Buffalo Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres have no choice but to do something about their goaltending this summer.
They were two points shy of making the playoffs for the first time since 2011 and despite the brilliance from the likes of Rasmus Dahlin, Tage Thompson, Jeff Skinner, Dylan Cozens and Owen Power, it was the lack of steady netminding that cost them.
The Sabres have their goalie of the future in Devon Levi ready to take the NHL by storm be it next season or shortly thereafter, but they'll need to get something figured out.
They've got Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Eric Comrie still under contract for next season, but it would be a seismic gamble on the part of GM Kevyn Adams to run a tandem of Levi with Luukkonen or Comrie into next season with the fanbase frothing at the mouth to get back to the playoffs.
This is where bringing Hart into the picture makes sense. Buffalo trading for him to pair with Levi would give them a young goalie further down the road in his career who can help show the 21-year-old the ropes and allow him time to better acclimate to the NHL.
Making a deal for Hart would likely involve sending Luukkonen the other way as well as a first-round pick or a prospect, both of which the Sabres have in spades. Adding Hart to the situation wouldn't stunt Levi's progress and, if all goes well, it times out perfect to have Hart pass the torch to Levi should it come to that.
If Levi doesn't progress the way the Sabres hoped, then they've got Hart to handle the workload.
Having assurances in goal is something Buffalo hasn't had since Ryan Miller was around and adding Hart would bring it pretty close to doing so.

Any interest in Laurent Brossoit? He's a UFA and was the starter for Vegas in the playoffs until he got hurt and Adin Hill took over. Put up very good numbers and is 30 which works for Levi's timeline. He suffered a groin tear but should be OK for next season. If Vegas signs Hill they still have Logan Thompson and who knows if Lehner plays next season but Brossoit has a better opportunity here to either be 1A with UPL backing him up and Levi in Rochester or Levi wins out of camp and they trade UPL for something else.

LeBrun did an article yesterday and it sounds like all the Vegas goalies want to stay (Hill, Brossoit, AND Quick) but with Lehner and Thompson also signed that doesn't seem likely.

LeBrun also believes that Nashville doesn't move Saros.

Other goalies he sees moving on to other teams instead of being resigned:

Talbot
Reimer
Greiss
Korpisalo
Nedeljkovic (for all those bitter we didn't get him from the Canes)

Guys he believe may or will stay:

Halak
Andersen
Raanta
Jones
Varlamov

?:

Jarry

Broissoit will be useless next year. Groin tears are terrible on goalies. He’ll be hesitant to move much to avoid re-injuring himself. Unless he’s signed to a long term contract.

Lehner won’t be back. Ever. Vegas has no idea where he is. Which sucks for him because he gets a ring this year, but… you know.

If we’re gonna attempt to fleece Vegas, give me Thompson and Whitecloud. They get 6K and all you can eat wings

Just trade for Vladar and Hanifin and get it over with. Would make my ranking of the off-season an 8.

I doubt that Vladar gives the Sabres anything more than UPL or even Comrie will.
I thought about that and you’re probably right. I think I just always tuned into him on good nights. Looking at his metrics I could see things turning for the worse here.

Think Lance has said a couple times now the Sabres want UPL and Levi competing in every practice and they think that will bring out the best in them. He’s certainly right that UPL had nobody to compete with in practice all year to push him.

I think there are a lot of names out there that are merely different. And different does not guarantee better.

Carrying the cons talk over from the Draft Thread, I feel like Korpisalo isn't even a decent upgrade over Subban let alone the NHL guys. In Rayzorism - not atoll.
Let's discuss what we're happy with then:

Here's every goalie that'll matter for this discussion, and their contract situation.

Most are happy with Hellebuyck. Some aren't due to price and extension cost.

Are we happy with Hart? Gibson? Varlamov? Jarry? Andersen? Vladar?

Figure they run with Hill and Thompson again. It's a good combo.

Gibson, Korpisalo are both style and risk no's for me.

Talbot seems cooked. Same with Quick.

Hart and Hellebuyck seem like they will be asset heavy to acquire, Helle with the expiration issue. Vejmelka seems like he could be expensive too but I'm intrigued.

I'm kind of interested in borrowing Andersen on a 2-year UFA deal and seeing if they can get a 45-35 split out of him and Levy.

The challenge with Andersen, and Raanta, is that the talk is that they both are going to re-sign with Carolina.

Given the rep for the bad goalie environment, I think the trade route is the more likely option for Adams to find an upgrade. The question will be if he will be willing to pay the freight...

So once again, despite all the desire to do something about goaltending (myself included), we're once again at over-pay for an option you like, or pick a cheap option you hate that probably doesn't change anything.

No wonder they keep punting this...

I don't think I've seen our goalie situation summed up any better or more succintly.

The "issue" with this is that we ARE in a position where we can overpay for a good option and not decimate our system/young players.

So, who are the guys we could trade for? In that list, it looks to me like: Gibson, Hart and Helle. Demko and Saros would take a mountain of assets.

Gibson and Hart are firm NOs from me. Don't trust either one.

Helle would be feasible....BUT.....there is some evidence that his style may not mesh well with our defensive "system"...................AND he wants a fat new contract.

So then we're left with trading for a guy like Vladar or Swayman -- who may be better than what we currently have...........or they may be more of the same.
