For a team that for the last several years has given up shots against per 60 at near historical clips, not sure adding one of the worst players in the league at that to pair with another(Fowler) is going to help this team at all. I also don't like the idea that the players the Ducks are supposed to be developing are going to be riding the presser or sent down in favor of another vet that's best days(?) are long behind them. We'll see I guess but for now I hope Dostal and Gibson wear extra padding.

Now that I am feeling a little less knee-jerk about this...
Nope. Still hate it. Flying elbow merchant. Can't cheer for him. Also bad at defense and presumably unscratchable, which is just what this team needs. Wouldn't have been happy giving up a seventh.

I don't like the Gudas comparison people have made because I feel like Gudas gets at least as much attention for clean hits. Trouba seemingly is only known for the dirty ones, and his hits/60 this season are barely higher than noted 'guy who never hits' Brett Leason. (Better in previous years, sure, but if this were the Trouba of previous years one presumes he'd still be a Ranger). His kind of toughness isn't the kind I want the team learning from, and I really don't care how beloved he might be in the locker room. Nearly every fourth liner in the league is "beloved in the locker room," it's not a good primary qualification.
(For the record, my reaction to the Gudas speculation and signing was "don't love that but I guess I can live with it," I'm not just softening my view on Gudas because he's already been here two years. Though he HAS grown on me. I've just never perceived him and Trouba as being on the same tier of yuck. Perhaps that was a flaw in my original perception of Gudas but that's where I'm coming from.)

Everyone keeps talking about how what this team needs is a genuine star to teach the kids how to be stars, but instead we get a guy who's so washed his team used waiver threats to force him out while he was wearing the C? Even without the elbows I don't think I'd be excited.

Losing Vaaks also does, in fact, suck. It was probably inevitable but it can still suck, he's a good player. Hopefully he's gonna get a better shot with the Rangers.

lol sounds like he's ready to pen another Killorn tier albatross contract for him, probably why he chose this team since it sounds like he prioritizes long term stability over everything else for his wifes profession.

Calling this a bad trade for Anaheim is pretty insane. The cap hit essentially doesn't matter given how much space the Ducks have, so it comes down to a meh pick and depth d-man for a proven veteran who knows what it's like to play some tough, heavy minutes. Trouba may not be in his prime but I would be shocked if he doesn't fit in with the Ducks. There is no reason at all to have a problem with this trade, Ducks fans should be happy.

That depth d-man put up way more respectable numbers last year than Trouba though, Verbeek essentially tossed NY a lifeline for no real reason despite holding the majority of the cards and I'd argue the Ducks may have gotten worse by addition especially if comes at the cost of benching a developing prospect so Cronin can cobble together a Fowler - Trouba line and say "I don't know" when they give up 60 shots.

Where else was he going to prove it? And yes, we shall see. This is a discussion board however, and it is a reasonable take that a guy who is bad defensively will not improve the team.

Reality of pro sports is overwhelming majority of players are not turning it aruond.

Typical soft Verbeek trade.
I'll sound like a retread, but we really, really struggle defensively down low and in the crease. Our dmen are young and/or undersized for that kind of battle, the kind trouba should excel at.

If deployed the right way, I think trouba can be used in a way that maximizes his strengths as a physical guy who can move the puck some.

I don't expect him to be some savior, I just expect us to be physically tougher to play against, which is important and something we sorely lack.
