Love Torts or hate him can we stop using last year to defend him so much? I give everyone credit for a great year but **** its beginning to look more and more like an anomaly.
Torts tome here has been mediocre at best. None of this anything can happen in the playoffs. We aren't winning the cup likethe Kings did.

Yea but you can only think like this if you think we've had a top caliber roster for the past several years. Last year was a team that came together as a sum greater than their parts. I think they overachieved.
I think those other years are right in line with where they should be when you look at the roster. Mediocre.
So, I guess wake me when you find a coach that can consistently make mediocre teams great. Good luck finding that.
i have trouble with this kind of writing. it's all lowercase but still has some punctuation. and it just seems to ramble on and on as though there were several thoughts. but they were all just typed all at once into one big paragraph with no critical thought at all. but even if you tried and maybe space things out a bit and learn how to spell it's still some crazy talk so i don't know, probably not worth the effort i guess.
If you get beyond with grammatical issues, you'll see some really crazy thoughts in the content.
I can't find one, I never suggested I could. I don't pretend to know all the answers here. If I did I'd be making tons of money getting a cup every year. I think this team is pretty talented though, moreso than the ones in the past couple years. Im dissapointed that this team is right back fighting for a spot, seems familiar. I'm just dissapointed in everyone. Sather, Torts, the players. All a let down
I just dont think its entirely fair to say "Oh man, we're back to the status quo" considering how strange this lockout shortened season has been. Its not an apples to apples comparison.

A lot broke right last year. Other teams had injuries to key players, the Rangers won an almost freakishly large amount of one-goal games, and things seemed to bounce their way.
Things are different this year and with the crazy, compressed and intensive schedule and the large amount of "4 point games", I don't find it odd the see this team where they are.
Of course, I was laughed at when I suggested the Rangers could miss the playoffs when this season started.
The Rangers were 10-6-2 against the western conference last year. They gained 22 points out of playing the western conference. Now this year with the shortened season teams have played tighter. There has been no gimme games. Maybe in an 82 game season Torts has this team in the top 4 again. Who knows.
But the issue is, they had/have enough talent on this team to be in that top 4. You can blame the lockout all you want but then why are other teams doing so well? I just don't like the excuses. Pittsburgh has suffered injury after injury to their top players. They made no excuses. And imo they have a weaker goaltending and defense than ours. Is Bylsma a better coach than Torts? I'm starting to think so.

we improved our on-paper roster from last season. only thing left to do is change something about how this team is run... it starts with the coaching staff. is it tortorella? is it sullivan? are they a package? if one goes do both?
Well, you've been around long enough to know the Rangers are capable of missing the playoffs in any season

93-94: Win Cup
94-95: Squeak into the 8th spot in another weird lockout season
I see no reason to demand consistency from the coach when the Rangers have been an inconsistent organization since I started watching them 25 years ago.
Its stuff like this that really gets me. You're just glossing over something that has about a million sub-layers...and then putting the burden right onto the coaching staff. Its disingenuous.

If the Rangers make the playoffs, I say that Tortorella should get a brief reprieve. Otherwise, he simply needs to go. I had posted this in the prior thread on 3/25, but feel it needs repeating:
In the "Post-Lockout Era," only 1 coach with a tenure greater than 3 seasons has won a Stanley Cup (this is Tortorella's third full season, btw):
History is not on JT's side here and from what it seems this season the team is flat-out underachieving while on his watch. He's made HUGE strides in getting this team to this level (post-Renney mess), he might not be the one to get us to the next level. This offense should not be THIS bad. The Power Play should not be THIS bad. As several people have pointed out, he's a better motivator than tactician. If he's not motivating the players and getting them ready to start games or they've simply tuned him out (read: Gaborik), then Slats/Gorton/whomever needs to start actively searching for his successor. "Safe is death" and "instinctive hockey" were promised and we've never seen that under this coach's watch.

It's fine that you disagree, but the fact of the matter is that this team's play is illustrating that they are trending in the wrong direction. I know there is nowhere to go but down when you're the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference, but you've seen how this team has been inconsistent all season. Sometimes players/teams need a new voice, or a message or a system.
This Rangers team appears to have peaked last year or regressed this year. For the life of me, I can't figure out if it's one, the other or a combination of both, which is why I'm torn on whether I'd like to see this team coached by John Tortorella.
With how well-guarded the Rangers are with closed practices, one can only go by Tortorella's actions/expressions on the bench during games and how he speaks to the media to see what kind of tone he sets. Those "types" of coaches tend to burn players out. Without looking to see who the Stanley Cup winning coaches replaced, I can't tell you if that was the case in those instances. Trends are just that, which was what I was attempting to illustrate, but the fact remains that newer coaches have had more of an immediate impact since the end of the last lockout.

Not entirely, but it's fair to say that the same issues have existed for the majority of the last several years. Awful power-play and a lack of intensity on the ice being the two primary issues. I don't think you can write off as much to the lockout as many people would like.

For a group who likes to talk about the rangers so much you guys don't do too much listening to the rangers. Torts has personally given you a lot more to go on between 24/7, radio appearances, and the MSG behind the bench show. Also, listen to what players have to say about him. He's not the caricature some of you make him out to be. He's brought along a lot of guys over his career and he has more than just "yell" in the playbook. He's an emotional and honest guy, but he gives out a ton of positive reinforcement. You guys seem to want a cheerleader, but those guys get tuned out even faster because if praise is that easy to come by it becomes meaningless. When torts goes over to a player and gives him a pat on the back, that's meaningful. And frequently his "negative" public comments actually show faith in a player's ability. When he says he expects more from a guy, that shows he has faith that guy has more. That's incredibly positive. It would be negative to say, yeah that guy is doing all he can when what he's doing isn't impressive.
I find it very strange that a team with such an intense coach can so often play for loooooong stretches at a time with no intensity whatsoever.
