Told Islanders are right in contention for Jimmy Vesey with other finalists. Close to home. Good fit with young forwards.

This is interesting.
I'd be surprised if it wasn't NY, NJ or BOS.
I think the 'close to home' aspect is too much ; Boston if he wants the spotlight, pressure; NJ if he wants to ease into the league; and NY if he wants a bit of both worlds (I or R).

The latest on NYI makes me wonder - seems like a decent spot; rising team and less craziness.

Living in Brooklyn, I can confirm it's a 'decent spot'. The food alone win this one.

3:17PM: Joe McDonald said that going into the meetings today the Leafs, Devils and Rangers were the teams that most felt were the leaders to sign him. (TSN 1050)

Kevin Hayes has been working out with Vesey and trying to push him toward the Rangers. (TSN 1050)

3:14PM: John Buccigross said on TSN Radio this morning that the big three that he has heard for Vesey are the Rangers, Devils and Leafs. (TSN 1050)

He hadn't heard Bruins and Sabres for a while until recently and that the Rangers are the "one team that is said the most." (TSN 1050)

He's going to choose Edmonton.

Don't think he is going West. From all the speculation we've heard, I believe it will be a team based in the North East.
Boston,Buffalo, any New York team as the front runners.

Maybe it's unfair, but I hope this kid busts. I don't really like what he's doing/did to nashville. I understand its within his rights, but it's also within my right to hope he busts because of it.

Does anyone have a good comparable for Vesey in terms of NHL upside? I haven't seen anyone try to peg him yet - seems like most want to say non-elite but solid top 6/top line winger with size and who plays a good two way game.

Does somewhere in the James Neal/JVR/Bobby Ryan with good defense echelon seem about right if he turns out?

Haha so all of these NHL teams are making pitches to sign a guy who's best case scenario is an AHL/NHL tweener?

They're making pitches on someone who quite likely will be a top 9 NHL forward. But then Patrik Stefan was also drafted 1st overall, so who knows how exactly these kids will pan out long term.

Ya I was asking if anyone had an NHL comparable for his upside (ceiling) as I've only seen a few highlight reels, not for what he was exactly going to turn out to be

Detroit made a pitch but they were told that Vesey would prefer to stay closer to home.

Looks like Chicago might be off the list now.

Ya that just looks like an excuse to let Detroit down easy.

I still think he ends up choosing Boston.

What's interesting is how many people are attacking the guy for doing what he's allowed to do. He owed Nashville absolutely nothing. Nashville didn't make him work hard, Nashville didn't teach him how to play hockey. He worked hard, finished his degree at Harvard and is now being rewarded for it.

And I don't even want to hear the "he should be loyal to the team that drafted him" ********. Let's say he didn't develop well, would you expect Nashville to honour their decision to draft him and sign him? No, right? Yet, when he does the same thing it's an atrocity.

There's such a double standard on this site. When a team does it, it's just business. When a player does it, he's the devil.

Doing something that is within the rules means someone lacks character?

News flash, GMs lie all the time too. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

Vesey was offered a contract AND roster spot like 15, 16 months ago.

If Connor McDavid or Auston Matthews decided to exploit the "rules" by going to Sweden for two years instead of signing with the teams that drafted them, so they could re-enter the draft, would you think as highly of them?

Sometimes being close to home matters more than anything else.

I've known more than a few people who have turned down full-rides to schools in order to stay closer to home. Same with jobs.

Winnik is a useful player

Not saying he isn't. I especially like Winnik's game but I also wouldn't expect to see months of banter about where Winnik would sign. This suggests that expectations are high and I just think he's more than likely not to live up to them.

Also, how would you feel if Winnik only signed with your team if he got PP time and minutes with Auston Matthews? It changes everything, doesn't it?
