Motivator or not, Torts is a jerk...

Again, the players sure don't think so. And their opinion is what matters. Not some random poster from Nova Scotia.

I don't think it's necessary to calling him out to the media. Stuff like that should be dealt with behind closed doors.

Cool story and all, but it worked very, very well last time when he called Hags out in the media. Amazingly well, actually. He went on a tear shortly after. Perhaps Torts knows what he's doing more than you do. I mean, that's highly doubtful since he's such a clown and everyone on this board can coach better than him and all. But there is the slight chance that he is better at this coaching thing than you are.

Bash Hagelin but I have not heard him saying anything about his golden boy Richards or even Boyle.

Why would he say anything bad about Boyle? He's had a great playoffs.

Boyle was a healthy scratch earlier this season. That seemed to get through to him. Richards has been moved down to the 4th line. Perhaps these guys do not respond well to being called out. We saw that Hags DOES respond very well to it. Torts has different methods for different players. Not sure why you find that so odd.

Hagelin strikes me as the kind of player who will take those words as motivation, nothing more.

so does that mean he will actually get pp time? the only way to prove the coach wrong is for the coach to put him on the pp, which is unlikely to happen since it is anchored by high producing studs like Richards, Girardi, and Nash.

Eehh.. ok?!

I haven't commented on his coaching, I just think it was unnecessary to call out Hagelin.

I think I can understand at least a fraction of what Torts is trying to say.

A player can actually be too fast if he skates/plays/thinks too fast in relation to his team mates.

Handing out a pass to where the receiver should have been, if he wasn't like 3 seconds late ;)

Good point, good point. Maybe we should put Hagelin on the PP with CK. :naughty:

Honestly, you'd have a better chance squeezing water out of a rock than getting Torts to do that.

That is why I don't get the motivation argument. He was saying Hags is terrible on the PP to get him to play better at even strength?

I don't think it's necessary to calling him out to the media. Stuff like that should be dealt with behind closed doors.

And what if calling him out behind closed doors doesn't do the trick? What do you do then? Tortorella's job is to get the most out of his guys. It isn't his job to coddle players' feelings unless that's the best way to get them to play at their best (of which I really don't think there are many players on this team). With some, calling them out to the media is going to be more effective than an absolute closed door policy. I don't believe that a single person who takes issue with this kind of stuff has ever had to motivate individuals in a diverse group of people, or if they have, they haven't done it as well as possible. And I really don't believe that the players react negatively to it.

The same goes for that crap about how he "bashed" Hagelin, but not Richards. This isn't little league, where even the last place team gets a trophy. Not everyone gets treated the same way, nor should they. I'm sure Tortorella knows Richards well enough to know what he does or doesn't respond to.

The best part of this, too, is that Tortorella was incredibly complimentary to him in that segment of the press conference. Saying a guy isn't good (or he stinks, which means the same damn thing) at something isn't the same as saying he's a terrible player. Tortorella is right in an overarching theme there. Some players just aren't suited to a particular role. For Hagelin, that's seems to be a powerplay role.

I agree, too, that Hagelin has been awful in the few looks on the powerplay he's gotten. That the whole powerplay isn't very good isn't the issue. He was asked about Hagelin.

And you clearly don't know anything about our team, our coach, and Hagelin. This worked wonders on him in the past. Don't comment on things you know nothing about.

Exactly. It worked in the past, it will work again.

Same here.

Although why they arent punishing these rookie D is an issue with me too.

Instead of us punishing their n00b defenders, their n00b defenders are punishing us. Classic Rangers.
Should have been a big advantage for us, and they managed so far to make it a wash. Bleh.

I feel like if we simply had 2 set PP units, they'd at least develop chemistry over time, and could potentially perform below-average, rather than like a car crash.

Not sure if this has been said already, but does anyone think that maybe the Hagelin comments were used to keep the heat off of Nash and some of the other players who are under performing?

Unlike last series, we aren't coming back, this time.

Maybe Torts should look in the mirror before he says another player stinks. His coaching stinks. Our PP is laughable.

I would not mind a change, next year, but it will never happen. At least can Sullivan and bring in a PP specialist.

I've seen it tossed around quite a bit, but can someone explain to me what Leetch's credentials are to take over this supposed PP Specialist position?
