Take a look at the GA for this stretch and explain exactly how this was a good defensive team. This narrative that they were good on D but just had no scoring is not true.

Take a look at the GA for this stretch and explain exactly how this was a good defensive team. This narrative that they were good on D but just had no scoring is not true.

Because I think we were 8th best in the league at the end of year in goals against. Its also amazing what scoring first and having a lead will do for your goal against instead of constantly chasing teams

Interesting sample chosen, you look at the last 10 games they have an excellent 2.1 GA average per game.

Helle also slumped the back half of the year so that explains some of it.

Take a look at the GA for this stretch and explain exactly how this was a good defensive team. This narrative that they were good on D but just had no scoring is not true.

Hellebuyck struggled in that period.

Also if you look at that stretch, the Jets were shut out 4 times, and scored 1 goal 4 other times. So in your 23 game sample, that's 8 games, almost 35%, where they scored 1 or less. Conversely, the only lost 2 games where they scored 3 or more.

I just choose the back half didn't want to paste the whole season in here. This part is when the real hockey starts team tighten up and push for the playoffs.

My point is that we are not a good defensive team with just some bad scoring luck as some are pushing here. Good defensive teams rarely give up 5 or 6 goals.

Helly struggled in part because he was hung out to dry during this period. Goalies don't play in a vacuum the play on front of them has an impact.

I'm familiar with goalies not playing in a vacuum, I did play in goal when I played. Goalies can also struggle without any defensive issues in front of them.

The Jets weren't a lock down D unit for sure but their scoring dried up at a bad time during the year (no response to 8 games with 1 or fewer goals) and when the team was good defensively they couldn't score enough to support that effort.

Well Bergeron officially retires. I wonder if this ups the pressure on Bruins management to get something done for Lindholm/Scheifele.

I am not sure what they can actually do. Swayman must have some good value but really if we keep Helly, I would rather not trade for him. I would love Carlo but he isn't going to waive to come here so that leaves like a Frederic/Swayman deal. Calgary is in the same boat but they have Markstrom for 3 years. Boston better prospects are probably Lysall/Lohrei/Poitras/Harrison. No 1st or 2nd in 2024. You are looking at 2025 for picks but that might be a bad thing as 2025 should be a good draft.

Maybe though after the PLD trade and buying out Wheeler both Scheif and Helly are rethinking about signing back. Since the start of last year we added Nieds,Names,Vilardi,Iaffalo and Kupari. Effectively replaced PLD/Wheeler and added basically a full NHL line. Get an older Perfetti back and Ehlers hopefully not getting hurt and maybe its not as bad as everyone thinks. If Helly is happy and is thinking of resigning we will win games and maybe with that new found depth and some real rookies in the AHL as emergency we can spread the scoring out and play good defensively as well.

Back half of the year 42 games we were 14th in the league in GA/game.

Even the record setting Bruins had 5 games were they allowed 5 or more goals.

Also league scoring has increased, the median GA last year was 3.12 per game. So lots of high scoring games.

It's an interesting situation. I agree with you on not wanting Swayman if we are keeping Helle, but I am still wondering whether we do keep Helle. The Broissoit interview has me thinking there was discussion of him working in more of a tandem situation. I don't see Helle/Broissoit tandem happening -- Helle will get the lion's share of starts if he's here. Swayman/Brossoit seems much more likely as a tandem/platoon type setup.

And yet they finished top 10 in GA/game so clearly 2/3 of the league fared worse.

The second best defensive team in the Canes had 8 games of 5 or more GA. So a whopping two more games then the second best defensive team.

So looks like all teams have numerous stinkers.

Zacha-Coyle-Geekie is not a Stabley Cup team... they will be pushing hard

They have no picks to trade really... will have to look at giving up legit prospects

So if Swayman is part of the package for Scheif, then you have to trade Helle - the problem is that almost every team would need to dump a goalie as part of a Helle trade...

