Impressively bad piece of GMing from the Ducks here. Where is the upside?
I kind of get it from Anaheim's perspective. Young team that's having a decent season so why not bring in a vet with all that cap space to help a yougn group.

The issue is that it's a clearly bad contract and they completely let a team that was badly trying to dump this guy off the hook for....reasons.
This reminds me of what Holland did with the Keith trade actually giving the Hawks assets to take their bad contract, perplexing.

I have to question whether your opinion is impartial....

I don't think you can say this trade is "horrible" for Anahiem. He has one year left on his deal.

You are also ignoring the fact that they can hold onto him until the trade deadline and then move him again and recoup even more assets - either this year or next. They have the space to retain cap as well.

Trouba @ 50% retained, which they would easily be able to do, would net more positive assets for sure.

It's a horrible trade for the Devils, that I'm sure of

Trouba is a bad player and criminally overpaid. The Ducks should have forced the Rangers to pay to take him or retain. The poster is right, it's just bad value, pretty simple.

I imagine that's what the other teams who had 'interest' in him were trying to do, get something back with him and/or get him with retention for taking the gamble.

Anaheim did NYR a huge favor. Whether or not it works out for them is another question, but they should've been paid to take him on.

NHL gms never fail to amaze... how a team could take Trouba and his entire 8m cap hit for this season and next without an asset attached is crazy.

Anaheim has cap space to spare, sure. But that doesn't mean you don't squeeze NY here who is very clearly in a tough spot with their cap. How did no one take advantage of NY and their situation is beyond me.
How exactly is Anaheim supposed to "squeeze" NY when there were reportedly offers from Columbus, Detroit and Ottawa on the table?

Trouba at 8M for 1.5 seasons is a positive value asset. Big 30yo right shot D who can play 20+ minutes and hit like Trouba don't grow on trees.

Trouba's wife is still in medical school?

What the hell is she studying, how to raise the dead?
These young physicians are completely exploited for years of essentially low cost labor while working as residents or fellows and have zero control over where they end up geographically after matching to an institution. The whole system is totally broken and wrong.

Then they are turned loose with no financial literacy, zero negotiating skills, mountains of debt, and occasionally, a high salary, but not really given the amount they've sacrificed.

It's pretty absurd. Again, my wife just went through this and we finally got through it.

Trouba's wife at least has a spouse making $8m a year. She's going to be just fine.

One of the biggest "get out of jail free" cards I've ever seen. God damn, have to wonder what Columbus was offering if that was Drury's first choice.

As a Canucks fan, not happy about seeing that head-hunting POS in our division

Because those teams almost certainly wanted an asset and/or retention attached to him.

The other thread got locked, but I'll repeat what I said there....

Trouba has to be furious, right? Wife is still a Dr in NY and that was one of the key reasons for the original move to NY? And they just had a baby earlier this year?

WAAAAAAAAAAAAH MY WIFE'S A DOCTOR IN NY AND I'M A MULTI-MILLIONAIRE, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH

I think lots of teams would be interested if his salary was 4M. At 8M he should've been a negative asset.

He's a unicorn though, 1 of 1 in todays league.

And I'm not surprised teams like Columbus/Anaheim were bidding for him given his leadership + experience.

I don't know the waiver order but New York would've just waived him if he was a negative asset & he would've been picked up quickly.

I like this trade for all parties involved, but especially Anaheim and Trouba. He still has game, and a change of scenery with no pressure should benefit him greatly. Plus, it gives the Ducks 2 of the most feared hitters in the league and bolsters their right side.

Nice trade.
