmare or we will be screwed for the next 5 years

The one thing I've found works well is to stop having any attachment to rich kids earning millions of dollars. To me, all I care about is the team.
It's just as hard to talk about the pros and cons of fan's favorite players as it is to talk about someone's religion. Matthews and Marner are good
hockey players but not great. They're not going head to head with anyone in a serious game and making a difference. Maybe a slight positive
is all you can hope for. Matthews is a shooter. Marner is a playmaker. Take those two attributes away from them and you're talking about average
players. If Matthews' wrist is injured, it reduces them both to be about as good as Kerfoot in abilities.
