When Andersen played in Anaheim did they not have a better defensive system?

Although just like we saw in 2019 when Toronto blew that 3-2 series lead against Boston in the Playoffs, in the 2015 Western Conference Finals when Andersen was the Ducks #1 Goalie they blew a 3-2 series lead against Chicago.
That's true. Who knows if its a team or player issue. All I know is this is his last shot with Toronto. If he doesn't like the script being written for him, go out and do something about it.

Toronto needs to make the 2nd round or even the Conference Finals to even consider re-signing Andersen.

Would also depend on if and how the Leafs get eliminated. If it's from some kind of mental implosion in an elimination game or coughing up a big lead, Andersen can't come back from that.

If Toronto has a 3-1 series lead in the 2nd round and they end up losing in a Game 7 with Andersen, I agree that would be a situation where he can not come back from something like that.

Now if it's the opposite where they come back from a 3-1 series deficit and still lose in a Game 7 with Andersen that could be different like they did in 2018.

However they can not blow a 4-3 lead going into the 3rd period and lose 7-4, because that actually happened in 2018 against Boston when Andersen was in net.

I like Anderson hope we do it this year with him. He has been asked to shoulder early on for a young rebuilding Leafs team and one in which the defence was never good enough up until this season (at least we assume).

I expect him to play very well behind this group.

Good goalie, not a great one.

The good news is that most cups are won by just "good" goalies.

Don’t over think it. Andersen has NEVER delivered when it’s mattered most. He’s never outplayed the other goalie in a playoff series, and has let in multiple backbreaking softies.

He’s also on the wrong side of 30. This should be his last crack at the can with the leafs, then we thank him for his services and part ways.

Losers lose ... da narrative rarely changes ... but as a Leaf fan we all have hopes ... I think he is a good goalie too but not a $$$ goalie when it counts ... either way even if he has a decent year again and he takes us to league semis to play for Cup then I would never give him more than 2-3 years and at CAP $$$ so we can resign Zach and Rielly ... if he can't help us get past North division then let him go ... to me I would try to get our 1st rounder back from him at TDL if there is one this year ... but i suspect they already tried and there were no takers

I really hope he doesn't start off slow. It will be a path for Campbell to play ahead, and a path to career suicide.

I don't think they can even afford to resign him. I've always though he's an above average starter but can't make up for a weak defence.

I also remember when this team used to trout out reimer as a starting goalie so i appreciate what freddy brings..he stabilized the position.

Prior to Game 1 of the qualifying series against Columbus the last meaningful game Andersen played was on March 10, 2020 against Tampa Bay. So he had extended rest during that time and it didn't matter in the bubble. So is that going to make a difference whenever the 2020-21 season starts?

Actually he was very good in the bubble, just not as good as his opponents, as always.
He was .936, you take that any day.

That's foolish. He's far ahead of Campbell and Dell at this point. Killed us every playoff round? Sure, when he's let in an average of 1.5 goals in deciding games... maybe we should look at the whole team.... if you can't even score over a goal a game, with the dollars we have spent on "elite" forwards... maybe you shouldn't blame just the goalie. Noting, he's been part of the problem, but to blame him solely is ridiculous... the whole team hasn't been close to good enough.

How about fixing a part, that you can.

We are probably better off getting a tandem to roll with Campbell. Like a Korpisalo for a couple of years.

I see something like this as the likely ourcome.a cost controlled 1 A/B tanden could ease Leafs headaches elsewhere in the lineup.

Really hope Campbell steals the show this season. And that's not a slight against Anderson, I just think it would better for the team

Yeah, for me we have 4 years of Andersen history and I don't know if he's got the mental makeup to be a money goalie. The Vancouver game last winter where he outdueled Markstrom in a very tight contest, before Toronto blew it wide open in the 3rd en route to a 4-1 win is the kind of game we need to see out of him. But the fact that it stands out so clearly in my mind just makes me think we won't get this in a Game 6 close out or a Game 7. Leafs need to be so good we are closing teams out early but if we're in an elimination situation, it's goodnight Leafs.

It's funny how much fans have turned on Leaf goalies over the years when this team hasn't played good defensively since Pat Burns was the coach.

He’s no Patrick Roy but I think a lot of these post are way off the mark. Call me what you will but most nights he’s the best player on the team and the Leafs rely on him WAY too often.

The D coverage in front of him has been atrocious for his whole tenure here and he has stabilized the position at the very least.
