Won't there still be a flat salary cap after the 2021-22 Season?

Well Rielly makes $5 and the Kessel retention is off the books at $1.2 or so so we can go up to $6.2 on a Jones deal without making any other changes. For example.

I think this is absolute push point but I don't think we can afford him with CAP da way he is playing this year ... he is all offense and plays all PP and bottom line not dependable in his own end ... and now he is making tons of bad reads on offensive push every game which is costing us goals against ... now with all that PP time he has 1 more point than Muzzy who you can rely on in his own end too ... can't see us even getting past Muzzy's AAV ... 5.5M would be my max position and that assumes we can sign Zach and Bogo 1st and then i am worried about how he looks when his speed is diminished which would be off da roster ... so term will be an issue too ... da more I think about it we look better as a team with another stay at home big defender who can skate like a Parayko and use CAP for 3rd line defensive centre and trade Kerfoot

Id give that 1.2 mill to hyman. Getting to a point where I would rather hyman than rielly which is crazy since I loved rielly.....he has just fallen off defensively and hurting this team

Honestly, I think what's happening to Rielly is that we finally have 3 other good top 4 defencemen, and it's hard not to compare them. I mean we got Brodie for 5m, and he brings so much to the table, that it's enticing to imagine what we could do with Rielly's 5m and the assets we would get for him.

If we go out and get a legitimate 2 way top 4 LD defender, I don't think we take a big step back. Rielly's offence no longer can drive a play, and his PP points are bumper passes to Mitch or Auston. Brodie, Sandin or even Dermott could likely put up big years offensively if handed that role.

He has been a turnover machine this season and that is very difficult to overlook despite his skills.

I posted this in the trade thread, but it's applicable here too.

It's pretty clear as to what Rielly brings to the table. He's an elite offensive D man, I don't think anyone questions that. We've long hoped that he could just get the right partner, and be a great all round #1D... well, it's been enough time, and enough partners, that we know that's not going to be the case. He's not good defensively, and never will be. For as long as he's good offensively, there will be a place for him, unless he can be replaced by someone, nearly as good as him offensively, but better defensively. Given his limitations, the question is going to be, price and term. It's a limited, but valuable skill set, but one that will expire at some point, and he'll be useless when his offense goes away. Too much dollars, and too much term is a bad combination with him. We've got another year, plus this year with him, so it's plenty of time to see if Sandin or Lehtonen can fill those shoes adequately enough.. but they have to be given that opportunity. I'm not saying fully replace his offense, but at least provide near the same overall game impact, at a fraction of the price.

Rielly is an elite offensive defenseman but also needs to be qualified in a few ways where he isn’t quite elite.

He doesn’t have that off speed game where he can corral the puck, settle down the page and regroup. Compare and contrast this to TJ Brodie whose calling card seems to be the ability to take the extra half second to control the puck, allowing the forecheck to back off and the team to regroup under pressure.

His ability to transition the puck up the ice can be great in a rush setting but not necessarily in a calm and collected pace like Kaberle used to be able to do with surgical precision. The name of the game here is an organized, smooth transition up the ice allowing teammates to enter the zone, puck distributed, etc.

Powerplay puck distribution lacks precision and fluidity. He doesn’t walk the line very well laterally.

Is his stick too short? He looks hunched over on the play and never gets much torque on his shot. Kaberle used a very short stick too for his control game so that isn’t atypical. But Gardiner played a similar transition role and his stick was very long. Guess it’s a personal preference but it looks awkward at times.

Let's keep him and worry about this next year. THere are bigger fish to fry like the stanley cup

At that point we are giving up assets to keep Rielly one more year, so there is a cost to that as well. Giving up a 1st to keep him seems like a bad idea.
Depends on cost. Like I said, this isn't that big of a concern. He's signed after next season. We are 1st overall. Go for the cup! That's 1000% more important.
WE are the Maple Leafs. We keep everyone we want.

Looked pretty good tonight. Though the whole team dominated rielly was solid and created a lot. He needs to be more aware on the ice and he will continue being a good 1D. Can't take poor routes or make bad pinches if he wants to be used as a 24+minute muncher

just curious, if we let Rielly go, Who is our number one defenseman? If you say Brodie, I just don’t see it. Plus it bumps everyone up the lineup.

brodie and holl? Brodie and muzzin? I mean we could pick someone up, but who? No number one d man is gonna sign for what we would be paying rielly .

Wondering who fills that role? I would rather move kerfoot to sign rielly
