Anze Kopitar (MOD WARNING Post #52)

In LeBrun's articule he suggests that Kopi's been playing through something.

"Kopitar has just 13 points (6 goals, 7 assists) in 28 games, although word is he has played through some ailments that may still be affecting him."

Similar to the Mike Richards mystery virus last year? Or the sicknesses going around the NHL? Would make sense, imo. Not an excuse but an explanation.

Not injured, out of shape.

He is making mistakes that out of shape players make. It was a short off-season.

Kopitar won a cup, got married, pretty sure he probably got his own place.

It's not out of the realm of possibility he slacked off on his training.

I dunno. I think he would have played his way into shape by now if that were the case.

That always doesn't happen, look at Doughty 2011 and Richards 2013 both out of shape. Struggled all season long at various points because, both were not at peak fitness.

You can't always play your way into shape.

He could but it depends. Training in the off-season is different than in-season. One of the jobs of an S&C coach in the off-season is to establish a foundation for the grind of the season - strengthen muscles, correct imbalances, develop cardio, etc. If a guy doesn't put in the conditioning work in the off-season, for whatever reason, it can be hard to play catch-up during the season because you're just focusing energy on recovering from practice & games, let alone trying to improve your strength & conditioning. Having an injury, wife who is close to delivery, or a newborn can complicate things further by cutting into training & recovery. I haven't worked with pro hockey players (I wish), but I did work with D1 college basketball players. They play about 30 regular season games with a frequency of about twice a week. As far as most aspects of strength & conditioning go, trying to improve those athletes during the season is difficult. I can only imagine it'd be considerably harder for a pro athlete dealing with over 80 games at a frequency of about 3 games per week and that's before even considering the amount of playoff games the Kings have played, which just make off-season S&C even more difficult. If Kopitar's problem is just cardiovascular, then he could likely play his way into shape. If it's anything else, playing alone isn't going to get him in top shape.

I just hope, whatever it is, Kopitar has it worked out by the time the playoffs get here.

I'm figuring for him to do well, the physical part of the game is only one portion. If he has his head in the game, his timing down, his hands stay nimble, etc. he just needs to get in shape enough to keep up with the play. Obviously it's not the best way to compete, but on the other hand it's not like he is a track skater where if he's behind on the curve on his strength and conditioning he may as well write off the season. There's going to be some point where he's roughly where he needs to be.

I'm hoping alright?!

We're all with you on that! lol

Getting an Olympic break could help.

I think if Kopitar starts to look anything like his old self it will most likely be after the All-Star break.

Looks like he wants to stay in LA :)

Kings are not going to win very many games with Kopitar not producing. Kopitar understands this right ?

@lakingsinsider: Kopitar - concerned more with winning than personal production - confident he'll emerge from scoring slump: http://t.co/1opumEGwWk

He's always come across to me as a player who truly cares more about getting his teammates involved than his own personal #'s. Sometimes he seems so concerned with it that the team suffers overall because he neglects to develop his own goal shooting opportunities which could often be better than those of the players around him.
