Huh. You guys gonna believe all these anonymous "insiders", random nameless "scouts", or the geniuses on these boards who think they know everything that goes on inside the lockerroom; or a guy that is actually IN the lockerroom, and playing FOR the coach being discussed? Or does this not fit what you're sellin'?

From the PGT:

Good on Stepan:

"Our problem isn't with our coaching staff, and it hasn't been," Stepan told the Daily News in the Bell Centre after Saturday's defeat. "And I think if you asked everyone on our team, they would say the same thing, that that's not the case here.

"Tonight, I thought we were OK at times," Stepan continued. "I thought we had a lot of chances to score goals. (Canadiens goalie) Carey Price played a pretty good game, they go up 1-0 early and we're kind of chasing again. But I don't agree with (Avery's tweet) at all, no. I think it's safe to say that all 23 guys on our roster would say that's not the case."

Good. Trade Gaborik, buyout Richards and still can Torts.

Do you actually believe that a player who is currently on the team would ever say anything negative about the coaching staff to the media? Would you tell your boss that they suck? I know I wouldn't.

If he was really mad at the coach or thought a change needed to be made, he could either

A. Give no comment.
B. Not go nearly as far as he did. He could have said one sentence saying he didn't agree with what Avery did and left it at that (leaving it unsaid that he may not have disagreed with what he said). Instead, he went on for almost 30 seconds.
C. Give a non-answer answer.

But yea, keep cherry picking the **** that fits your reality.

You don't do that. I don't think I have ever witnessed a player to say something negative about a coach. You stab yourself in the back by doing that.

You are labeled unreliable from that point on. You stand behind your coach when he is your coach, even if you don't like him or you don't agree with him.

That Stepan quote has to be taken with quite the grain of salt because there is no way he's going to sling mud at his coach in the middle of a locker room interview.

Of course he's not going to slam Torts, but it's easy to say something like," there are many issues with this team right now" or similar. You can not throw your full support behind the coach without actually calling him out. Stepan chose not to do that

Well, Torts or not, this pathetic group of players better get their **** together fast.

Shutout two games in a row. What is Stepan's answer for that?

Stepan doesn't come off to me as a super vocal guy. I have no idea where he stands on Torts. Maybe he is right, maybe he isn't. I have no clue.

Neither do I, but I'm biased. I'm not sure Avery knew what he was talking about half the time while he was here so I'm convinced he's got no idea now :)

I'm all for criticizing Torts but there is something odd about Avery questioning the character of others.

Torts is afraid to talk in the PC. Torts knows he's not doing his job. Players are definitely upset.

Common sense folks. Stepan isn't going to be one of the guys upset with Torts. For starters, Torts is the ONLY pro coach Stepan has had. Torts has gone out of his way to praise Step and give him opportunities. Step needs as many of those opportunities as he can get to leverage himself for his upcoming contract talks.

IF Avery actually has a real source (and to be fair, it's not like he hasn't gone off half cocked before), it would have to be someone who A- knows what it's like to play for different coaches in the NHL and B- knows Avery well enough to ***** about work with him. I can only think of 5 guys on the roster who fit that bill. I can't see Staal, Girardi or Callahan doing anything like that, but the two others (Richards and Henke) happen to be the two who are closest to Avery and have been extremely frustrated this year (Richards by his own play, and Lundqvist by the play of the rest of the team). Frankly, if Avery does have a source in the room, the smart money is the guy in the goal.

This team is damaged. It's lost it's way and Tort's has not coached them thru it. That's a fact. So I'll ask it again. Who can this organization hire to coach this hockey team.

Sather had his cancer surgery recently...I dont know how much he is overlooking this team's current state at the moment as he has some more important thing to think about in his life.

But Torts has got to get the **** out and get someone that the players can respect in there

All i am Going to say is this lineup should be piling wins up. Wechanged this teams character when we lost Dubi Arty and Prust. Changes must be made

Whether they were good or not, they were all a big part of the locker room, and losing them certainly changed the locker room dynamic.

Order of importance, id say Prust, Anisimov, Dubinsky.

Are these three combined worth Nash's output? That was something I debated after the trade was made in July.

Prust was the glue that held the team together, he was friends off the ice with the guys and had history going back to juniors with some of those guys, and he was an ideal Torts player, the perfect bridge for the old and new players on the roster, and filled several roles on the ice. But most importantly he reinforced the identity of the club.

Now the current team is loaded with guys that aren't in their walk years, owe no loyalty to either Torts, or the NYR org. That camaraderie is gone, and Torts in all his stubbornness isn't managing what he has currently, and the rest of the league knows how to defend the Rangers, and has for a while... would say 10 games before the last year's playoffs.

I'm a big big fan of Torts, but if he's been tuned out then we may see a coaching change. If there are a minority of malcontents, then we see trades... and its probably true that guys who've played elsewhere or for other coaches have mailed it in

Trade all the players that do not wham the JAM now!
Fire Sather if he cannot give the coach his perfect players
How hard is that?
Go to the caves of France and see if you can find any old Neanderthal relics that can jump in and contribute to the Flintstone style of nonhockey being played
I mentioned discontent in the locker room a few days ago, naming the player in question, but that was removed from here. mr Avery certainly confirmed that now - no?
I am surprise to see Ms Tortorella is not here on board avidly defending her Daddy btw?
This thread will close soon, but not soon enough hahaha

I want an explanation as to why Brian Boyle gets so many minutes. He has been absolutely horrid this year and bring no offensive skill whatsoever.

Still in 8th place LOL

I still think tis team is capable of a run.

I remember when Renney was fired, the Rangers werent generating any offense. None. Gomez with one to the chest from 30 feet out was about as good a scoring chance the team could generate.

Then Torts came in, preached Safe is Death, and it was like night and day. Even though they lost a couple of games, they were skating, hitting, and pressing.

The Renney firing coincided with the Antropov/Avery arrivals. That team should have beaten the best team in the conference and could have went on a run.

I'm not blaming Torts for this mess. Sometimes you just need to make a change. Jesus Christ the Kings fired a coach midseason and won a Cup.

Get a new coach with a new staff and a new vision. Somebody young.

I think this is the one team where the players need to govern themselves and need autonomy, and the coach facilitates that.

faith is a scary thing. Only when the end is in sight and no miracle is bestowed will faith be dispelled and changes be made. That said, having gone 0-2 outscored 0-6 in the last two, if we continue to under perform and struggle offensively and systematically and slip out of a playoff spot without putting up a good fight (e.g. winning 3 in a row if we're in 9th place with 7 games left), Torts will be a off season decision to either fire him and bring a new guy on board who can work with the team during the summer and preseason or to keep up the faith in his work.

Exactly. Very well said.

Of course you always do that Nash trade, but Sather didn't replace that heart that was lost. Asham, Pyatt, etc, are outcasts and mercenaries, not heart and soul character guys.

I think some people just look at stats and don't get the dynamics of being in the locker room or on a team. When you play with guys who do the dirty work with enthusiasm, stick up for their teammates, bust their butts every shift...it energises the entire team. It gets everyone closer together and raises everyones level of play. The really great muckers and grinders may not get a ton of points, but they turn 60 point guys into 65-70 point guys, they make going to the rink and practice much more fun, and turn a good team into a legitimate playoff threat.
