These games have been complete trash

For my money, the lack of prep for this tourney accentuates the importance of skill.

Honestly, I've watched ~10 games, and the three I enjoyed most were all of Slovakia's round robin games. I never seen the Czech-Russia game though.

Canada has had the cupcakeiest of cupcake schedules. US has Sweden and Russia, and even the Czech republic is way better than anyone Canada has played.
Yeah, the US group is much deeper. That will be a big advantage for the US in the preliminary round if they can get a top 2 seed and face off against the #3 or #4 in Canada’s group.

Germany didn’t even have a complete team

but still it’s Time to cut this tournament down

Austria/Czechs/slovaks/suiss/Germany could have been a Worlds team

Canada US Finland Sweden Russia and a Worlds team would have been tv worthy. This week of hockey has been embarrassing. No one wants to see squash matches.

I just said it in another thread, there are too many teams. There are five countries that can ice medal-contending teams with consistency and the rest, save the occasional miracle run, are generally just flotsam and jetsam that get destroyed by the big guys.

It’s been unwatchable thus far. The Russia US game was the only actual legit hockey game worthy of television this week. Garbage.

Six team round robin, top four move on.

I like the idea of teams from Division 1 working their way up, but in practice it accomplishes nothing. Just batting practice for the dominant countries.

Russia-Czechs was good too. Sweden-Russia, US-Sweden and Canada-Finland should be good matchups. And then there’s the medal round. It was always going to be a weak opening.

The games haven’t been great. But I’m just thankful I can post up on a workday and watch hockey on TV without having to worry about someone at the office spotting me.

And I am a huge advocate of working from the office.

I like this idea. Maybe have the last team in elite group play the winner of the division 1. More often than not the 6th team would be the Czech Republic but once in a while Slovaks, Swiss or German could prevail.

Like I said on draft night. I would sleep better knowing a guy like Schneider was patrolling my blueline

I think the Rangers definitely went in with that mindset as well.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the skill of ADA, Fox and Lundkvist. But there is virtually zero chance the Rangers would ever have a blue line with all three on the right side. And honestly, from what I’ve heard, I don’t think the odds are much better of having two of them on the right with one shifting over to the left.

Moreover, I don’t think anyone is calling Byfield a bust. Prior to actually picking Lafreniere there were at least a dozen conversations on this forum about whether we should take Byfield instead because he’s a center and SIZE. Byfield will no doubt be a good player, but I think it’s fairly evident that Lafreniere was well ahead of the pack in the draft last year and even his 10 month age gap doesn’t account for the size of the gap.

If we’re looking for comparable, Lafreniere sizes up well with MacKinnon at the same age. The key difference being Mac was one of the youngest in his draft class and Laf being one of the oldest.

But if we adjust for the calendar and compare Laf’s D-1 and D-2 season to Mac’s D and D-1 season, they are remarkably close - with Laf being a few weeks younger at the same check points.

That should have always been the standard for comparison, not Byfield.

Now, having said that, Byfield has a chance to be a very unique player at the NHL level and that’s the draw there. Realistically, the debate for most scouts and close observers should be who was the better prospect to take second. That one has some merit.

But Byfield was not even the consensus second pick in the draft, to say nothing about challenging for the top spot. Laf was clearly the top prize.

Lafreniere is going to play for the Rangers this year and there's never really been any doubt. I can see Byfield playing some games for the Kings as well but that's mostly because if he doesn't play for the Kings he might not have any team to play for with the OHL season possibly not even getting off the ground.
