Today was the 6'th day in a row of zero new cases in New Brunswick, and the province is slowly opening up again. March 19 was when a state of emergency was declared, only essential businesses stayed open, social distancing, all that stuff. And really, people and the government did a good job.

Details of the proposed phases here if anyone wants a read:

Makes sense to open up businesses...I'd keep the borders closed tho'

Well, it's 25% rent from the business, 25% from landlord, 50% between the province and the federal government. Which I think is a well thought out deal.

I didn't understand it that way. If that's the deal it makes more sense. That way everyone is throwing in something so, it keeps everyone more accountable.

There are a shit load of businesses that I can't see doing well in the short term. Mostly in the service industry. Especially in the hospitality industry, it's going to rough.

Hell baby
I remember in 2012 when people called Gary Johnson unqualified for not knowing what Aleppo was. You think the guy that questions if injecting yourself with Clorox is a perhaps a great idea knows what Aleppo is? Idk what happened in the 4 years between those elections but something did. Standards shifted.

I honestly think this guy is a 70 year old 8th grader. It’s wild.

Lysol had to put out a statement today. We live in BANANALAND

What is Aleppo? Was actually in 2016:

Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson: 'What is Aleppo?'

This pandemic is the best test we will have had in our history to see/prove if social distancing, masks, and lockdowns actually do anything. CDC has said, even in regards to the flu, they really don't have any idea what works and to what extent. I think the reality really needs to set in for people that no we're not sitting at home until cases are zero. No we are not sitting at home until it's "safe". That is not happening. And for people wanting to hold out for a vaccine, that unreality also needs to set in. A huge portion of people are going to be exposed to this and it is unavoidable. Staying locked down beyond the time we need to "flatten the curve" and bolster the healthcare system to a place it needs to be will start to do more harm than good and basically is delaying the inevitable. A measured and best medically prepared approach to herd immunity with a balanced take towards economic and societal impact is the best option we have.

Also remember, no one can infect you without your "consent". Stop saying all these people outside are going to kill you. They aren't. It's illogical. If you are quarantined you shouldn't give two shits about what anyone else is doing. In fact encourage them. They can all get it and then herd immunity dictates you can come out of your lairs and be fine.

I think to a large degree that the rent subsidy will be offset by less use of the interest free loan, because many small businesses just can't go into more debt. I own a bathroom renovation business, we won't qualify for the rent subsidy as we remained running, albeit in a much smaller scale. But the other businesses in the building, pet grooming, hair salon, tattoo parlour, ceramics, kids special ed - all were shut down completely. I can see them taking advantage of the rent subsidy because they were very viable and should come back. But recovering 3-4 months of past rent when no services were being provided, that's too much to come back from when your transactions are service based. So the rent subsidy probably saves them, while the loan program probably would not have.

I can't help but feel that while we have figured out a lot of things about how to manage the general population of people healthy enough to live in their own homes, we haven't adequately figured out how to protect those at home who are very susceptible to Covid, and in particular how to protect those in seniors and special care homes. A large number of us will be infected with no ill effects, and perhaps we already have been and didn't know it. But when this thing gets into a seniors home and kills a third of the residents, well that is something we need to do much better on. And since the workers at those facilities are also out in the "herd", their bringing it into the homes becomes the issue we need to grapple with until that vaccine does come along.

I also forgot to mention, it's only for those paying less than $50k per month,.

People in general know better. Those with common sense are also safe. But I agree with the more gullible.
