Really sad the demise is here as I thought we had a great team in the makings this year, but the Emporers clothing hath been revealed. Not a day too soon. Torts ? - he is done now.

No to McGuire, Psycho Mike, Gernander, Messier, Ruff, Bully Burke, Sather and Schoney. Just NO.
We need a hockey lover now, a tactician. Names that interest me are therefore Dallas Eakins, tony Granato ( yes! And we played together a kids btw), anyone named bowman and hold on........... Leif Boork.

Lol Leif Boork. The day he gets namned as head coach of New York Rangers or a coaching job in any other NHL franchise I'll quit hockey.

Otherwise I agree, this team need a coach with a brain for the game, must be able to find a new name in college or the CHL?

I don´t care who the new coach is, as long as he brings Zuccarello back

(sorry... couldn´t resist..)

Didnt it end this way in Tamp for Gentlemen John ? Except they sucked bad enough to get STAMKOS.
Even of Richards pulls a Lazarus ,
Boyle , HALPERN Powe , Miller , Haley ( who I like for his pugnacious attitude ) ASHAM etc can't sniff a goal . Listen to what Chicago and Anaheim coaches and players day when interviewed , " we roll 4 lines and all 6 D " and everyone contributes . This isn't Johnny's fault he's not te GM who built this mess . But ...... If he goes on TV and says he doesn't coach offense and the team struggles the way it does to complete tape to tape passes and on the PP and on the breakout he should be held responsible .

Did you type this with your face?

Feel free to bookmark this comment in case I'm wrong so you can all bump this thread and laugh at me, but I'm calling it:

We will never win the Stanley Cup with Glen Sather as our GM.

Since we're throwing out names, how about Scott Gordon?

2010 Olympic Assistant Coach
Former Islanders Head Coach

Now an assistant in Toronto. Young guy, great tactical hockey mind.

So, in a nutshell...

If the team performs well, every ounce of credit goes to the players.

If the team underperforms, every ounce of scorn goes towards the coach.

Do I have that right?

welcome to professional sports......

and yes it's easy to fire the coach since it's impossible to fire 20 players, that how it's always been.....

Torts MUST GO.....

Good choice or how about Craig Mactavish ? What's he up to these days ?

New coach isn't going to make bad players start scoring goals. Sather destroyed the chemistry of this team.

This is on Sather... he got cocky, thinking certain players were expendable, and "the system" was greater than the sum of it's parts. Losing Prust, Feds, AA, Dubi changed the composition of this team, and it hasn't worked out.

New coach isn't going to change that.

Good points. The way I see it we have the pieces to win, what we are lacking is leadership and strategy which is what the head coach provides. Clearly something isn't working with this team.

One issue I see is every time we lose Torts doesn't take any blame. A good leader should always praise in public and criticize in private. But when the Rangers lose it always seems Torts did everything right but player X is thrown under the bus. That has to wear on the cohesion of a team.

I too think its time for a fresh face at the helm of this team.

Plus, the Rangers close out the season with a very favorable schedule.

I think they turn it around and make the 5th or 6th seed.

No schedule is favorable with the way they are playing. Here are the remaining games and break it into 4 game/week intervals:

Mon Mar 18, 2013 Carolina NY Rangers 7:00 PM ET
Tue Mar 19, 2013 NY Rangers New Jersey 7:00 PM ET
Thu Mar 21, 2013 Florida NY Rangers 7:00 PM ET
Sun Mar 24, 2013 Washington NY Rangers 7:00 PM ET
Two relatively "easy" games
Tue Mar 26, 2013 NY Rangers Philadelphia 7:30 PM ET
Thu Mar 28, 2013 NY Rangers Ottawa 7:30 PM ET
Sat Mar 30, 2013 NY Rangers Montréal 7:00 PM ET
No easy game
Mon Apr 1, 2013 Winnipeg NY Rangers 7:00 PM ET
Wed Apr 3, 2013 Pittsburgh NY Rangers 7:30 PM ET
Fri Apr 5, 2013 NY Rangers Pittsburgh 7:00 PM ET
Sat Apr 6, 2013 NY Rangers Carolina 7:00 PM ET
No easy game
Mon Apr 8, 2013 NY Rangers Toronto 7:00 PM ET
Wed Apr 10, 2013 Toronto NY Rangers 7:00 PM ET
Sat Apr 13, 2013 NY Rangers NY Islanders 7:00 PM ET
Leafs are sliding, Isles always play us tough
Tue Apr 16, 2013 NY Rangers Philadelphia 7:30 PM ET
Thu Apr 18, 2013 Florida NY Rangers 7:00 PM ET
Fri Apr 19, 2013 NY Rangers Buffalo 7:00 PM ET
Sun Apr 21, 2013 New Jersey NY Rangers TBD
Florida and Buffalo, who will sell off
Tue Apr 23, 2013 NY Rangers Florida 7:30 PM ET
Thu Apr 25, 2013 NY Rangers Carolina 7:00 PM ET
Sat Apr 27, 2013 New Jersey NY Rangers TBD
Florida

