Meh, the thing I recall about Vanek while watching him with the Sabres is a guy who comes out on fire the first few months of the season then he drifts off once February rolls around.

Since the beginning of 2014, he has 6 goals in 21 games (not including today's game) . Hardly impressive for a guy who has a good skillset.

For the exception of a decent but not spectacular playoffs in 06' (10pts in 16 gms) His playoff numbers are pretty uninspiring.

I will say, when on his game, his shot is lethal.

what has the guy had to play for? squat

the inevitable 1st round playoff exit for BUF on the plus side?

he has played on a second tier team (at best) that had little to no hope of success in the playoffs. hell they struggle to make the playoffs most years. give the guy an opportunity to play for a top tier team that is expected to compete for and win the Cup. my guess is his desire and will never be questioned, because the guy knows he has a legitimate chance of winning

So the guy only steps up and tries if the games matter? Sounds like Penner 2.0.

Vanek is too much of a floater. I never see him get into that "extra gear" that you want to see from a winger in critical games/situations. Big pass on him. Don't want him as a UFA either because he's going to be grossly overpaid. Would rather be patient and wait for Bobby Ryan to become available. Would much rather have him than Vanish.

You guys can't complain about some guys defense and then champion signing Bobby Ryan, he is as bad a defensive forward as there is in the league and adds nothing besides offense.

I am not against signing him because there is a place for one dimensional skilled players, but he is far from a "Lombardi Player"

Ha! I was thinking the same thing. Both players float, put up decent numbers but float. Hell look up Boobies playoff numbers if you wanna see vanish.

I think a lot of people here just want Ryan because it would be sticking it to the Ducks, which is cool, I understand that. But lets not make Ryan out to be anything more than a soft, one dimensional, inconsistent offensive player.

I personally think Vanek is the better player and would be a better fit on the Kings.

He isnt and Kopi and Ryan are friends;

I don't. I could care a less about sticking it to the Ducks. I was simply stating I take butt hurt Duck fan opinions with a grain of salt.

Vanek will cost far too much and someone will overpay. Plus he has ZERO ties to the Kings. Bobby Ryan still has his house here and in Idaho, and is real good friends with Kopitar. He also said how much he enjoyed playing on Kopi's wing and how much chemistry they shared. I honestly believe he'll sign here.

To me, it always felt as if Ryan was destined to be a King. As long as Lombardi wants him, I believe Ryan will sign here, and for probably a little less than he would sign elsewhere. I think becoming a King would be a childhood dream come true for him.

At the end of next season, both Williams and Ryan become an UFA. I still hope JW can be our 3RW while Ryan signs to play alongside Kopi.

People really think Boobie isn't going to ask for 7+ as well? Especially if Vanek proves its out there. Again as much as people try and bend arguements these 2 players are very similar in basically every aspect except how they score their goals. I think Vanek is actually a better playmaker as well. Though Boobie has him in age.

I feel like Bobby Ryan is realistically one of the best chance "big ticket" UFA signings for the kings, so I know that if DL paid the piper for him this year, that an extension would come very soon.

Also 13 assists. Don't know why you left that out. But when you add todays game, that's 22 points in 22 games no? Still hardly impressive?

Anyway, if we can spare the difference in trade value for a second, what cap moves would the Kings need to make in order to take on Vanek?

To be honest, I don't even consider a first to be in Toffoli's league. He's so untouchable. The definition of untouchable.

Vanek can do both.

Surprised no one here mentioned that.

;)

I think everyone is over Vanek. We haven't been plagued by the likes of Snow. Lombardi has a system and he doesn't deviate from it. If he overpays, he does so for defense and goaltending, he isn't going to do so for rental wingers. That is the position he values least. If Vanek were signed to a reasonable contract, you could coax an overpayment from DL, but as a rental, with his cap hit, and supposed price? You're setting yourself up for disappointment. You guys can spout all your want about history and how GM's overpay, but you don't know Dean Lombardi. I'd wager just about everything I own on him not going after Vanek.

Anyway, if we can spare the difference in trade value for a second, what cap moves would the Kings need to make in order to take on Vanek?

It depends on who the Kings acquire on defense. If they get someone like Amac, then nothing outside of 50% retention. If you retain half and give us Amac, then the deal will work out naturally. The bottom line is Lombardi doesn't trade major assets for rental wingers. It's against his religion. The only way he'd do it is if there were nothing else to improve upon.

However, given how Snow is demanding a first and such for Amac, in all likeliness we won't get him, and if we get any defenseman with salary, we couldn't afford Vanek. We would have to dump players like Stoll or Greene, which isn't likely going to happen. I know Isles are excited about what they're going to get, but there is very little potential at getting a deal done with LA for Vanek. Amac is another story, but Vanek to the Kings is a mirage.
