Didn't get a scholarship, or at least a full-ride athletic one. Pretty sure Ivy-league schools still don't give out full athletic rides. Granted, if you can get in they have very favorable loan programs due to their endowments.

Yesterday, Button was saying he sees him as a very similar player to Andrew Ladd potential wise. So obviously, all teams should take a chance if all it takes is a 2-year max-bonus ELC. He may not be worth all this attention, but getting a guy who will be a top 30 prospect in most rankings is worthwhile.

thanks, been looking for a comparable all day. That certainly makes him worth pursuing without having to give up assets

If he comes to the Leafs it's just gravy.

They don't need him, but it would be nice to have another good piece.

If I were Vesey, I think I'd take Toronto over Boston just based on where the teams are at. Toronto's a young team on the rise and Boston's an old team heading the other way.

Players becoming UFAs after 4 years in college isn't a loophole. A CHL player would also be a UFA if he chose to stay in juniors for 4 years (drafted at 18, doesn't sign; goes back into the draft at 20, doesn't sign -> UFA at 22). Staying in college for 4 years and earning a degree is just far more attractive than playing 4 years of junior and earning nothing.

Two errors with this. CHL players can't stay there past 20/21 (depending on when they turn 20/21). And those that do stay for their overage season have likely played 5 years in the CHL and are still not 4 years removed from their 1st NHL draft. Thus at the very least after playing 4-5 years in the CHL they would have to either go to the AHL (if they can) on an AHL only contract or go to Europe for a year or two to have the required seasons to reach UFA status. That's a lot different then just staying in college/university for 4 years while earning a degree.

yup exactly ... ya they don't give the "full ride" scholorships and all that but they do take care of you in other ways. I have a few friends that played Ivy League for hockey and they paid absolutely nothing. Not one cent came out of their pockets

I don't really get why location seems like the be all and end all for this kid. Any NHL player is going to have to spend a large portion of the season on the road, for one thing.

For another thing, if he loves Boston so much, he gets the whole summer off to spend there and see his friends and family.

You would just think there are a lot more important factors to consider, but he seems to be placing the highest priority on location above all else.

I have heard that his father is battling cancer, which is obviously very sad, but where did people learn this information? I've only seen that posted here.

His fathers cancer diagnosis is public information, as is his feelings towards staying closer to home as stated in any number of his interviews past and present. it is also something that those who grew up in the Massachusetts hockey community alongside him or against him know for a fact about his family from witnessing it first hand. It's family first, period. "Closer to home" doesn't automatically equate to Boston, just means a max of a 4 hour flight or less to get home is my guess. Hoping it's Boston, but we shall see...

you can get to California in 5 hours from Boston so pretty much the entire US right

your premise though, I think is correct. 41 Home games will still be in Boston...

That's because of our wonderful NCAA and their rules. I'm not sure who's more crooked, FIFA or NCAA or IOC. Ivy leagues I believe fall under very similar rules as the D3 schools and D2's playing in D3 conferences - no athletic money allowed. At all.

No you can't. You can get from California to Boston in 5-5.5 hours, but not the other way around...not on a commercial jet.

As one who has lived on both coasts and makes that flight regularly - it is never that easy and between getting to airport, through security, etc. it quickly becomes a 8-10 hour trip. He's completely disinterested in going beyond the Mississippi.

Yep, they just call it "merit aid", but on the down side, there's no Red Shirting if you get hurt. There's no guarantee of keeping that money if you get hurt (happened to my son in lax, career ending injury end of sophomore season, following school year his aid went from a 95% package to 65%). Daughter had to give up her D2 softball money in order to also continue playing hockey because they joined a D3 conference. Good times.

Chip Alexander says Ron Francis has been in contact with Vesey's agent.

I would guess that 29 GMs, or at least all the Eastern teams, have been in contact with Vesey's agent, as any GM worth his salt would at least give it a try. Would love for Vesey to do something totally unexpected and sign with someone like Carolina just to see people's reactions, but I recognize that the chances are slim and none.

Kid had all this time to decide on a team, AND STILL HASN'T MADE A CHOICE ? SMH. It can't be about money so for me, It's about being a drama queen. You're not worth this drama !

I don't think teams were allowed to pitch him until last night at midnight (someone correct me if I'm wrong), so there's probably a few days of diligence to do and courtesy to extend to the teams that would make a pitch

Honestly, I think it comes down to 4 teams.

Pittsburgh, Chicago - Two very good teams with room in their lineup.

Toronto, Buffalo - Two teams that are going to be very good, very soon.

There's nothing about a New Jersey, a Boston, a Detroit that would get me to take a deal from them over one of the 4 teams above.

Lol he just became a FA today. He hasn't even met with all the teams he's going talk to. The only reason this is getting attention and what you call "drama"' is because it's mid August and there's not much else going on in the hockey world to talk about.

Agreed. This is pretty much what I'd do if I were Vesey. And of those 4, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and Toronto are basically equal distance from Boston and his home. Buffalo and Pittsburgh would be faster, since there is no customs involved.

He's got the benefit of being a wanted commodity. Blake Wheeler visited a few teams/cities before making his decision five days after he became a free agent. Is it so much being a drama queen as it is making an informed decision?

He waited this long to be able to talk to teams and you expect him to make a decision within 12 hours while most people are sleeping? Vesey probably has an idea of who is ideal targets are, but there's really no harm in getting pitched by other teams. If you were buying a car, would you buy the first one you test drove or would you try out a few even if you already figured you knew which one you wanted?

There's not exactly a big difference between signing on August 16th or signing on August 21st. Training camp is still gonna start in mid-September.
