Bruins, Kings, Anaheim? Several teams won based on a compilation of talent rather than a single game breaker. Bruins signed Thomas who then found the holy grail and they signed the best FA D man of the last decade. We signed the 1,2,3 and 4 worst FA's period of the last decade. Hard to recover from the top 4 absolute worst FA signings of the last decade. Thats a major contract mistake that hamstrings the team an avg of every 2.5 years. All on Glen
NJ didn't have any major game breaking talent in terms of a top 5 scorer unless you consider Elias there and he's scratching that door alhough obviously they had the D/G and the benefits of a differently structure NHL rule wise.

If we had Nash last year instead of an injured Gabs I think we win the cup. or if we had had Kovalchuk. But we went with gabs b/c that impatient idiot couldnt wait to make the FA splash. Regardless any team can go for a single cup run. I want a team that's top 4 in the east year after year. Had we made the right signings we'd have been THE team. We didn't. All on Glen
 
Our coach is not the only problem we have . Our forward crew are overall still a bit slow and soft IMO and most are offensively challenged outside of a handful and also very easy to defend against with pretty well no pushback from them on the opposing D . The blueline is soft in our crease...more so after a whistle and in scrums and very weak on the offense . Too much of the same...we need a better mix on the blueline core . I would move DZ as he probably has the most upside to other GM's but I am starting to think lacks the quick thinking needed to see the ice on a rush....maybe it is a confidence thing...whatever...it is something because he has the tools...possibly no tool box ???

Somebody offers Hank a big deal when he is up...where will we be then ??? Dolan...fire the off ice clowns and get very serious soon or we have a very scary future ahead of us . The Devils will be on the way up...while we are still on the way down....or holding around 9th in the Conference as per usual LOL .
 
Never considered myself to be a Torts hater. There was things about him that I really liked. In particular, I always felt a players coach just doesn't do well in NY. Things are different here. Lots of distractions. Players can sort of "hide" here and get away with it. When Torts came, I initially thought that you wouldn't hear stories like ones past where guy were surfing on the hoods of cars on their way to a strip club on the night before a game, or you wouldn't have guys missing practice because they spent the night in a NYC sewer...or guys breaking falling and breaking their ankle stumbling down the street after a bender. All stories that are fun to hear but when facing reality are probably part of the main reason this organization as a whole has lacked success while being able to offer the world to the guys that came here to play. I felt that if leadership from a captains standpoint wasn't large enough then you needed a tyrant as a coach. I think it worked...for a while!

Now there is the new problem. This organization has pretty much iced the best team on paper since 1994 yet, nearing the end of this shortened season the club has yet to put it together. They are at times painful to watch. I understand what JT has tried to build here. A system that each and every player fully understands. A system where any player can pretty much jump in and know his role and what is expected. A system where players become interchangeable parts. Like say the Devils of the past decade were. Well this just didn't transpire. So, are the players just that ignorant that they don't have the "get-it" factor or are they not properly coached or taught to understand it. Or is it simply put...the system itself just doesn't work?

I have some reservations on JT as the guy that is going to get them there. I hope he proves me wrong.
 
So, as somebody who has never played organized hockey ( play only mens beer leauge ice hockey and pick up roller through out my life )............can somebody seriously explain the X's and O's on how torts' system works?

I do understand that he has his own system and that the players are reuired to abide by the system in order to play for him.....but I dont get it, i just dont get it.
I know he likes them to play a grinding game, loves his players to play with some jam....... and bring a lunch pail attitude to the ice...........but what the hell is the system doing to styfle offensive players from scoring goals?

Can't you just let the fowards play offensivly and let your defensive players worry about the D ?

If Marion Gaborik was really sick and tired of his system and more so, just sick of John Tortorella overall, than add every other star player on this roster to that list in the near future.

You actually drew up something for the offensive zone?! That's farther than Torts has ever gone with his offensive game plan...

I seriously can't belive his answer to the Philly game was not being able to solve Mason...

But can anyone seriously decipher Torts' X's and O's and the problems they have with it? Or is it just easier to complain and joke about things that aren't the central issue to this team's struggles?

Well, when your system is to grind behind the net it's better to only have two people working the boards, and a third looking for the outlet pass when the two grinding in it.

With this Rangers team, I've noticed, that they have two guys grinding away and the third guy is VERY close to the two guys grinding there for support. It leads to a lot of odd man opportunities against when things go wrong.

I believe it would be better, if Torts is insistent on playing this "dump-and-pray" hockey system that the Rangers seem to be playing, is to send two guys to grind, and one guy to float in between the circles if the Rangers win the puck behind the net. Problem is, when the Rangers win the puck behind the net, they seem very keen on keeping it there, or firing it blind to the point.

The problem is equal parts breakout and shortcomings of the personnel when it comes to opportunities on the rush. The system is not dump and chase. Never has been, never will be.

I think dump and chase is exactly what they're doing. The problem is they're trying to pair a breakout that is based primarily on stretch passes with a dump and chase attack. Those two things don't play well with each other. When you have players circling in the neutral zone for a long pass, they're not carrying the speed they need to chase the puck into the offensive zone.
 
Just noticed Vinny Prospal is CBJ's leading scorer. Not like everyone liked him when he was here and he played well or anything... oh wait, it's exactly like that, and he walked for nothing...
