Marty actually had a good discussion about this today on Sabres Live. He correctly pointed out: (1) that the most important thing is for UPL to play a lot of games. His development has been delayed/hampered by injuries and the COVID season. Right now, he is getting those games in the NHL, but he can also get those games in the AHL and work on his consistency, workload and improving some fundamentals (such as rebound control and puck tracking); (2) carrying 3 goalies is a terrible idea because it diminishes playing time, creates less flexibility in your roster spots, and leads to more chaos with the team; and (3) there is no way they are going to expose Comrie to waivers or trade him. Give Comrie a conditioning game in Roch and then send UPL back down. If Comrie is terrible after 5-6 games, re-visit the issue then. It's way too soon to say that UPL is better than Comrie. Comrie was good early in the season and then had a bad stretch when the D was starting to get depleted. Let him reset and get another chance. Many people on this board said UPL wasn't even an NHL goalie 2 weeks ago.

This year, UPL has been better than Comrie objectively (though season to date, still slightly sub Dell)

Play the best players. Give Comire a 10 day conditioning stint. If UPL keeps up his improved play, bye bye Comrie

That simply won't happen. Anderson is 100% retiring after this season. So next season if you dump Comrie because UPL looks better this season then you are once again in the goalie market next year. Also given the inconsistency of UPL what happens if his game falls off again, or he doesn't look ready for a back-up role next year? Now you are in the same boat you were this past off-season. It's too risky.

My thoughts exactly. We are POTENTIALLY just now getting to a scenario where we have viable NHL goaltending solutions. Jettisoning Comrie would be very unwise at this stage; we don't even know what we really have in him yet.

Objectively UPL has had a healthier D core playing in front of him.

UPL had an AHL D corps the last couple of games, one of those games he only had 5 D

He got the job done by making the big saves. Cannot expect him to do what he did last night all the time, however

It's encouraging that UPL has gotten a bit more confident and has calmed down in net recently. It's something to build on. He's going to get games - that is the team's stated plan - and that will be in the AHL once Comrie is healthy.

This is it exactly. It's great that UPL is looking solid the last couple of games, but the only way he builds on this is to keep playing games. Playing 1 every 3 games in the NHL isn't going to be nearly as good for him as playing as the lead guy in Rochester.

The guy I feel worst for in this situation is Subban -- he finally looks healthy and good but he's going to lose his grip on the starter's role in Rochester through absolutely no fault of his own. UPL is going to get a ton of games in Rochester.

And hey -- Andy is still like 92. He could still get injured which could necessitate another UPL call up.

Hell there were some posters loudly claiming he wasn't even an AHL goalie 2 weeks ago.

it's not a ringing endorsement of UPL. It's more an indictment of Comrie

We have a chance to make a playoff push, have elite talent up front. I'm not wasting another season just to play the experienced but shitty player when someone, who is not quite ready, but is better than what we currently have, waits in the minors. The time has come to play our best players

and Comrie is what? 28? Means he's minor league fodder

Eric Comrie said hes ok on a conditioning stint in Rochester. Right attitude to have with UPL coming off two strong game against tough teams.

I'd like UPL against Tampa and Boston over the next 10 days

“The Vegas game was the best game I’ve seen him play so far,” Tuch said. “The penalty shot, it was like he’s been there 100 times before.”

General manager Kevyn Adams said on Wednesday the Sabres will look at possibly carrying three goalies – veteran Craig Anderson has served as the backup all season – on the roster. That scenario that rarely works out well because playing time becomes limited.

The Sabres would have to make a roster move to keep an extra goalie.
