I’ll put it this way. Right now they are behind the point they were at at this time in 2017-2018 (That team had 47 points on this date vs 46 this year) and that team barely made the playoffs. Of course that team went into th tank right after that, but this team is already playing at that 2nd half level.

This is incredible, they literally tied an NHL record for reaching some number of points (or wins?) in the least amount of games, and it was like 25 games into the season. It's impossible to overstate how utterly ridiculous this season has been.

And it wasn't like you could point to shooting percentages or save percentages that would come back down to earth, the advanced stats said we were the best team in the league, and now this. Why? Why couldn't we just suck like every other year and get a franchise player at the end of it?

Like, we have to be approaching the most abrupt collapse in league history, in terms of shift in point percentage or something.

That would be amazing. It's hard to see where that happens with everyone shooting like shit. A third of our defense out long term, and tank commander Blackwood back

I mean, the shooting is going to ebb and flow. We are in a rough patch right now, had a good stretch for a while, started out cold, etc. Coming into the game we were right on league average for shooting percentage at 5 on 5 (we are a tick below on the PP).

The defense is another story, not sure how that will play out.

everyone will be happy if they beat pittsburgh. fans don’t want to be pissy and unhappy with their team were desperate for any kind of win
Some posters here definitely prefer being told they were "right" during bad times than winning. This stretch has made that very clear.

They dropped .200 in point percentage this month and the month isn't over.

Explain to me how you can assess losing a shit ton of really close, one goal games to the top teams in the league is “falling apart”?

It’s gonna be a lot tougher to maintain a playoff spot than we maybe thought a month ago, I will grant you that. But this is not last year’s team and they aren’t a bad team. Worst I could see them finishing is 9th, which would really really really f***ing suck given the streak and how pumped it made us all. But that still wouldn’t make them a crappy team that’s the same as last year. It would make them a bubble team which is actually still progress, as much as it would hurt to find out in this way.
Which, by the way, most people here would've been happy with at the start of the season.

Literally .500 hockey would have been fine this month. They couldn't even come close to that.
.500 hockey for the rest of the season would likely have still scraped a playoff spot out. This stretch in December has been a massive dumpster fire though and has erased our buffer.

Boston is the best team in the league and didn’t have McAvoy or Marchand for a month plus

Washington hasn’t had Backstrom or Wilson all season and are right in the race lol

Avs have been decimated by injuries and are still in the playoffs
That's the other thing that worries me. Aside from Palat the Devils really haven't had any costly injuries yet, and don't give me Bastian. If we're that fragile a fourth liner is a major injury then we really aren't that good. I'm not sure that kind of good fortune will keep up the rest of the year.

I get that it's annoying to wait for them to work out of this funk but they're still in a decent spot with games in hands on teams, the issue is that this division is ruthless from 1-6. If we won tonight, we would've been closer to Carolina than we are the Islanders. And like someone said, if the division keeps winning at this pace then yeah clearly it's not meant to be if they keep shooting they way they are. Caps are on a heater, Rangers are a decent roll, Isles have found their game, etc. It's up to the Devils to find theirs from now to the end of the January on a similar run.

I may take a sabbatical from this place, willingly this time. Not just because the doomsday prediction posts are so downright cringe and insufferable and I think I need to step away from that bullshit, but also because the losing coincided closely with my return. I think I need to do it for myself and the good of the team.
