Solid asset management plan.
What asset?

time to grow up, kids. These are two nothing players and waiting around to see if the can up their value at the cost of games IS WHAT JUST COST US ANOTHER SEASON. You want to throw away another one on guys who have shown nothing? We just did it. They’re terrible and it’s time to win.

Do you want to give Joker and Bryson another year too? See if they figure it out? Or can the year we already wasted be enough already? You don’t get the time back. Even if it can get you a fifth round pick instead of a seventh.

UPL is frustratingly inconsistent, but he isn't as bad as a lot of people here think. I don't think he clears waivers. After 30+ games in the NHL, he won't return to Rochester happy. He's just not that type.

I don't think Levi plays in Rochester next year, but UPL isn't stable enough to insulate him. You might be able to get some value in a package for a legit goalie. But what teams are willing to downgrade from a legit goalie?

What's worse is that there aren't any decent free agents out there either, so it's a seller's market. Are we ready to trade the farm for a goalie? Does overpaying for G limit your ability to address the hole at D? Which has the bigger impact?

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm expecting the situation next year to be far less than perfect.

I think the upgrade over UPL & Comrie has a much bigger impact on the overall results for a season than upgrading on Jokiharju at 4D.

Better defensive structure would go a long way in fixing our goalie situation.

If they work on that during training camp and also improve the PK it will bring the goals against down as much as any goalie we could get in trade or free agency. Getting a true defensive stud top four D would help a lot as well.

My bet is that they keep Levi up, one of UPL or Comrie stays, and then move the other one in trade because they'd lose the other one on waivers.

The thing is….yeah…they kind of have to move on from both at the NHL level if Levi is going to be here. You need a steady vet presence with him…not guys who haven’t figured their own shit out and you can’t trust to fill in and play a lot if Levi has rookie struggles that every goalie has. You’re hurting the season and you’re hurting Levi. They had a year to earn something and they blew it. It needs to be changed ESPECIALLY if Levi is in the NHL. If Levi is in Roch…you can pick one of them and still need a steady veteran who can start in the NHL.

Levi and UPL make about the same rate of big saves. However, UPL lets in a few more bad ones.

Comrie, while not letting in bad goals, cannot make a big save. The result is, Comrie put up numbers worse than Aaron Dell this year. We were ready to run Dell out of town on a rail with his .890 SP last year. Comrie has been even lower. SubDell!

Comrie also had the lowest expected save percentage in the entire league. He got stuck with a lot of games without Samuelsson and they got run over every night.

He should be waived down to be the Rochester goalie next year. No one is putting him on their NHL roster. and if they did they’re just waiving you another Comrie you can take instead

Funny listening to Marek talk about UPL and some of his guests saying he's well regarded. I suppose our views may not match that of others.

He was NHL Rookie of the Month in January. He had his moments.

Yes he has. I expect if they do move him, that a team with solid structure and play to limit the chances he struggles against most, he'll look good and Buffalo will look bad for making the deal if they deal him.

I don’t understand why having Levi means UPL can’t be on the Sabres. The kid isn’t starting 82 games.

Probably the idea that they would want a vet to help Levi along more than another younger player who may also have his own struggles.

Solid asset management plan.
Just like they wouldn’t retain for the price of a 4th or 5th round pick, the front office has demonstrated they don’t really care that much about lower value assets simply for the sake of accrual

Not sure how much light a vet can shed in your forwards blowing the zone early all game. :ha:

UPL is a nothing player?

UPL is one of the main reasons we got back into the playoff race after the 8gm losing streak. We were 26-20-4 at the all star break. We went 19-9-4 from the end of the losing streak up to get there. UPL was in net for 13 of those 19 wins.

December he was 6-2-0 with .908sv%
January he was 6-2-1 with .907sv%

Those two months got us back into the mix.

Then UPL struggled, like a lot of players, after that 10 day break around the ALL Star game. He never really found his game again until his last start. But couldn’t build on it because Levi got here and he didn’t play again.

He‘s a rookie goalie so it’s not that shocking he would have ups and downs throughout the season. But when we needed the boost most he bailed us out.

It would be terrible asset management to just get rid of UPL for whatever.

Given how his tenure in Pittsburgh went and how the Buffalo tenders have seemed to be less than the sum of their parts, I am of the opinion it is time for Bales to go.
