Isles' fan coming in peace (ignore my screen name if you will).

The Leafs added some needed offensive grit and veteran experience this year. Good move.

Their missing piece is clearly on the defensive side. Trading a top pairing Dman for either prospects or another Dman who would challenge their cap space makes no sense. Moving backwards even for the short term on defensive talent while banking on the potential growth of prospects is an awful idea.

The Leafs need to trade an NHL forward(s), picks and/or prospects for an established NHL Dman to go deep in the playoffs.

Fire away. I promise not to reply since this is not my turf.

MR is risky right now to put it without all the run downs. He panics like I’ve never seen before This year. I hope he sits down with Keefe soon. He needs to simplify his game. He’s off

Maybe but you trade Meyers 1 for 1 with Rielly and if not, why not? You might not like Rielly as a dman but saying he isnt a #1 D is ridiculous.

On March 12, teams can start to resign their players that are 1 plus years out. This would be the equivalent of the January 1 date before. So this would include Rielly.

This thread is f***ing painful to read. Yeah we're 13-3-2 and in 1st place in the league but we totally have to get rid of our best defenseman. Great job HF.

As long as I never see you complain about our team defence, I’m fine with you having that opinion.

You don’t think we improve defensively by trading one of the leagues worst defencemen in terms of defence?

The idea isn’t to trade him so we can get another shiny toy for the prospect pool. The point is to trade him so we can find our own D Toews (given away for 2 2nd round picks!) or Adam Pelech.

Rielly is better than both toews and pelech though.

Wait. Your definition of better isnt related to market value? Why am I wasting my time?

Again, that isn't what you asked for. I can see you have no legitimate response, so I'll happily accept you concede to my argument.

You asked me for a list of better players. Not "market value". E.g., I think Victor Hedman is a better player than Cale Makar right now. But who has better market value? Obviously Makar. All you asked me for is a list of defensemen better than Rielly. I gave it to you.

Look. I can agree to listen to component discussions but when someone advocates we lose a person of Riellys value to Seattle for nothing, he is nothing but a troll.

I literally never said the Leafs should lose Rielly for nothing to Seattle. Again, you have no legitimate arguments so you resort to making things up and moving the goal posts.

Look at my earlier posts. I was explicitly saying that because the Leafs will face cap constraints, they need to make tough decisions on contracts. I literally said, again, that "moving Rielly can alleviate those cap concerns while returning serious assets". Return assets. As in, not lose him for nothing. As in, a trade. I've repeatedly said that I view Rielly as a good, albeit flawed, player. I don't think he's vital to the structure of the team, and as such, could be a trade candidate to improve elsewhere and improve cap flexibility.

Just take the L bud. You have no cogent arguments and are now resorting to making things up. I'll graciously accept your humility.

Man some plays by Rielly today we're really, really basic plays that he just shouldnt be making this far into his career.

Why the hell is he pinching as the last man back on that first goal, he's always out of position and tries to make the aggressive play.

People defending Rielly shouldn't really be defending him, he's probably the worst defenseman on the Leafs this season at defence. Sure he gets points but he always has and will get points with his skating and vision, but man I've never seen him make so many glaring positional mistakes, reminding me of Tyson Barrie.

I hope it's just a blip for him, but honestly I wouldn't give him more than 5 million a year for what he's bringing this season,he's playing like a 3/4D dwinger so far this season. And I've been the the biggest Rielly fan since he was drafted, he shares my birth year.

2nd in the league in dman points.

I'm usually on board with you, but come on. The guy gets the lowest calorie points I've ever seen.

2 points tonight looks good, but what did he actually do to earn them? 5 foot pass to Marner at 5-on-3 who then does the actual work of finding the cross-seam to Matthews. 5 foot no pressure pass to Matthews on a 5-on-4 who shoots the puck through Price. He made more impressive passes to Montreal forwards in his own zone. Give any other D PP time with the top unit and they'll be flirting with PPG as well.

Re-watching the first Habs goal that many (including me) chastised Rielly on he's not all at fault there. Boyd should've been covering Kotkaniemi but instead moved in towards Tatar when Tatar was already being harassed by Tavares and Rielly was backing up in front of Tatar to stop him from just driving through.

Brodie also made a terrible change and was caught deep, which is why a forward needed to cover in the first place.

Rielly played it like he should have played it.

Boyd messed up on both of those goals though. Puck watching on the 1st goal, bobbled and stripped on the 2nd goal... And people are calling me crazy when I said he is the worst forward in the Leafs lineup right now.

Look who he passes too, unfortunately he has been a bit of a tire fire, in his own end this year.
Not sure what he was doing on the first goal, Barrie pinched , then it was like he pinched, turning into a huge breakaway.

How much time did the puck see the dzone on that line? Rielly doing a great job holding the puck in the ozone.

So we're giving him extra credit for not turning the puck over on a 5 on 3 now?

He's done some good stuff this season, but he's very obviously not driving play like he did in his 72 point season regardless of how many secondary assists he's sitting on right now.

He again was the best dman in the game who generated lots of chances

I can't believe Leaf fans want him traded. Rielly is playing fine.

If anything everyone's Defensive darling Jake Muzzin has put up many stinky nights. No one talks about trading him away. Or do they?

16 points in 19 games and is plus 1 and plays crazy minutes and incredible skating ability and is a great person and tremendous teammate and is offensively gifted ..
He’s not perfect defensively ..and doesn’t have a great slap shot ..
Ok .. name me one player who who is perfect without flaws
Cmon boys and girls , let’s give our heads a collective shake .. he’s just coming to his own as a Defense man his best years are still ahead of him
MR is a terrific top 5-10 player on Defense and could be top 3 consistently for the next 5-8 years

Even worse than Vesey ? Now that’s saying a lot

I've gotta give Mo some love tonight. I thought this was one of his better games this season. Score adjusted xGF% was the top of all Leafs, and it matches the eye test.
