Every coach will have their ups and downs. So, in a sense yes, there will never be THE perfect coach, and again winning can do a lot for a guy who otherwise has flaws in his coaching.

I think he was consistently out-coached in every play-off series last year just on his inability to adapt alone when the other coaches were adapting to the Rangers. There's no reason the OTT and WSH series' needed to go 7. I put some of that on his coaching.

I don't like how he handles the team having a bad night, be it benchings, or jumbling otherwise good lines. I don't like his insistence to play some players regardless of mistakes until they are so bad it's unavoidable (IE Richards/Boyle), and bench others after farting during a line change.

I do respect what he got this team to do last year in the regular season, and he definitely deserved every Jack Adams vote he got. However I want to see what he does this year in the playoffs before I decidedly say one way or another if I like him insofar as I think this team can win with him.

"Lack of adjustments" or "inability to adapt" is really just a bunch of BS unless you can explain, in detail, what you wanted to change. Sounds to me you just wanted things to go a different way. Maybe next time he can go out and score goals for the team. Im sorry those series went 7 games in a traditionally tough NHL playoffs when 5 or 6 game wouldve suited you much better. Hopefully he can adjust his way to less games next time.

As for the benchings, first off, players gain stock with any coach. Brad Richards has more leeway than Chris Kreider. Thats just the way it is, and the way it would be with any coach that ever lived. Perhaps more importantly, you dont like when Torts clamps down on his team when things are going poorly? Would you rather the same players go out in the same lines and make the same mistakes? A sort of "you're doin' fine boys" mentality when the team is clearly struggling? If so, I suggest watching some game tapes from 98-04 to quench your desire.

When the number one seed goes seven games with the eighth, how can you not put any of the blame on the coaching? Ultimately it is up to the players to get the job done, sure, but the Rangers struggled with fast teams all season long. Did Torts change the way the team handled that at all? That series had several problems including scoring and momentum swings, but the coaching was not without fault.

I'm not saying a Richards shouldn't have more leeway than a Kreider, but he obviously has guys he trusts more than others. Sometimes he does exactly what you are suggesting by putting players like Richards out there in key situations, especially on special teams, when they are clearly having a bad night. I understand wanting to get your best players going, or out of a funk, but his leash is too long at times.

Struggling is relative, if you are in a 4 game winning streak and the lines aren't clicking after one period, but have been for the prior 12, why mix it up? If they are on a 4 game skid and he still hasn't changed anything, then yes I completely agree.

I actually thought he managed Kreider fine and if you read what I said instead of imposing your Torts apologist agenda on to me your understand I blamed the lack of production from top players and Injuries forced Torts to keep CK on a short leash.
Besides Avery I dislike Torts attitude to media , his handling if the PP or subsequent lack of handling it . His loyalty to re treads and his lack of wanting to give players who don't fit into his box or who have one bad shift a chance . His in game coaching is suspect to me and solely relies on playing a short bench . I dislike Torts for many many reasons

aim2win... aim2win... aim2win

I guess 1st place in the East last year means very little.

Now that the Rangers have the 2nd best winning streak in the NHL ... perhaps we can now focus on the results that Torts brings instead of the how we feel about his shortening of the bench, mixing up of the lines, treatment of Avery, treatment of the media, etc.

Truth is... if Henrik was on his game at the beginning of the season the team would be at the top of the East. The GA is trending great, but mainly because of the subpar start to the season.

I wouldn't hold your breath on that. People around here love to hate him and hate to praise him.

Notice how quiet this thread is now that the team's doing well.

If people around here can't hate on the guy they won't talk about him.

i think it comes down to this..
if you are OK with being more likely to score 2 than 3 and always being in the bottom half in scoring then you are OK with Torts

if you would like the rangers to actually score goals and be a dangerous threatening hockey team that other teams fear playing then you probably want torts fired

Wait, wait, wait.

You're saying you DON'T like Torts?!

Hell, could've fooled me.

If Torts is only going to run two lines at the end of a game in the second match of a back-to-back, Sather better get some people in here that he can trust. I thought he did that with Powe and Halpern, but they rode pine at the end of the game tonight.

I agreed with shortening the bench once we were down a goal. We're not getting a ****ing thing from the bottom 6, so why bother when we need a goal.

What I'm scared of is his failure to adapt to any situation. The only adaption I see is putting goons on the first line.

God forbid he adapts to an in-game situation WITHOUT screwing with the lines. I know we had a Renney-era line generator. Can someone make on for this current roster?

I can't stand Tortorella. Never liked him. I can't say he should be fired, because I honestly don't have any better ideas. If his firing means bringing Lindy Ruff in, no ****ing thanks. I don't watch Whale games, but that coach apparently is no treat either. So I feel like we're stuck with this mediocre child for the time being. Shame.

Hah. Maybe. I don't remember Renney too much. But I remember some offense. I wonder what would've happened with the team if he still coached them now. Oh well, that was a nightmare cause our D blew too. He doesn't know how to adapt without busting up the lines, Torts...

I have no idea to replace him, give him the rest of the season. If he can't turn this team around into next season you need to make a change.

He can be so stubborn that it ends in a loss. Gets out-coached.

This was never more apparent than in the playoffs last year. It's like they won in spite of his idiocy.

"Team's tired, lets shorten the bench even more."

"Defense dropping back, dump and chase anyway."

Moron.

Ouch! Pretty raw interview there. Now where are the people who said that Torts blows a fuse to protect his players and deflect attention away from the room?

Edit: Quite interesting exactly where the MSG feed ends. On the TSN feed, there's an additional 10 seconds where he says "Did you ask them? (gesturing to the locker room) Did you ask them any questions? I don't know why I have to answer those questions. You should ask them those questions on occasion."

Torts can never adjust during a game. He can't even adjust during a playoff series. Never more apparent than last year.

Again the Sens: oh, they have defensemen who can shoot, but also make a great pass? Great. Let's make sure to collapse and give them more time and space!

Against the Devils: Oh, Fatty is pretty good at handling the puck, you say? Let's make sure all of the dump ins go into the trapezoid!
Devils have a good forecheck? Let's make sure to spend an hour behind our net, thinking of a play to transition, when the Devils are sending 2 men in and causing havoc!

With this much talent, our record should be much better. Hopefully we get the 6th seed. That would be great.

Fire Sather...it is the only thing that makes sense at this stage . Let Gorton take over and the trickle down effect will kick in from coaching to the others that were brought here by Sather . Do it TODAY !!! The fans at the games have to be heard...chant FIRE Sather even when we are winning . He has done more harm than good for this team...it all stems from the top and trickles downward . I know he got us McD...but think about everything else he has done....

So we have a coach who took us to the league semifinals....within two games of the Stanley Cup finals...first time ANYTHING has been accomplished here with a team put together by Sather...and we want to fire him 25 games into the next season because his team is 13-10-2?

Torts' classless post-game is the last straw

Ripping into Sam? What is wrong with this schmuck? Ask the guys why they lost? How about your stupid Defense First system hamstringing our capable offense!! Defense First? We have a Vezina Trophy goalie and some of the best D-Men pairs in the league!! You keep ripping the guys publically. "We suck", "Our top guys stink", yea that should really breed some confidence in Gaborik...on the RW..

Bottom line for me and I'm sure many will contest, but the guys have lost faith in the "system" and its hurting their confidence. Their strengths aren't being utilized properly and I wouldn't be surprised if deep down inside their feeling a bit lost and frustrated. Torts needs to go and that CLASSLESS IMMATURE BLAME GAME excuse of a post game was the last straw.

Thanks for letting me vent guys.
