Anson Carter unveils Alpharetta Sports and Entertainment looking to bring expansion team to Atlanta

NHL's MO seems to be pair a "traditional" market with a "non-traditional" market for expansion. Vegas was "Non", Seattle is "traditional". Atlanta would be "Non", Salt Lake City would be "traditional". Those are my next two guesses at teams 33 & 34.

fine with atlanta as a market, but it should be a relocation - which can come with a relocation fee for all i care, since that's all the BoG cares about

34+ teams is just wacky

Except Houston potential owner not wanting to pay an expansion fee

Moving Yotes to Houston and expansion in SLC and Atlanta makes more sense
They still charge relocation fees but I agree, this should be the easy out for the NHL.

Houston "Gets off easy" by getting a relocation rather than an expansion, and the fee is low because Houston is essentially bailing the league out from the Coyotes' disaster.

I’m split.

I’d like Atlanta to get a team, but the west is too damned sparse…..the argument can be made to move the Coyotes to Utah and add Houston, but football is king in Texas. If the NHL doesn’t like using a college hockey rink, they’ll be even less thrilled when they start fighting with high school football broadcasts for viewership after the shine of a new team wears off.

Other than SLC, I can’t think of another western city with pull that wouldn’t wind up over-encroaching on another franchise’s market.

Just what we need more expansion. Lets not fix the other 1000 things wrong in the game right now, lets add another unneeded team to this f***ing bowl of fruits and nuts.
Make sure to add solutions to "the other 1000 things wrong in the game right now" here:

Expansion has been the NHL’s best product and I have very little concerns about the league’s ability to set up a new franchise for success.

If they effectively add another Vegas-like or Seattle-like franchise—then it will be a huge positive for Atlanta, the league, and the players. It will grow the game and everyone will be better for it.

just relocate the coyotes there and award an expansion team to houston

makes a lot more sense
Then there will be 33 teams and everything will be unbalanced, and that will water down the product, and ... whatever other excuses are getting applied here.

Which, coincidentally, are a lot like the same excuses used in 1990 to argue why the NHL shouldn't expand from 21 to 22 teams.

Say what????

I actually found this quite interesting....

This is off topic, but I think I'm most impressed with the Yotes bringing in $120 mil in a 5,000-seat arena! Edmonton being tops is great as well.

I am not 100% sure on the wording of this.....but it seems like that includes revenue sharing.

*Revenues and operating income are for the 2022-23 season, including postseason and applicable non-NHL arena revenue (excluding the Seattle Kraken expansion fee) and are net of revenue sharing and arena debt service. All figures are in U.S. dollars based on the average exchange rate during 2022-23 season.

That said, IF they get another team in Atlana (my attempt to steer back on topic), hopefully they can make a better go of it. As last time they had multiple factors going against them. That said, in 2010, Atlanta was 29/30....and guess who was 30/30....and still kicking....at 32/32.

I'm not sure how this battle of the two ownership groups will play out. I've known of Carter's attempt at getting a team for a few years, but it seems like the South Forsyth group is wayyy ahead of the process with the arena setup, county approval, etc.

I'll be going to the Public Participation Meeting to meet Krause and that ownership group next week and ask questions.

I'm split on this one, I like that the league is growing but the NHL already has a goalie crisis and adding another team is going to make that worse.
NHL doesn’t have a goalie crisis. More than enough talent for expansion
