He played 7 games in 2 weeks.

If he has a save percentage .910 or higher, the only reason that he wouldn't play 50 or more games will be injury. Hear me now and believe me later.
You can't extrapolate the mental and physical fatigue from a 2 week 7 game sample to 50 games over 6 months.

Shoulda got one game in
It is different in large part because of the extreme differences in the mental part of the game for goalies.

An 18yo F can be hidden down the lineup. You can shelter a young D. Goalies do not get to be sheltered in any way and that creates a ton of mental and emotional challenges. Knight's struggles in that area have had more obvious impacts. But, Hart's worst season was the year after he stopped working with the mental skills coach that he had until that point in his career.

Levi the Jedi could be a unicorn. But, I think there is a reasonable chance that he is not ready to be a 40+ start NHL goalie this season. And by fast tracking him to the NHL may work fine or it may cause Knight/Hart-ish issues. Given the need for Levi to work out long term, I do not believe that pushing him to the NHL faster than guys like Savoie or Kulich or Rosen is a smart approach.

Also, I do believe that the added workload is a thing. Levi has never played 50+ games in a season. To perhaps expect that from him at the NHL level in his rookie pro season and for a team where missing the playoffs will be a huge disappointment, is putting a ton of pressure on a kid.

Counterpoint: in NHL 23 I’m about to start the 2023-24 season and Levi has an 86 rating.

Although Craig Anderson has an 82 rating.

Let’s not act like this is someone expected to play games while chain smoking and pounding high life and foot longs during intermission who works loading boxes over the summer. It’s a kid who probably has a personal training/dietician/psychologist staff worth more than you are, definitely more than I am, playing for a billion dollar organization that straps monitoring devices to their players bodies to track their workloads, who might see 45 games. If there’s any group on this planet that might be able to extrapolate that data, it’s a modern sports franchise.

Has Ullmark been duscussed as an option for us? I know, the breakup was not long ago but if there us a possibility, wouldn't that path be worth exploration? I don't think Ullmark has some beef with Adams but we wouldn't know for sure. Or am I missing that we have tried to inquire already?

Until Swayman gets his new deal, I don't know if Ullmark is on the trade block for the Bruins.

And if he is, there are the questions about whether Boston would want to move him in the division.

True, but I wonder if the cap situation makes them more agreeable to move him. Indeed, the division thing may be the biggest issue here...

I just wonder if they navigate things by looking at making other moves with guys like DeBrusk, Grzelcyk, & Forbort all having one year left before UFA. And they can get a 23 player roster under the cap without making moves, most likely.

I don't think he's a realistic option. Adams wants guys who want to be in Buffalo and Ullmark dragged out the FA process 2 summers ago eventually signing with Boston when all reports out there say that our offer was the same or better than Boston's. Pretty sure Adams will want nothing to do with him.

How much worse should a goalie be in Buffalo statistically?
I mean Anderson had 90.8% this season but we all know that our goalies are put in tough situations (mostly guys Risto drifting from net front while someone loses a puck battle no contest).

People are wasting their time talking about Levi who is going to be in Buffalo no matter what this year. They should be angry as f*** that he’s being saddled with someone who can’t play. Without an experienced and steady partner the pressure on Levi is tenfold. If he fails…the team fails. if he needs a step back…the season is over and Adams has provided nowhere to turn. The options are goalies they flat out did not trust to play when the games mattered and they had any other option. Now that’s the plan to insulate Levi?

when it fails. When it costs us another season…and jeopardizes Levi’s development…I hope Adams gets fired. Good job faring it down. Good job drafting. We need a competitive GM now. Someone who can build a full roster by their fourth year. Not this coward.

The people who believe Levi can do what no goalie ever does should be the angriest at Adams for asking him to do it with his hands tied behind his back. Walking a tightrope without a net. Because doing things is hard…or something,

Buffalo had bad goaltending most of last season (the majority), behind terrible team defense and 1/3 of the roster going through early career growing pains, and they missed the playoffs by one point. This season all those young players are at step forward, and team defense is obviously going to be a priority. If they miss the playoffs again, it will have a hell of a lot more to do with other problems beside goaltending.

Still some teams with 3 goalies listed other than us, wonder if we take a swing on one of those?

Pens have deSmith or Ned to waive, Seattle maybe Drieger?
Flyers no idea what they do if they can't find a deal for Hart. Leafs probably buyout Murray, wonder where he will sign after that.
Kings no idea either about them.
For the Flames wolf is not listed on their roster but they are trying to shop Vladar it seems.

Crazy year for goaltending. We might even see teams not locking things down until camp, and then other teams holding out on making a decision because they think they can pounce on some cheap leftovers after buyouts and waivings.

Yeah, the music definitely hasn’t stopped on the goalie musical chairs game yet. I think there’ll be at least a few guys moving around before the season starts.

