Speculation: Any interest in Liljegren for a mid round pick?

Well, it would be Edmonton or Colorado's 3rd (we don't have our own).
oh, I wonder if a conditional trade works, say he plays less than 50 games its a 4th, 51-75 1 of the 3rds and if he plays 75-82 its a 2nd?
The way I see it is, if he is playing well enough to play 75+ games then even a 2nd round pick would feel like steal for you guys

Absolutely not, nice try.

You opened with "mid-round pick", you aren't getting 33rd overall.
I agree but on a performance based conditional trade a 2nd seems a fair price for the max payout if he goes and lights it up

Or how about the later of the 2 3rds or a 4th but SJ gives us 1st dibs on Granlund@50% at the deadline?

That isn't a performance-based condition, that's a health-based condition. If he's healthy, he'd obviously play every game.

We can't retain on Granlund, so some other team would have to be retaining.

If I were Grier I'd be happy to make some kind of future considerations based on if you match another team's best offer, we'd choose you or whatever.

Feels like a team like the Sharks would be all over it. Take the cap hit and get him for basically free.
Why?

He’s UFA in two years so let’s hold our horses on tanky teams trading away picks to acquire a so so player available for “free” in two years.

While it wouldn't surprise me if Liljegren got traded at some point since he doesn't seem to be working in Toronto, it certainly won't be this early nor for a 4th or 5th. If anything, it'll be part of a bigger deal for an upgrade.

Still young, right handed, hundreds of NHL games showing he is a capable bottom pairing dman but is blocked from developing further.

I don't see that being likely. Our defense is pretty stuffed as is and really solid. I doubt Lilly helps return a good enough player to actually upgrade the defense.

I don't know the return but it's delusional to think there aren't teams that would take a chance on him.

A 25 year-old RD with a few years of NHL experience and 2 years on his deal @ 3M? That's a low risk gamble with potentially a decent (but modest) upside for a GM that needs help on the (right side) blueline.
$3m is a lot for an#6-7 D

Craig Berube on Timothy Liljegren’s camp showing: “Has to do things quicker, be a little heavier in his battles, move pucks quicker, and simplify the game”

Doesn’t sound like a vote of confidence. At 25 and a half years old he probably is pretty much what he is. Ideally he’s on your bottom pair.

Ya I can't imagine we would have signed Barrie if we could have gotten him for a 4th

Cap is meaningless to Calgary

Barrie is a much better player at 1/3 the cost.

I bet the Leafs would take him for Lil right now.

Barrie was available to the whole league for free last week.

So yes, Lil is a cap dump with negative value.

I'm sure there'd definitely be interest at that price.

Liljegren's contract makes him a little bit of an awkward fit for a deep blueline playoff team...but there are plenty of teams out there who could afford to spend $3M cap (and less cash) on a guy who, on a weaker/less deep blueline, is probably more of a #4/5 tweener RHD and still reasonable young.

He's in that same grey area as Henri Jokiharju imo. Where you really don't want him in your Top-4, but for short stints, he's probably a better option than a lot of other #5/6D. But also doesn't really do anything particularly well...where most playoff teams tend to prefer more of a "defensive specialist PKer" type in those #5/6 roles. And $3M is a lot for a playoff team's #5/6D.

Plenty of teams out there lacking some depth at RHD who could afford to give him a try, where the cap number shouldn't be a a major factor.

There could be some interest in Lilegren, if he was making $1m a season.

But that $3m salary is ugly, and has another year to run. So unless the Leafs are willing to take back some salary, he's basically 'immoveable'.

This entire subject shows how bad it’s been in Toronto for so long, when we have fans just penciling in Dmen who have their own substantial issues, as automatic Top 4 players.

OEL needed massive protection in Florida last year. Yet the Leafs are penciling him into a role he just couldn’t play anymore in Vancouver. I’ve been as tough on Liljegren as anyone, but Benoit and Hakanpaa?? Really guys?

They’ve spent years developing Liljegren now. Why on earth would they not start enjoying all that hard work starting to show itself? He took major steps last year, yet there’s people who wanna run him out of town over his $3 million contract.

There’s not but a couple of Dmen on the roster who can transport the puck right now. Getting rid of one isn’t the smartest thing in the world.

Look, if he is having a bad season by December even, then do whatever they have to, and replace his minutes. Let’s wait for that to happen first, before we run him out of town for players who have much more to prove.

Heinola has positive value and actually has a lot to prove if he could not be injured for once, Liljegren is a known commodity that is being paid way too much. Stanley tops out at a 3rd pairing D-man, but at least he's paid like it. It's about as fair of a swap as you'd find.
Liljegren certainly doesn't have negative value and has "something to prove" as well.

At $3M a pop, does he make any non-Playoff teams a Playoff team or give a significant marginal boost.. particularly to the extent that you want to jump the line and bring him in now with a year head start (starting next year) to give him a UFA contract versus just waiting around to sign him (or a player of his caliber) as a UFA in a couple years?