So, that is 5 games and 3 are versus Florida? 2 with Devils, Penguins, Islanders, and Flyers. 3 against Carolina. That schedule is not favorable. Yes, there is no Boston and less Montreal, but they have faced Tampa 3 times. They have played Buffalo twice and lose once. There are no easy games at this point. I can see a 5th or 6th finish, but they will need to turn this around and either improve their play or acquire some depth on the 3rd line.

if they miss the playoffs this year and they dont start off the season well next year torts will be gone a quarter of the way through the season. i dont see him getting fired before that

I'm watching the "Road to Victory: The New York Rangers Story" on NHL Network right now...I think the team need to see something like this. Watching the Rangers in 1994 win the Cup, to wake up. The majority of them don't seem like they "want it." There's no desire.

Watching it as well.

Could this year be 92-93?

Look around the league.

We have "bad players" but the 3rd and 4th lines for Ottawa, Winnipeg, Buffalo, Malkin less Pittsburgh and co have great players or what? We also must dress a certain type of players because Torts can't do without them. Anyone we have must be great along the boards, since we don't have transition game. If you are in default mode to get players that are great along the boards, you just get less skill.

This is easily the most loaded roster we have had in NY in a really long time and we should definitely be top 3 in the East. I am sorry, but there are no excuses for Torts. He is caught with his pants down facing coaches that just has done a much more prudent job them him. Motivating players is important for sure, but Torts has neglected the X's and O's completely and think he will get away with what worked in 03'. I am sorry, it doesn't. Torts is wrong and 25+ other coaches in the NHL is right on this one. What's annoying is that obvious his ego is standing in the way of him adjusting. And as a NYR fan who has suffered alot over the last 15 years -- its pretty darn annoying to head into another dark era because the ego on that guy.

Anything else then a legit cup run this season is a fiasco, now it look like we have to be lucky to make the PO's.

100% in agreeance with you, Ola. There is really no excuse now. Too many players underperforming. Hell, when has everyone played well under Torts at the same time? We all though in the summer that he would adjust his stupid system, open it up more, to better suit the roster. Instead, I see more congested hockey than I saw last year! We box ourselves into the corner or behind the net and stay there. Puck never gets to the slot, and we don't utilize our defensemen for point shots enough. This roster should not be in 10th place. This roster is better than what the islanders are fielding. It's better than what Ottawa currently has, and those guys are fighting every game, and are currently in 5th place! No more excuses. Torts and his GrindJamSandpaperGritHorriblePPGrind system have to go.

The biggest issue I have with Tortorella is he is just plain stubborn. He refuse to admit his system no longer works. The collapsing zone defense he likes to play just does not work for this THIS team. That worked last year because you had better overall quickness, defensive awareness, and shot blocking ability. You had Prust, Dubinsky, Fedotenko, Mitchell, and even Anisimov because they were molded by this type of system. Now you have Nash, Pyatt, Powe, Halpern, and Miller out there. They are horrendous at blocking shots. And that's ok. BUT it's only ok if they are not playing a collapsing zone defense because that means they are playing the point men tight. This way they don't have to block shots as much, they don't have to be as strong along the boards when our defensemen put the puck into space along the boards hoping the wingers will win the board battle. In fact it plays better to the hand of Nash and Gaborik because they are more likely to get breakaways on fumbled pucks by opposing defensemen. It happened against Pittsburgh where I think it was Despres or Letang who missed a puck and it went out towards the red line. It just seems as though Tortorella is not looking at tape correctly or looking at tape at all. He needs to change the way this team plays defense. They play loose on the points and what ends up happening is chaos in our own end. Constant running around trying to retrieve the puck. Last year's team you didn't notice chaos because even though the point men might have time, guys like Prust and Fedotenko were going to go down and block that shot. Now you have Powe and Halpern who barely go down if at all. Pyatt and Nash are too slow to get to the areas to go down let alone the idea that i wouldn't want Nash going down.

I still think Tortorella is a good coach. But he really needs to reevaluate himself here and then his team.
