We aren't winning the cup this year. If we make the playoffs, play UPL and Comrie and let the chips fall where they may.

Thats said, I wouldn't mind moving for a goaltender for the stretch run TO the playoffs.

I'd still take the chance on Levi pulling a rabbit out of the hat, a la Dryden

We really only need average goaltending to make a deep run, given our offense

The goalie folks talk about how long it takes for a tender to get used to playing behind a team and them being comfortable with what that goalie is going to do so even trying to dip into the goalie market probably doesn't equate to settled tending. Think of Ullmark last year with the Bruins and how long it took him and them to get comfortable with one another.

A fair point. I still wouldn't mind testing that theory with Soros. :p

I say two more bad consecutive games from UPL, they need to send him down to Roch and tell him he needs to get them into the playoffs. Just go with Comrie/Andy.

Not sure if they can since Comrie is almost as inconsistent as Luukkonen.

Also, Subban/Houser have been a very good tandem for the Amerks. I don't know if UPL moves the needle there as much as them getting a competent AHL center would.

I am also realizing the roster limit is lifted in like a week and three goalies isn't going to matter. If Adams adds to the roster, he just needs to play they paper game with Ullmark and maybe Quinn/Peterka until then.

When it comes to advanced stats Comrie is near worst in the league while UPL is middle bottom and Anderson is damn near the top. Comrie's save percentage for low danger shots is just about worst in the league.

ooof

Wish Anderson could play more games. Cannot go with Comrie with those stats. UPL also needs to be better

This should put the rest of blaming the defenseman on this team for goalie issues. Comrie and UPL are trash when there is a retired 41 yr old guy destroying each in save percentage with the same team in front of him.

No we wouldn’t. I mean, c’mon.

Yeah, we would. Above average to very good goaltending given our offense and we are winning the overwhelming majority of our games. Possibly second in the NHL to only Boston (which would be exhibit A as to why the current playoff format sucks, just as the 80s format did, for the same very reason)

Hell, last year Anderson came back in late February, simply gave us below average yet NHL level goaltending and we were on a 100 point pace against good teams. We were in a big hole due Dell and worse goaltending before. The offense is much improved from this time last year, and we are talking about much better goaltending. We'd be a 120 point team.

But, Anderson cannot play a starters load, obviously

I'm glad we didn't sign Jack Cambell.

I know I wanted to. Just desperate to try something after having to endure the likes of Aaron Dell for 12 games last year. And Carter Hutton before that.

Comrie had a very good game yesterday and has now won four starts in a row.

Fingers crossed that he keeps it up. If this team could count on above-average goaltending down the stretch it could be the difference between the playoffs and missing.

Playoff chances for sure are going to be dictated more by their ability to prevent goals. I'm hoping some of what we saw yesterday with the forwards swarming back into their own zone and some zone denials by the defensemen as part of that keeps up as much as getting the goalies moving toward stopping what they should stop.

There may be some silver lining there. He has had a rough season and getting him straightened out to end the year would be an advantage going into next year too.

We can hope that Stillman + Greenway signal a shift in playstyle where being defensively responsible becomes a priority along with playing a fast transition/rush game.

You're right though, better defense by forwards would result in an improvement in goalie play. At some point, the improved defensive play leads to more confidence in net and then your goalies start stealing games.

Somewhere between the two is a mesh point or sweet spot that this team needs to find. The glaring problem is a young team so consistency is a struggle.

The Sabres are now 2-5-1 in Anderson's last 8 starts. He has a .912 Save% over that stretch. So, he is playing well, he just isn't getting quality goal support right now.

On the other hand, Comrie has won 4 straight starts with an .892 Save% over those four games...
