Olympics: All-Star Team & Tournament Awards | MVP: Selänne

Doughty was a ton better than Karlsson in this tournament but oh well. Boy was he bad today, but I guess when you pile up the points against the basement clubs you get the respect from the IIHF.

There's always been a bias against Canada in these, too. Not sure that it could be argued otherwise.

Why bother with those types... Kessel is the cause of all the US woes and that's all they understand. No one else gets any blame, just Kessel.

What about the great Pavelski? You know, the guy who was receiving the credit for the success of the Kessel line but somehow completely escapes unscathed without any of the blame when things don't go so well? What about all of the fans pointing to Kane as their saviour and proclaiming that Kessel wasn't even the best forward on his team? Where'd he go?

People here are getting all worked up about Selänne being MVP, but people think it is fine that Kessel is named best forward? The guy was unnoticeable in the two games that really mattered :help:

Leads tournament in points, not on the ice for a single goal against in the entire tournament, scores the goal to send Sweden to the GMG, still gets no respect.

Him and Lundqvist carried a depleted Sweden team to the finals.

I would like to see an NHL salary comparison between those who dressed in the GMG.

Listening to just about any interview with a Finnish player and Selanne comes up. He might not have been the best player on the ice, but he was hugely important off the ice as well. If that had any effect on the voting, it's easy to see why he was the tournament MVP. He had one of the biggest impacts on his team during this tournament.

So no other player had an effect on his team off the ice?

Yeah right.

It was a sentimental pick, nothing more.

So you have to play on a good team to even get the chance to be the most valuable player?

How valuable can you be if your team isn't good? But, I don't agree that you need to be in the gold medal game for the award.

I know, all this talk about Kessel and Kane blows TWO penalty shots and escapes any kind of blame.

Rask was really bad early on and didn't play in the Sweden game, so I don't think he would have been a deserving candidate.

His defense let him down on that Austria game but since that he was by far the goalie in the tournament. Yes Price was good but Rask stood on his head and faced lots of more quality chances than Price.

Couldn't have gone wrong with neither of those 2 but Lundqvist is not the right choice.

He was easily one of the worst players on the ice in the GMG though, that should count for something, no?

Give me a break...he made one giveaway while trying to create offense in a 3-0 game...he also had 2 scoring chances, more like than any other Swed had...he couldn't do it all himself against team Canada's defense.

At least he was on the ice...unlike you know who...

Exactly, u guys had an awesome team! Your individuals didn't pop up that much and that's why the All-Stars team isn't all Red.

Well, thank you for the reasonable response first of all.

But, IMHO: dominant player on a dominant team > good player on OK team

Its not like NO ONE stood out on Canada. Yes, everyone contributed but Price and Weber were clearly two of the cornerstones and, considering they were probably the two top contributors to the best defensive performance ever... Well, I dunno, IMHO, that spells all-star.

Price and Bobrovsky were the best goalies in this tournament. Neither played anything less than excellent in every single game they featured in.

Lundqvist had a pair of soft games and Rask let in 4 against Austria of all teams (who were destroyed by Slovenia).

Most consistent goalie throughout tournament Lundqvist and Price
Henrik gets nod as he had to be more relied on by his team yo win games.....Price receives second place only because he wasnt tested as much ...not to say he couldn't

Intrestingly Lindquist price Luongo played the angles on the big ice the best

As good and dominate as Rask and Quick were.....there were many times they had poor angles that either cost them or escaped damage inspite of those lapses....other times they we ree brilliant

Canada walks out of this men's tournament with the highest prize: gold. To me personally that's the most important thing. You could argue some of these choices, but in the end it doesn't matter. As a nation we should be happy our TEAM walked out with the gold.

Happy for Selanne getting MVP. A nice cap off to an amazing career both in the NHL and internationally. Was he the best in the tournament? No, not really, but who in their right mind can really complain, particularly Canadians? :shakehead

Canada had a great team tournament. A few players stood out for me such as Doughty, Price, weber, carter and Benn but I have no issues with Selanne being picked as the MVP. he had a great tourny and really helped bolster and motivate his team. We got gold which all that really matters ... the individual awards are just a media thing

Nope. He disappeared when the game counted the most. The "Kessel Rule" is very clear about this. Sorry.

LOL Selanne was not the MVP of this tournament. Think maybe they just didn't want to give it to a North American in Russia. I mean Kessel won top forward but Selanne gets MVP over him..

And Doughty and Price were more worthy candidates too.

We give out best player and mvp in the nhl and write often is different players. Different voters and mvp isn't necessarily best player.

Finland lost all 4 centers and looked like they wouldn't medal and their captain led them to a medal over a gold medal favorite.

Came in here expecting the usual suspects to be crying foul that the best defenseman in the tournament was voted the best defenseman in the tournament: was not disappointed.

Congrats to Selanne, good sendoff for him, but I don't think anyone truly believes he was the MVP.

You Canadiens are funny guys. First you think Stamkos and Tavares cancel out Swedens injuries without taking the fact that you have ten times more registrated hockey players , and therefore have 10times more quality players (or should have) to replace them with. So there is a huge difference between the losses for each team.. I question if Canada is so great at hockey.. The situation is similar to USA and olympics which i do not find so impressive since they have 315 000 000 to pick from. chances are good that they get more medals than south korea then.

Then you start Whining at Karlsson becuase he didnt perform on an injured team against Canadas stacked all star team.. Ask yourself. Do you think pietrangelo would have raised to the occation and carried Sweden to a gold medal today?
