What would Carolina give for Darcy Kuemper?
You beat me to the punch! I came here lurking to ask the same question. :)

I get the feeling that the price would be more than the Canes would want to pay.

If the cost was more than NYR's 2nd I'd prefer the Canes either stick with Mrazek/Reimer or look at Lehner, Markstrom, Holtby, or Fleury.

Kuemper and either Goligoski or Demers (your choice) for 13th overall, Gardiner (dump) and either Reimer or Mrazek (your choice) as an additional dump.

Also willing to retain 50% on either Goligoski or Demers.

I mean if you’re gonna swing might as well swing for the fences.

Hell no to any thing that involves the first rounder.

Yeah I figured you two were eyeing the 13th Overall. Personally I just don't have any interest in paying that high of a pick for a goalie. I know Kuemper has been great in Arizona but that's a hefty price for 2 years of a great but not elite starter.

From the latest The Athletic article on Kapanen the Canes apparently said "no chance" on the #13 available for Kapanen. I'd imagine they value that pick pretty highly.

I didn’t watch any Canes games. All I heard was they’re goaltending let them down and is the missing ingredient. Kuemper is a top three, top five (at worst) goalie on the planet. He’s in his prime and he’s cheap.

I just looked up Reimer and Mrazeks numbers in the playoffs and they look great. I guess it’s just people not knowing what the hell theyre talking about. Lol.

You guys seem fine in goal. I’ll go bother the Leafs. Haha.

man as much as I'd like Kuemper, can't make a deal that involves the #13 since the current tandem isn't THAT bad. I'm not even sure I'd give up the #13 for Gibson.

I'd say I'd be interested in making a move if we were to offload Reimer to say Ottawa, and build it around Ned + the NYR pick as a salary saver on your end, but anything involving the #13 probably won't work for us.

I personally think he’s the best goalie in the world.
Would you be willing to do Kuemper for our 2021 1st plus another asset? Aligns well with your lack of one next year and avoids us having to move the 13th this year. That first would likely be mid 20s.

Waddell just did an interview within the week saying they expect to be close to the cap again next year. It was pretty direct. If you believe him at all there’s no cost cutting coming other than to cut cost to make room for someone else.
I don't take everything Don says at face value. He will say what TD wants him to say and do what TD wants him to do even if it is the opposite of what he had previously said. And anyway, close to cap is where we are today.

Edit - others mentioned current salary.

In these particular playoffs, our goaltending was not the reason we lost vs Boston. The issue is the current 1-1a goaltending module is not a sustainable module to go by long-term. It's fine enough to split games during the regular season, but come playoff time one person is going to have to be the guy. Of all 16 teams that made it past the qualifying round, it could be debated that we have/had the weakest goalie situation of all of them. Having a true #1 goalie has been a long time need for this team, and is seen as our biggest hole with the development of a lot of our forwards/defensemen. We though Mrazek/Reimer were going to be a temporary solution until Ned was ready to come up, but he has not been killing it in the AHL as advertised, nor has he performed that well when called up.

I’d love to have Kuemper on this team. I’d hate trading the 13th oa for 2 years of almost any player(particularly a goalie), especially with the uncertainty with Covid.

I also wouldn’t like dumping players, with a 1st as part of the deal, but it’s not my money.

lastly, we’ve been disappointed in goalie acquisitions in the past, which makes us rightfully gun shy.

I get why AZ fans would ask though.

There are assets I'd deal for Keumper. But not a 1st, 2020 or 2021. Especially not in a year where so many goalies will be available as UFA or via trade and so few starting spots are available.

I like DaveG's idea of NYR's 2nd + Ned.

I don't think we will see Arizona taking back salary in this deal, so unloading Reimer or Gardiner or Nino would likely happen elsewhere. Maybe Nino or Dzingel would be of interest if Hall does not re-sign, but I doubt it.

I don't think Kuemper has enough of a track record to warrant a pretty high 1st.

He's only had what you can call a starter's load for an entire season once if I remember correctly.

That's not to say I wouldn't be interested, but it'd definitely be in that 2nd and prospect territory at most. I'd love if that prospect was Ned since he holds little value to me.

No no.....come back!!!!!!

The failure of the Canes in the playoffs had very little to do with the goaltending. I have a hard time believing there’s a single Canes fan that thinks us using the 13th pick in a decent draft for your boy is the cure to not enough backbone and a lack of offensive chemistry.

And apparently unlike you, I’ve actually watched some of your games. Good luck with.....all that. 14-2 in the last two games and you’re talking about our goaltending? That was an ass whooping.

I’m weary of that pick being moved in general. This is not buying into draft year hype or being unaware of historical outcomes for picks in that range. If you believe in the upside of this group, this will be the highest pick the organization possesses for a while. Outside of the perfect deal for a young core player, which most likely won’t materialize, make the pick. No short-term solutions. No trade downs.

If Coyotes decide to trade everyone, I'd love Garland. Fischer is also very good.

I think the Canes need another stud prospect in the pipeline who will be on an ELC when Svech and Necas get their next contracts. This 13oa is potentially that.

Teams need cheap young talent and the Canes are going to be out of it very soon.
We should have Suzuki and the 13OA pick on ELC during that time.
Possibly Rees and Keane as well. With quite of few other possibilities: Bokk, Drury, Kochetkov, and a couple of others from the 2019 as back ups or trying to force their way on to the scene.

as long as we can get a 2nd scoring line and consistently strong goal tending nailed down, the future is very bright for us.

I've liked Fischer for a while, he's never seemed to live up to his younger production. Also, he's trending in the wrong direction offensively. Apparently, not a particularly good skater, his defensive game has never been a strong point.

I've been keeping an eye on Blake Murray. It will be quite interesting to see if his trajectory continues. Bigger kid who has always been a goal scorer. He's steadily improved and if he dominates this upcoming season (size and age) w/Sudbury, then he's a guy I'd expect to make the jump.

very true. I felt like putting almost every name from the 2019 draft as roster possibilities in 21 or 22 slightly ambitious. Hopefully Blake hits another gear in his progression like he did this past season.

I don't think we should sleep on Bokk. I think he could turn into a core player at 2nd line wing. I really wish we would get him over here to NA so he can get used to the smaller ice, though. When it comes to Drury, I just have a bad feeling he will "Fox" us.

What is his status with the NCAA at this point? Isn't he playing professionally in Sweden now? If so, doesn't that kill his NCAA eligibility and his ability to "Fox" us?
