Matthews is gonna get healthy have another monster year again very soon after this one, probably next, and a lot of people who have posted in this thread this year are going to look very stupid.

He can have a a monster year but the comparison to Mcdavid should be dead.

There is no comparison and the fans who tried to argue they are similar tier players based off of one season from matthews were crazy

Clearly the higher thinkers hang out on podcasts, how do we get these truth tellers on TSN or SNET?

Matthews comparables:

Matthews 62 points
Hyman 72 points

If he plays well, Matthews should make Zachary Hyman money next contract

One year is your baseline for a players long term contract? So six season each one progressively better bookended by one season that by any other players standards is a great year, where he is scoring at the exact same pace as Hyman and now he's = to Hyman on his next contract? Did we forget about Matthew's Ted Lindsay Award, Rocket Richard Award, Hart Awards less than a calendar year ago? I sure hope you were being facetious.

Why do we have to argue over who is best? They are both world class hockey players.

McDavid is clearly the best offensive player in the world, he's a train wreck defensivly and a liability without the puck but when he's scoring 2 points a game, who really gives a F? He' a +9 and has scored 124 points, think about that. Generally he's been pretty crappy on the face off dot but is getting better. He's a one dimensional elite generational talent. He scores that's it and when you score at the pace he scores that is pretty damn good.

Matthews is an elite sniper who plays a really solid two way game, OK-ish on the faceoffs. He plays well with and without the puck. Matty has scored 63 points and is a +21. As much as Oiler fans wont like this Matthews is a more complete center than McDavid in all aspects of the game but one, offence.

Has been.

For short bursts.

And then gets injured.

He doesn’t have an elite shot currently

And he seemingly can’t carry the puck either. Nylander can shoot the puck and carry it

Matty is on an 82 game pace to score 42 goals (29/57*82) , Willie is on an 82 game pace to score ...42 goals (33/64*82) ... what's the problem?

The hate on for Matthews is stronger than ever. I think the haters are genuinely scared he’s going to go off in the playoffs this year more than ever before.

After all the posts, dumping on Tavares, Marner and Nylander over the last few years… never thought it would be Auston’s turn next.

that doesn’t really make sense though, him being bad this year has no relevance on him being good again next year

As for the people saying deal him, I’d rather not discuss then until after the playoffs and contract negotiations have begun. A lot of speculation being made, including myself, which have no basis. It’s just garbage talk.

Matthews playing good next year is what everyone wants, I doubt anyone is actively happy that he’s play has been underwhelming this year

Hopefully he turns it up in the playoffs

I do have a couple of doubts about your argument.

Firstly Matthews plays in a system which shelters defensive stats, we have a better system than Edmonton. Moreover, we don’t rely on Matthews to do all of our offence as evident from this year. If Mcdavid has a 91 point pace then either league scoring has dropped to worse than the dead puck era, or Edmonton is headed for the 1st overall pick. Edmonton’s system relies on their big 2 mainly, but big 3 this year to our score their opposition, and for the rest of the team to break even. That doesn’t help because if Mcdavid starts playing defence at an elite rate, his team will lose 3-2 or 2-1.

Secondly, they have trash tier goaltending. Jack Campbell is making mcdavids stats look much worse. From the games I catch, he looks like freddy from the Covid division. You put a body or two infront of him and he is not stopped the shot. He routinely lets in some back breaking goals. He’s what Samsonov at his absolute worse looks like. Skinner has looked good but it’s his first year and they just switched him into the 1A role.

Moreover, when you compare elite players, offence is usually what gets brought up, unless is special cases like Bergeron. Bottom six players are where you bring other elements like PK and defending responsibly because you need them not to make the stars be asked to do more than they can in the ozone. Being able to produce is what makes you a star. Matthews has not shown that this year, at least compared to Mcdavid.