I mean he had 2 points in 3 games as a C his second season in the A and 13 points in 14 games as a winger. Hard to draw much from a 3 game sample especially since he also put 12 shots on goal in that 3 games. A bounce or 2 different and he scores over a ppg as a C. He put up .82 ppg as a C the entire year prior in the AHL. I think he scores at a comparable rate as a C and winger.
I guess I look at it more as 'why' was he moved to wing - Moose depth at C wasn't overwhelming... almost as much as question about Jets development strategy

Again, I'd love to see Cole step up as 2C but I'm not sold on penciling him in to start the season - and running him as 4C/PP might not get him the playing time needed. I just really hope we see Vilardi, Perfetti, Barron, Kupari all get significant time at C in preseason/camp.

I think if Scheifele is going to Boston, then we have to trade Helle to Buffalo for Middlestadt, a goalie and a high draft pick.

Bergeron is now retired. Any doubt in Boston about Bruins need for a 1C is removed. Buffalo's need for a goalie is undeniable.

Can Chevy take advantage of the situation? Or are division rivals Boston and Buffalo going to deal directly with each other?

It's a good question. My best guess is he was showing to be more NHL ready then expected so they elected to fast track him. Given we only had wing spots open (Scheifele, Dubois, Stastby, and Copp all ahead on the C depth chart at the time) they moved him to wing to get him ready to play that spot in the NHL.

Given they've used him at C in prospect tourneys and TC, plus Chevy's comments they clearly still see potential in him as an NHL center.

Sometimes developing a player's NHL skill set takes precedence over developing them as a center. With Scheifele, PLD and Lowry locked into center roles you wouldn't want Perfetti developing as center on the 4th line with random AHL tweeners that won't be able to read off him. This would stifle his offensive development. Much better to develop on wing with Scheifele or PLD as your center and one of Ehlers, Connor, Wheeler (last season) or Nino as your other wing.

Agreed. Once they acquired Dubois my guess is the focus shifted to getting him NHL ready for a top 6 role.

Now that we are down Dubois and possibly Scheifele in under a year they are looking to shift gears again.

From what I recall his first year in the A was mostly if not all as a winger. Overall a good % of his pts were pp that year (beleive around 50%), however as the year progressed the most EV scoring picked up which is what you want to see.
The following year beleive he spent a few games at C then played wing next to Gustafsson and saw an uptick in a Ev scoring.

I think he adapts quickly and saw better EV scoring as he gained experience in the A.

Idk if he can be a C or not in the he nhl depends how the coaching staff feel. I think there's traits that can go both ways.

At the end of the day one of vilardi or perfetti need to be a C next year. I think it may be vilardis to start bc it seems like coaches love size, but thing can change for sure.

Mittelstadt would be the return I think is fair for Helle... that is the deal that makes the most sense right now - if Im the Sabres I try for maybe DeMelo or Schmidt as part of a larger package

Best case scenario for Chevy is Mittelstadt and Swayman plus prospects for Helle and Scheif

We trade scheifele to Boston and in a compete now year we have 0 players with top 6 Cs with experience. Not to mention the obvious losing 40+ goals and one of our top play makers. I don't think Scheifele gets traded.
Don't think it happens but Scheif would be a nice fit in Ottawa... but play him at 1RW - just not sure what they have to offer

He was deployed at center his entire first year in the AHL. I watched near every game.

"Early in Moose training camp, head coach Pascal Vincent approached Perfetti for a quick chat and the subject of what position he felt most comfortable at was broached.

“I told him that I’d played both for my entire life, but I prefer centre,” said Perfetti, who played primarily on the wing for Team Canada at the recent world juniors in Edmonton. “I feel like I can make more of an impact on the game, come into the middle of the ice and get more puck touches.”

Versatility is important, but locking in on one position gave Perfetti a bit of a leg up when it came to focusing on his adjustment to the professional game."

The idea of trading schief (and his perceived "attitude problems") is more appealing than the reality of losing your 1C who scored 42 goals last year and the hole in the line up it creates

That said, if he isn't re-upping then I hope chevy has a plan to replace his production after this season. I hear that Matthews fella is going into the last year of his deal too lol
