Vanek is too much of a floater. I never see him get into that "extra gear" that you want to see from a winger in critical games/situations. Big pass on him. Don't want him as a UFA either because he's going to be grossly overpaid. Would rather be patient and wait for Bobby Ryan to become available. Would much rather have him than Vanish.

While Habs goal is to ink Markov to extension, quietly talking to teams about deadline deal too. Kings are one of them (partner for Doughty)

i will believe it when i see it. 4th period is trash and equivalent to eklund

i would love to see Vanek, but not for the cost. the Mayor's article sums up what most already know when it comes to how Dean operates. Vanek is a rental and Garth Snow is looking for a life line to save his ass. Dean will pass on Vanek at the TD, but will try in the summer.

Vanek on Kopitar's wing would be fantastic. he is a good 200ft. player, with great skill. he's played very lazy in NYI, which i attribute entirely to the situation. he played a very smart two way game in BUF. if Vanek has the smarts he will see that and sign with LA. if he doesnt, F him.

What worries me about picking up another vet D is if the guy has lost a step and isn't capable of logging top mins with Doughty. Kings already have WM/RR. Why is a team in a playoff picture looking at moving a top pairing D?

On the whole Vanek thing.... I really can't wait for the deadline so the Vanek to LA stops. Can he help the offense? Probably... how's the guys defense? Will he be a defensive liability against playoff teams? How is his dedication? Is he willing to lay it all on the line for a team he's going to be on a couple months. Embarrassed himself over in SOCHI....

Of course as I typed that, Vanek has two goals today, though hey, it is against the Panthers. Seeing his lazy backcheck on some goals like his weak poke attempt on Kessel's goal the other day just made me shake my head in frustration thinking how that would be unacceptable here. His performance at the Olympics was another reason why I didn't think much of him. Grabner looked like 10 times the player that Vanek is.

and Ryan won't be overpaid?

Dean has to go after both. he can't "put all his eggs in one basket" and sit idle, just waiting for Ryan.

Vanek played both ends in BUF, now in NYI is a different situation. i've watched him for years due to having him in fantasy hockey. i love his game.

he is a perfect fit to skate on Kopitar's left side. if there is one thing he lacks it is a top gear to gain separation, but he uses his big frame to protect the puck. his 'speed' is equivalent to Kopitar, so the up ice transition of the two would match well. they wouldn't have to worry about one of them lagging behind the other. both guys play and protect the puck similarly, so the cycle would be very good. throw in TTT on the RW as the sniper and that line would be top notch.

I think the price for a Vanek rental will be too high, but dude, Vanek is a gamer.

The guy is like Jeff Carter and has a knack for getting the puck in the net.

In the playoffs with Buffalo, he's come up big. I couldn't disagree with you more.

You guys can't complain about some guys defense and then champion signing Bobby Ryan, he is as bad a defensive forward as there is in the league and adds nothing besides offense.

I am not against signing him because there is a place for one dimensional skilled players, but he is far from a "Lombardi Player"

We could certainly use his 35 goals/year average.

I agree, but whenever we have talked about acquiring or keeping players like that people there is always an outcry about how they are one dimensional and not Lombardi type players.

Yet when it comes to Bobby Ryan it seems people forget that he is a one-trick pony as well.

Yes and I heard he can't even spell the word "intense".

Not from me. I don't care if he isn't the prototypical Lombardi player. We need goals and he can provide many. Toffoli - Kopitar - Ryan would be a filthy top line.

And I put zero stock into what butt hurt Duck fans think.

Interested in hearing about Ryan's background with LA. Has he said he would like to play here, who is he friends with on the team all that good stuff. Would be an awesome fit.

At the risk of overgeneralizing hockey archetypes, I still argue we need 'playmakers' more than 'goalscorers' to get our current 30-40 goal scorers on the board now.

Habs fans have been chewing on Markov to LA rumours for well over a week, near as I can tell.

Depending on the construct of the deal, if Lombardi felt he could comfortably extend Markov, I say do it. We have a few guys (Clifford, Pearson, Greene, Muzzin) MTL could be interested in, to make it a hockey trade rather than a deadline selloff.

Habs fans have pointed out that Markov has slowed down a lot, though. It would be amazing to have him and Doughty on the PP, but I don't know what kind of minutes we could give him. Maybe have him with Voynov? Shrug. It would definitely be helpful imo.

Even slowed down he's eating 25 minutes a night right now. Cut that down to 20 if we need to, we still have Doughty, Voynov, Mitchell and Regehr capable of 20 each. I think that could work nicely for at least a couple years if not more.

Meh, the thing I recall about Vanek while watching him with the Sabres is a guy who comes out on fire the first few months of the season then he drifts off once February rolls around.

Since the beginning of 2014, he has 6 goals in 21 games (not including today's game) . Hardly impressive for a guy who has a good skillset.

For the exception of a decent but not spectacular playoffs in 06' (10pts in 16 gms) His playoff numbers are pretty uninspiring.

I will say, when on his game, his shot is lethal.
