Paul Bissonnette is extremely well connected with current players, from the GTA area, is a self proclaimed Leafs fan and has had Matthews on their show. He said this about him today: Keep in mind, Auston Matthews the season he's having with battling through not only the injuries but the other adversity. He was leading all the forwards in blocked shots still pumping in genos left and right...

Could be a total nothing burger but I just thought it was an interesting comment. If he's going through some off-ice stuff, playing through injuries and shooting at a career low %, he should be back to being an MVP contender next year.

Off ice stuff = premature hair loss ??
What else could it be?

He absolutely has the wealth to buy all the hair he needs:)

Depression/anxiety, family issues, non sports related medical stuff, substances - legal or otherwise. The off ice problems could be very real but I am inclined to think an injury. His TOI is is still over 20:00 but the lowest in the last 4 years. This in a season where Tavares ice time is the lowest in his tenure as a Leaf. AM is going to set a career low for shooting percentage and a career high for ES primary assists. He is doing the work and while his shot volume is down its still close to 2 years ago.

If I had to guess. maybe his back? 2 goals in his first 9 games this season but still 5 SOG a game so how are you healthy enough to take all those shots but have the weaker scoring results? He has had 8 SOG twice in the last games. There are a host of injuries that are treated with non surgical intervention allowing the player to continue the season but only delay the knife. I think we will maybe find out he needed some cleanup surgery this summer. He has had 2 of his 3 multi goal games in 2023 so maybe thats a positive for the playoffs.

That's another way of saying they are still gonna bend over Dubas in contract negotiations.

His wrist shot alone is much different. It has to be a recurrence of his last wrist injury
That simply isn’t true, he’s been firing off hard, quick release shots no problem all season. I don’t see that at all to be honest.

“I think my hand and everything has been feeling a lot better, just stronger,” Matthews said, acknowledging the nature of that injury for the first time. “So yeah, I’d have to agree with you there. Just shooting it a little bit more fluidly I’d say.”

Matthews has scored in three straight games (and also added three assists) and fired 29 shots on goal on 45 attempts in his last five outings. That’s almost six shots on nine attempts per game.

That’s more like the Matthews who led the NHL with 348 shots – 4.8 per game – on 599 (!) attempts last season.

If Matthews’ hand is finally healed to the point that he’s getting back to last years level of greatness that is massive when we’re only a few weeks from the playoffs.

Not surprising. There have been a few times this season where he is in a position that he usually scores from, but didn't.
Hopefully he is returning to form now.

We've all watched him since his rookie year, you could clearly tell his shot was nowhere near where it has been in the past seasons. There wasn't the same accuracy nor power from years past

If he really is back to normal we're in a really really good spot. You essentially add the best goal scorer in the game back into your lineup

Yeah this is going to be amazing especially when O'Reilly gets back. They have no excuse but to go all the way now, and yes I think a fully healthy Leafs team can beat Boston.
