Outside of winning IW this year, Thiem hasn't been a huge threat off of clay.

I mean he might win something other than the French, but I wouldn't expect it much.
He should've won the USO last year. He probably played the best Tennis of all players in that tournament. At this point in his career, he's as much a clay specialist as Wawrinka is/was: It's his prefered surface, but he can win big titles on the other surfaces as well, as proven in IW.

Yeah, I think it's realistic that he could win a non-clay major but I don't expect him to dominate.

Court's 11 Aussies is the biggest joke in sports. It was held at Christmas time and none of the other top women showed up. I've seen Chris Evert openly laugh at it on tv. Comparing her to Serena is also a joke.

Denis up against his nemesis today Struff in Stuttgart. On grass this time...
Struff has been Denis' kryptonite lately, but grass might be just what the doctor ordered as Struff is awful on the surface.

Looks like a miserable day in Stuttgart. Man, Europe has had absolutely lousy weather this spring just about everywhere but Spain.

Same result...Struff win.

Raonic gets a win in his comeback.

Felix on serve in the first 5-4 against Gulbis.

Felix gets the break at 7-5 to get the first set.

Felix takes the second set 6-3.

Nice clean match for him and only faced one break point. Good start to the grass season.

Onc could even argue that grass has the potential to be Felix's best surface. He already has a big serve that is only going to get more formidable as he puts on a little weight; he has the makings for a fine volley game, and he seems at ease at the net. As well, he can move his opponent around which creates errors on the slippery surface. Most noteworthy, though, is he has very compact groundstrokes, a huge plus on grass where the ball comes in very quickly. He has the reflexes of a mongoose, the results of which will take big chunks out of his opponent's reaction time, another benefit that gets accentuated on grass. In his first professional grass match, despite the fact that he looked like he was walking on egg shells early in the first set, Felix acquitted himself very well against Gulbis who has some very big wins on grass to his credit.

He's got Simon next. Crafty vet who should be a good test.

Denis' prospects on grass are another thing entirely. Where Felix glides, Shapo galumphs. He has the requisite big serve and big forehand for grass court play, but the latter is somewhat mitigated by the fact he has to cut down on his swing and he hasn't got that quite right yet. Many Struff returns of serve were catching him absolutely flat-footed on the baseline where Denis too often looked like a goalie trying to make a difficult save as the ball flew by him. His return game, never a strong suit, looked even worse today under these conditions. He really needs to go back to fundamentals and work on his movement and on adjusting his technique on this surface. Though today was Felix's first match on grass as a pro, I'd say FAA has a chance to become something special on this surface; Denis--well, let's wait and see, but a natural on the surface he is not.

Disappointing from Denis today, though to be fair between him, Felix, Milos, he did face the toughest opponent.

FAA/Simon and Raonic/Tsonga should both be fun.

Has anyone else seen the tweets from Pospisil? The last xouole of days, he's been laying out arguments for better compensation and other considerations for players.

Here's a sample

The business side of sports always fascinates me, so I find this pretty intriguing. I don't think there are easy answers, but, I do think that it's interesting how steep the drop off is for compensation. The 200th highest paid nhl player makes over $4M, where as the equivalent tennis player is scraping by.

I'm not sure what's triggered Pospisil to become so vocal, but his recent injuries have probably hit him hard.

Always entertaining on grass, Dustin Brown takes the first set off Zverev.

Tsitsipas in a real battle with Jarry. --- And Jarry wins that battle.

Felix up a little later today.

Little known factoid: career-wise, Dustin Brown is 2-0 against Rafa, both victories coming on grass (Wimbledon and Halle).

Brown is so mercurial--he probably should have won the second set but his loosey-goosey style can let him down sometimes. You can see why his best surface is grass. Doing the unexpected and jerking people around hither and yon is a test for traction on the surface, and not all players can handle that easily.

Ivan and the girlfriend sure don't talk to one another much. Lendl probably doesn't believe in girlfriends.

With some near miraculous shot-making (and luck) Brown defeats Sascha 6-3 in the third. It's such a delight to watch this guy play when he is on.

Ahead a break in the first set, Felix's strokes suddenly go south and now Simon is up 5-4....bit Felix raises his game and takes the set 7-5 with the help of a badly missed line call with Simon out of challenges.

Is Denis in danger of becoming the Nail Yakupov of tennis? In other words, estimable skills but low tennis IQ.

Crazy second set for Felix--the best of times and the worst of times, 4--all after a self-inflicted service break....and then of course he breaks right back and is serving for the match.

And a nice two set win against Simon despite some shaky moments.
