And McKenzie as well. I think all those guys are lousy at ranking/predicting/valuing prospects. If Button was any good at it, he'd still be working in the NHL.

What they do well is gossip, so I do take the 3 of them at their word on behind the scenes gossip. But as far as taking any of them as any authority on prospect ranking. No. Just no.

Of all the media guys, the ONLY one I give any credence to with regards to prospects whatsoever is Pronman

Blah totally disagree on Pronman. Did he finally atleast start going to the rinks to actually watch games or still just cherry picking everyone else's stuff?

Bruins are 1 of 3 teams in the league who haven't made a trade this year and so far I'm fine with that.

He at least puts some work into it and realizes the value of analytics when analyzing prospects. The others are nothing more than a herd of sheep regurgitating their own bile. But I wouldn't put Pronman as gospel either.

The best 'lists' are made by the teams of that draft most succesfully

Agreed.

Unless the trigger is pulled on Faulk, Landeskog or someone else it appears that the Bruins think that Julien was the problem and that they are now a NHL playoff team.

At this time last year on March 2nd,(had to go back and find this thread)

http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showthread.php?t=2039851

...the Bruins were given 85% odds of making the playoffs. We all know what happened then.

Thankfully, this schedule looks much more forgiving than last years but it still brings to light how quickly those odds turn on a team that isn't a real playoff team.

Hopefully Donny looks at the team and remembers, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. " Team streaked before the deadline last year, team is streaking around the deadline this year. Hopefully has a different outcome as last year, but we need to be cautious. Optimism is ok, just needs to be cautious optimism.

No moves > Rentals

It's tricky, Sweeney needs to improve the team now, without hurting the team tomorrow. If he can do both, I am all for making moves. Otherwise, he needs to stay the course he set out when he inherited the team. And not deviate like he did last trade deadline.

But you just glossed over my entire post.

When the prospects are good NHL players, Bergeron is not going to be one of the best 200 foot players in the NHL anymore. Rask may not be elite anymore, if you think he is now. Chara will be well into retirement.

I mean when exactly do you think these blue chippers will be good NHL players?

I've always struggled with this point and really disliked 'standing pat' as they age. I watched the sudden decline of the Sedins and company take place rapidly and none of the prospects ready to take on their roles (Horvat is the only one providing a replacement for the exited Kesler).

Does this feel like a team/GM who really feels pressure to make the playoffs? If he felt pressure to make the playoffs, wouldn't he be adding to this roster, and not just the JAG rental guys? We have Adam McQuaid on our 2nd pairing!!!!

I think the "playoff mandate" was largely PR ******** for the fans benefit. Surely JJ wants to make the playoffs and maybe heads will roll, but instinct tells me if Sweeney really felt he needed to make the playoffs to save his job he wouldn't be sitting on his hands for the last 18 months. He's clearly passive and probably overanalytical by nature, but you have to think he'd be much more aggressive if he felt he needed to save his job.

Don't get me wrong...you're almost certainly right that they'll keep Chara as trading him would take real stones and go against the passive management plan. Also it would cut their playoff chances by a lot. But it could be the best move for them.

Bolded x1000. To me that's all it ever was. Actions speak louder than words....and for some reason that stupid, throwaway PR comment has gotten way more traction than it ever merited. Do people seriously think Sweeney (or any GM) would, or should, be fighting for his job after being on the job for 21 months? Average GM tenure in the NHL is 5.5 years, with a median of 4 years, and the low end of the median figure is likely skewed by "interim" GM's like Jeff Gorton, Jim Clark, Cliff Fletcher etc, who register "0" years.

Exactly what I have been saying all along which a lot of people don't get here. If you wait for all these "prospects" which who knows how good they even are or how long they will take, none are really standouts with MAYBE the exception of mcavoy.

We have an aging core so by the time the "kids" are ready our "core" will be depleted and old.

Sweeney keeps saying stay the course but what is the course??

This draft is weak and I want to see Sweeney make some good hockey deals. Shed a contract, maybe make a GOOD move:

That being said there still 22 hours left so maybe I'll eat my words.

Let's get into the playoffs so we can see what Pasta Vatrano Spoons C Miller have got and get some experience. It's never a bad thing to make the playoffs unless your getting a top 3 pick in a good draft and that we are not.

Only team that IMO beats Boston in 5 or less is Washington

I think it means that he will have a press conference.

Of course he's going to hold it during warmups so some of the media will have to miss it so they can get the lineup to us:shakehead

Maybee to say he isn't making any trades,we're gonna win or loose with what we have.

I don't know about that. He gets a lot of ears regarding the draft prospects on TSN. I don't think he is any higher or lower than Maguire.

He is tasked with compiling a list and ranking for draft entry eligible players with TSN. He also covers a lot of junior games, more scouting than broadcasting. He will do on air colour commentating for some national and international events (ie: Ivan Halinka tournament, major midget champiomship, etc). Seems to just have an annoying quailty about him during his time on air. Can get carried away with being a little over the top in selling his preferences/selections.

Pierre LeBrun just said on TSN Montreal 690 that the NHLPA lobbied to get the trade deadline moved from Feb 28 to Mar 1 due to there being so many games being scheduled tonight.

I like the idea of getting Halak at 50% retained if he can be had cheap, but also thinking maybe Budaj who I know was just traded to Tampa Bay, but possibly an offer of Khudobin and/or mid prospect someone like Fitzgerald or Grezlcyk could be enough. I like Budaj as a backup I think he could do very well for the Bruins.
