Player Discussion Arber Xhekaj: The Sheriff

Deslauriers grabbed him and dropped the gloves. Did you want Arbs to talk it out and walk away like a punk? Did you watch the game? How did that hurt the team? The boys looked pumped to me whenever he drops the mitts, its great for the team if you ask me. Should Guhle not have hit his man and decked him on the ice, because someone may have come after him too? This team will grow together knowing they have each others backs, unlike the last 25 years of 'to each their own'. I also loved how Deslauriers did his job and went after Arbs, it works both ways.
You write like I'm trying to turn hockey into a non-contact sport. I don't think you're understanding my point. I have no problem with fighting or checking. Arber is an exciting player. I'm not going to discuss it anymore, it's not a big deal. He's a rookie, he'll probably learn.

I'm hoping the frequency of these fights for WiFi go down as the season goes on. This young guy has talent and I don't want some fight related injury, and for Godsakes not a concussion interfere with him becoming the best hockey player he can become.

No issue with him fighting to step in for a teammate, but these bozos are just lining up to test him. He hasn't started the last few as I recall
And no, I don't think him skating away is the thing to do.

I think he will have fewer of these set challenges in time. And I'll be glad.

I was at a game once 3-4 seats above Price’s shoulder (round 2010-ish?)… I had never seen a goalie get bumped in his crease that much. At one point Carey skated up the left boards and literally body-checked an opposing player on zone entry… I was always convinced he’d had enough!

— found footage, got the year right lol

The Cam Janssen hit 😂 What a classic. Carey trying to move Hamrlik off a legit heavyweight lmao, what a special dude.

. Do you guys want the future to be this? No thanks. It starts at 1:05. There is a very high knowledge base of posters here. Some have played the game at a high level. We all know how many inches we grow to have guys who can play and stand up for themselves and others.

They really believe a team of smurfs will be the key to success nothing will change their mind.

Deslauriers is old school & he understands the “code”. Arber dished out a clean, hard hit and Deslauriers responded because he believes that’s his job? Players should be allowed to give & take clean hard hits without retaliation however in todays game that’s not the case.
I’ve always enjoyed hard physical play with players “policing” themselves but I hate staged fights! Jackeye is a good d-man with all kinds of potential and he doesn’t need to prove he’s tuff….other less talented players are always around who DO need to show how tuff they are & will challenge him.
Remember John Kordic he was as tuff as nails but wanted to be a hockey player and when he was allowed to work on his craft became a decent defence man.

Olivier seems like a class act

I'd take him on our team in a heartbeat. His conversation with Cole resting his head on Olivier's shoulder was priceless.

Every time I've met Price. He comes across so quiet and laid back. Seeing him lose it is hilarious.

At the same time, it's part of his identity and that's what make him essential to a NHL team

every other team's tough guy is looking for him every night... if Arbs even makes a clean hit he's a target. Would be nice if we could dump a couple of these panzies around him and have some other 'men' to help him out since Edmundson, Savard and the rest have turned into total wussies.

they weren't the problem

they were not a solution, or a difference maker.. and if I'm a rookie I want to stand out. Harris was awful tonight, couple good outlet passes, some really bad turnovers in all ends of the ice, and really ineffective with the body. We knew this team's blueline would be exposed over and over again, but I see a lot of issues coming out way after Dec when we really play good teams on more occasion. Love how Wideman fights and I hear and read 'He's really trying to make an impact out there!'. When Arbs fights I gotta read 'Cmon man pick your spots!'. Whatevs

I think you won’t see him out of the lineup again. His mere presence will reduce the after whistle nonsense. Too many Sabres were smiling as the game got out of hand.
I noticed that as well, and I thought to myself, wish the big fella was playing, there would be a lot less to laugh about.

And I know this is the Xhekaj thread but I’ll say it anyway - if MSL doesn’t like Pezzetta and won’t use him in the role he’s got to play (fourth line energy guy that drops the gloves and antagonizes the other team), then let’s get someone who will fill that role. 6 minutes a night, when he does actually draw in, doesn’t allow him to be effective.

I felt Xhekaj’s absence adversely affected the chemistry of the team last night. There was a noticeable lessening of the swagger that the team has shown over the first 15 or so games of the season. There’s no question that Buffalo ‘s top players outperformed and outproduced our top players, but there was clearly something missing in the team’s response. Do we really want Ghule, Wideman and Evans fighting? Do those fights even take place if Xhekaj is in the lineup? Maybe. And maybe not. But I saw little benefit in changing the chemistry of the team when things have generally been going better than expected for this very young team. Too often here we witness a chorus of posters demanding that players be sent down to Laval after a bad game. As if that demotion is a panacea for improving both the player(s) being demoted and the team itself. Sometimes its necessary. But sometimes it's a regressive move that both undermines the confidence of the player being demoted and the chemistry of the team. I think last night's game is an example of how a team's chemistry, which is so important for the collective development of the team's players, can be undermined, in some cases, by even the smallest of such moves.
