Found this funny...

http://washington.cbslocal.com/2013/05/16/adam-oates-says-he-would-beat-john-tortorellas-a-easily/

Lavar: Coach, I just want to know… would you beat him up in a one-on-one situation?

Oates: Yes. Easily.

.....wha???

That conversation escalated rather quickly. Why the flying hell would a reporter even ask a thing like that? And what possessed Oates to even answer? Good grief. Washington definitely needs a huge culture change. No wonder they always choke in the playoffs with that kind of "character." :loony:

What a hacky article. Torts says similar things twice about the Caps whining and that's "going off to anybody that will listen." Oates says he doesn't know that anyone was whining while his captain was saying that the league is fixed. Holtby says the game was easy, then he lets in 5 goals. OV says the Rangers don't hit, then they shut him down for the rest of the series. Instead of learning anything from any of this, Oates goes and says something dumb too.

Like I said before, Torts' on ice strategy needs to be tweaked for sure, but this team has a good culture and a good mindset and a lot of that is because of him IMO.

between the coach, the captain and their fans, washington is a complete joke.

Did Oates ever fight in a game in his entire career?

I was always a huge fan of Oates as a player (aside from 99 and 66 probably the best playmaking center I ever watched) but he was never even close to being tough.

Looking like Lucifer doesn't make you a bad ass.

Just so you know, he gave that interview to a radio show called Lavar and Dukes. That's Lavar Arrington, former Redskins LB, and Chad Dukes, local shock jock from something called "The Sports Junkies" that has been a popular radio program here for a while. Interviews like that are pretty par for the course, particularly with Dukes. They go looking for people to say controversial things. It's the age of EsPN, after all.

Don't think you can classify Lavar Arrington as a reporter. Caps are weak minded. I hope they continue along the same path now that they are in our division.

Wow.

I'll actually say that I think Oates was right to say there wasn't much whining from his team about the ref'ing during the series. I was actually surprised to see in his post game interviews that there wasn't more gamesmanship in terms of complaining about the refereeing.

Now, did Caps players make other dumb comments during the series? Absolutely. Were their fans and their broadcasters insufferable? 100 %. But I thought Oates was relatively mild, even classy compared to the other commentary out there during the series. He went about his business.

Interesting that he actually answered that last question. Don't know what he was thinking. Not really that surprised though - guy had contract/$$ issues with virtually every team he played on when he was in the NHL and clearly had a huge ego.

Then hard to classify Dukes as a reporter either. Figured it was that kind of show.

Ah, so it's one of those 'gotcha' style interviews a la Jim Rome then?

Still a stupid thing for him to put out there, especially as a coach. This isn't 1988 anymore, and these things tend to linger and reappear for years and years. (Look at how often all the Torts blow-ups get replayed.) It's not like Oates has a long coaching resume to fall back on.

Wow, Tortorella rips apart his own player being ineffective on the PP when his whole team "stinks" on the PP. What a clown. Who doesn't stink on the Rangers PP? Maybe you should step up and make an adjustment.

Torts' comments can do two things: wreck a young Hagelin's confidence OR fire him up and get some production. We'll see. Not really sure how I feel about Torts saying that though..

Yeah, I hate that. I like Tortorella when he says "I'm not going to talk about individual players", which he does some times.

Saying a player "stinks" on the power play when YOUR power play is 2/31 can only do more harm than good.

But what ever.

what did he say? that hags stinks on the PP?

Why single out a guy who gets like 20 seconds of PP TIO when you have morons like Beaver who are out there for 1:30 of each power play?

This is an issue I have with Torts. A lot of recent pressers he's been asked about Nash's play and he'll say he's not critiquing players. The man needs to learn consistency

Yeah I can't stand Torts, and the way he behaves during pressers. He gets pissed if questions asked about Nash, and doesn't answer them. And this time he bashed a young player who always works hard.
How many times did he say Hagelin stinks? 10? :shakehead