Some of the takes on here are pretty wild. Still multiple months until the season starts and some are calling for Adams job, a guy who has collected one of the best group of players ever under the age of 25 I can think of. One of those players is a goalie who was just voted the top prospect on the Sabres by this very site.

Levi is going to play the majority of the games this year (barring injury, or some catastrophic plunge in performance). They have several backup options, and some of the names being thrown around are not clear upgrades to them. Helly and Saros are pipe dreams, not only for the cost (salary AND assets), but also because they would be blocking Levi. In fact anu goalie would cost assets, but why not see what you have first. Maybe Comrie rebounds. Maybe UPL finds some consistency. If not they can pivot early on.

Of course everything could go wrong, but that can happen to any team at any time. They are trying to build something long term here, but in doing so, sometimes you have to some chances and trust the process, especially in salary-capped league.

One thing that scares me about Helleybuyck is that he's not great at HDSC. Last year Andersson and UPL both had better % above xHDSC. Buffalo gives up an outsized portion of it's xGA via HDSC.

Don't worry. We aren't Helley shopping. Zero chance imo.

What confuses me that there is no talk about Helles leadership role in winnipeg, Scheifle and Wheeler take all the blame but Helle is somehow the nice guy.

I’ve never seen so many people talk themselves out of getting a consensus top 5 goalie (who probably should have been a hart nominee at least once) when we’ve been bottom 2 in goaltending the last 2 seasons.

He’s available, we have the assets and cap space. This should be an all time no brainer.

Instead let’s go with a 21 year old, a 24 year old who wasn’t a good AHL goalie, and the guy who has passed thru waivers multiple times.

I'm not opposed to the idea, but there are some pretty clear rebuttals:

1) the cost will be high
2) might only be for one year, as opposed to having the futures we'd have to trade potentially play years here
3) we have what most believe to be premium talent at this position already

I still would like to upgrade the position for this year, but I'd be hesitant to give up too much.

It's not like a RD, where we really don't have premium pieces in the organization and could use short term help as well. This makes D a bigger priority for me than G, and I'd be more willing to give up premium assets for it.

A) I think we need an upgrade in goaltending

b) I think Helle's stats indicate he may struggle behind our defense/with the way we play

These are not mutually exclusive thoughts.

Helle is great at medium and low danger chances. Buffalo’s problem is high danger chances.

Also Buffalo wasn’t bottom 2. Comrie was one of the worst goalies with that many starts. Anderson and UPL were middle of the pack.

Anderson was actually top 10 against HDSC.

I would be fine with rental Helle. I'm fine with 1st+

I would also be willing to pay 1st+ for Hart (of course, after it is known whether he is involved or not)

Ullmark or Swayman could be an option even in the division, we have young centers, and for Boston it is necessary as air, they literally have nowhere to take them and no one will give them to them.

Well, Markstrom's contract is not that big and not for 5-6 years. Adams wanted to get Vladar return from Boston in trade Hall, although he doesn't really look like an upgrade right now, but who knows.

I have already said my opinion on Gibson, I think he would be an interesting option and he will improve in another team.

Yes, and there is already another GM and maybe Samsonov will be available.

DeSmith - 134 GP - 91.2% SV - 2.81 GAA

UPL - 46 GP - 89.8% SV - 3.47 GAA

Comrie - 47 GP - 89.7% SV - 3.32 GAA
-Regarding Helle, we’re doing this in a vacuum. We have no idea what Winnipeg wants. You say you’d offer a 1st plus. Maybe the Jets only want a deal that either includes a solid replacement goalie (i.e. Vanacek) or “win-now” pieces in general.

-Regarding Boston, again we’re hypothesizing as posters what would be required. Maybe Boston wants to keep a two headed monster in net, which along with a strong defense group, will keep them in the playoffs even without Bergeron or Krejci.

-I wouldn’t mind Markstrom myself, but I doubt Adams is looking to add that type of salary. He also carries a NTC of some sort and I doubt he’s looking to come to Buffalo. Vladar just doesn’t seem like that much of an improvement on what we already have in Luukonen/Comrie.

-I get your opinion on Gibson, I think the term would mitigate the desire to trade for him. Also don’t think he’d be a great fit with “the vibes”. Also wondering how much Anaheim is willing to retain bc full price for that long is almost negative value but I doubt Anaheim would accept that.

-I personally doubt Samsonov is available,
Particularly in the division. And if he did get dealt to us, Adams would probably have to overpay and he’s shown he’s unwilling to do that.

-DeSmith’s #’s certainly look better, but those can also be attributed to who you’re playing in front of. Our defense last year had a lot of nights where they were basically an open sieve. I also don’t think DeSmith is of a high enough caliber to really make a difference between Luukonen/Comrie. Similar to Vladar
