I'm going to mention Magnus Hellberg again.

He has been claimed on waivers three times this season. Detroit has him on a conditioning stint in the AHL. Will they waive him again or are they looking to get rid of Nedeljkovic?

Hellberg's AHL stats:

2 gp, 1-1, 2.52, 0.937
(Grand Rapids most used goalie has 11 gp, 5-5, 3.90, 0.867. They have allowed 85 goals in 21 games)

He earns league minimum and is a UFA after this season.

But we have almost no way to improve the defense. Dahlin, Samuelsson and Power lock. Jokiharju is recovering and looks good in the top 4. Boosh is still injured, but it is unlikely they will put him on the bench when he is healthy. Only LD in the third pair instead of Bryson.
My take is sure to get a lot of hate but this is why I think we should just stick with the plan for this off-season. Most of the pieces are there, let the team play fast and loose this year and get confidence in their offense. Next off-season be aggressive in signing the pieces we know we need to improve team defense (G, B4 D, B6 F) but also we need to incorporate a system that is more defensively minded. I am hopeful that Granato can do that while not hurting our offense too much.

I set the games played theshold at 10, so Murray and Samsonov were left out as they are at 9 games played each. They are the two best goalies that moved over the off season.

Here is how the guys that have played 10 games have fared on their new teams this season with Anderson added for comparison.

I don't understand why wait? Thompson and Dahlin are on fire, the kids line is great, Our top 4 looks decent, or are we going to keep evaluate Pilut, Bryson and Fitz? It just doesn't make sense. Olofsson looks like he doesn't want to play here at all. I would at least try to trade him for Kapanen, Puljujarvi or someone like that, who may also need a change of scenery. It is also quite possible to find an LD for the third pair.

I think Adams should help his goalies, defenders, forwards and Granato in the near future, and not just evaluate the game of Olofsson, Pilut and Fitzgerald.

Since the start of the regular season, there have been a total of 4 trades league-wide that involved an NHL player.

It takes two to tango. Adams cannot make another GM make a move.

Most GMs wait a while before pulling the trigger on trades. Especially major ones that move the needle.

And just because talking heads say that GMs are talking, that does not mean that GMs are close to making trades right now.

Most of us knew goalies weren’t exactly pumped to come here. But its still depressing to see it written in such stark terms.

Hopefully our offensive explosion can change some minds going forward

And does Mittlestadt have a future here if he doesn't produce as a winger, 3rd line center or 4th line center?

I saw a lot of Hellberg in Milwaukee. I've always been surprised he hasn't had more NHL looks. He has the goods.

I wonder if the teams performance so far this season, and if it continues this way will help them attract better UFA's or maybe convince some players to waive their NTC's for Buffalo. Seems like a fun group to play with, high offensive output and kids really coming into their own now. Might be starting to look like a better situation now than in past years.

Sorry, but I don't believe in this nonsense. Because I did not offer any high deals. There are players in the league that are available for trade and there are teams that tank for Bedard. There were also deals, even the Bear for 5th was also a deal.

I don't see it as waiting I see it as developing offense and confidence this year. Then tighten up D this year. I don't believe there is a goalie that will fix our defense problems as we currently play. I am all for trading Olofsson and some of our bottom D. But a 7D and G isn't going to magically fix our GA.

Like I said, I don't expect anyone to agree with me lol.

Goaltending wise? I'm not sure. We've seen them gather and then squander player goodwill in the recent past. If they start dialing in their PK to be at least league average, it might make someone interested next year in being part of a bridge to whatever is next. But that would also be a shift in the GM's stated outcome of not blocking Levi.

Ok, finding a good goalie right now would be difficult, that's an off-season challenge, but finding #5D or #6D + trading Olofsson for change of scenery seems real. Our D will have to get better and maybe the third line will start producing, and this is a very big boost to the way the team is playing now.

Who maybe need 2-3 years in the AHL.

You asked why wait.

I am telling you that GMs are not making deals left and right at this point in the season. So, while Adams might want to make a move, other GMs may not have the same level of urgency.

Although, Adams has been patient to this point in his career and I doubt that changes.

Pretty amazing to see how closely save % tracks with xsave % for most of these guys. Kind of backs up the line of thinking that there's a handful of elite, a handful of very bad, and everyone else that are mostly a product of the team in front of them.

Are you sure no one wants to make moves? I'm not sure and we don't have any information, only rumors that may or may not be true, but there is also logic and guesswork that we can use which team is willing to trade and which players are available. There are also direct speeches by GMs and players from which we can build.

It wasn't an endorsement, just pointing out it would be a shift by the top brass. If the team continues to burn out goal lights and they decide the limiting factor is in net, I would think that would change.

It also goes back to an older conversation about how teams work to their goalies strengths if they can.

Well, we needed goalie for a long time, this is not news. Although this of course does not mean that Adams should put all his money on goalie and forget about defense and attack.

There have been a total of 4 deals made involving NHL players over the past two months.

That happens in about 10 minutes on trade deadline day.

Here is the list of trades that were made in December and January last season, for comparison.

This is not a busy time of year for GMs to make trades.

But are deals still possible? There are players who have been on the block for a long time or who need a change of scene right now, there are already teams for sure who would like to little shake up a bit if they started badly. Again, I think small trades are still real.

Possible and probable or likely are two completely different things.

It is possible that Adams could make a trade soon to improve the team. I would not say that it is likely to occur given that we are in one of the dead periods with respect to player movement in the NHL league year.

There are certain windows where moves are probable. This is not one of them.
