No one is questioning what brooks is doing.
They’re questioning if he knows what era of hockey this is.
Brooks is a joke because he doesn’t understand how hockey has changed. Not because he doesn’t do actual reporting.
Doesn't change that we're the pot calling the kettle black. He might be a hack, but that's his job.

All three of his coaches have had issues with his work ethic and motor and there's never been even a single Instagram post by the organization of him staying after practice, working out in the gym, doing skating drills in the summer, etc.

It is what it is at this point. And it's not them, it's him.

Rightly or wrongly, I think Vince is looking at his effort on that goal against the other night and then marrying it to Lavi’s comments about backchecking

It’s just a weird vibe with Laf all around and sorta seems like it’s gonna come to a head at some point this year one way or another
I don’t disagree that it looks like Laf half assed it on that goal. Lavi tho wasn’t happy with the entire teams effort not just Laf.
I’m not rushing to judgement on Laf or the team for a little while as most of us expected a learning curve. Getting used to a system takes time, and this is gonna be a slow start.

But it’s also more than a little ridiculous that people say Laf puts in no work, and gets fat in the off-season, comments like that, because he doesn’t post his workouts on social media. The expectation is that he puts in the work, and from his comments to reporters it sounds like that’s what he did.

He’s not quoting anyone, it’s his own personal opinion of the situation from his last podcast episode. That quote there is also cutting out important context to make it super clickbaity.

It’s not that hard to transcribe a 30 second audio clip. Those types of post are the lame shit you see on random hockey instagram accounts looking for views.

Vince even said himself from his discussions with Laf that it sounded like he worked hard on his skating and other areas of his game this summer. Laf mentioned he was working with Dawn Braid (skating coach) in Montreal during one of his interviews a week or so ago. He hasn’t looked good this preseason, so it’s not an excuse for him, but the rest of the team sans like 4 players has also looked horrible.

I just listened to his podcast and that quote is where it is pulled from - however whoever through that together took the liberty of twisting the quote to make it seem worse than what Vince was saying.

He said that Lav hasnt outwardly said anything about Laf's lack of effort but the demotion in practice may point to that

I should've known better. That's the nature of media these days, where reporters have their own brand to cultivate, with podcasts, etc., when they're not doing their day jobs. And people, even outlets, just freely quoting, linking to, or extracting clips from each other. Back in the day, one media outlet would never even acknowledge or mention another outlet on the air.

Thats not what we’re doing.
We’re not being hypocritical here. We’re commenting that Vince made a statement based on inferences and that he’s just feeding a narrative.

Pot calling the kettle black is about hypocrisy.
You brought brooks into a conversation that had nothing to do with him, inserted an incorrect statement about why we attack him, and now are saying we’re hypocritical.

You’re only cementing peoples opinions that you’re brooks…

I did say it was an aside. I know Brooks has nothing to do with the Vince stuff being taken out of context. Brooks has been attacked for being a hack. He writes op-eds on the team. We post op-eds here.

Yea but you intentionally make me laugh, Larry on the other hand…

Sure. But he’s a hack because he has shitty opinions, not because he doesn’t do reporting.

Also we post op-Ed’s here, but brooks are mostly to point and laugh. Dude hasn’t made a valid hockey point in years.

I agree with that. Opinions are like, what's the word?.... Everybody's got one.

It doesn't help that Brooks doesn't know how to technically write either. Run-ons with long awkward phrases. Starting every piece with "Regarding the Rangers..."

Larry 100% does the same thing we all do. I often get the feeling he pulls ideas from these very boards for his articles. The only issue with Larry, as someone pointed out, is that what he injects of his own is often a little archaic in today’s league. I genuinely believe writing as many articles as he does, Larry truly does get some of his musings directly from these boards. We are the same. He’s just what we call “a dinosaur” when it comes to his own takes.

I'm listening to the podcast right now. Vince sounds very fair to me.

Says Laf has been all over his mentions (twitter?)
Says the Bread-Troch-Laf line was responsible for 3 goals in game
Says that line is unlikely to play together again.
Says Laf was given a chance to play RW on top line by coach.
Says Laf simply has not done enough to seize that opportunity.
Says it can not be argued that Laf has not had a poor camp so far.
Says Bread and Mika have struggled as well but they are established.
Says Laf has more to proof but is not showing urgency.
Mentions not skating hard on back check.
Says he understands that it is preseason.
Thinks Laf is letting opportunity slip through his hands.
Says that can change at any time.
Says Lav seems to move away from him in practice.
Says lots of fans asked about Laf's offseason.
Says fans may go too far and make things personal.
Says (fans?) negativity can get out of control.
Says the bigger issue is work ethic on ice not training in the offseason.
Says Gallant was talking about the on ice work ethic last December.
Says the going all out effort by Laf has not been consistent with him.
Says the work ethic concerns were 2 coaches in a row.
Lav has not mentioned his work ethic.
Lav seems to be leaning against Laf on the top line.
Again more about work ethic on ice not offseason.
Says in talking to Laf he seems to have worked a lot on skills in offseason.
Rangers want Laf to grab that opportunity with both hands.
Looks like KK will replace him on the top line for now.
Laf not playing on Wed is not a big deal. Played 3 of 4 previous games.
Laf will probably play on Thursday.
Laf will play both LW and RW.

I don’t think any one expected Laf to be glued to the top line, but top 6, and that Kakko deserved top line, as he showed more last season overall.
But I’d say those comments are fair, and not as over the top as the statement appeared.
Also if Laf says he worked on skills in the off season, then the question is , are the comments about his work ethic accurate or just perception.

I can't comment about Laf's offseason because I do not have any specific information about what Laf did or did not do.

I will say sometimes young guys think they are working hard and that is not really the case. So is working hard 5 days a week 4 hours a day? Or is it twice a week for 1 hour a day? Gary Roberts mentioned this. He went from a guy that was not working hard as a young player to a guy known as one of the hardest workers in the NHL.

everybody should’ve seen his constant goofing around and antics despite mediocre performances as a troubling sign.

Wow I had not seen anyone calling out the effort that directly. Is it deserved? Is it over due? If it is deserved than Drury and Lav should either speak to Laf directly or to his agent. I have long believed that having a great motor is just as much a talent as shooting...maybe more. I really hope Laf gets the message from somebody. It hurts us all if Laf does not succeed here as a NYR. I do understand a 19-21 year old not being mature enough to work hard at a job but it will be really terrible for us as a NYR franchise if he does not find that motor this season.
I mean, how many HF posters have said he doesn't move his feet. He looks lazy. He's not hustling. His defense has gotten worse? What is he doing during the offseason? (Don't know. Maybe he trains his ass off. Maybe he doesn't.)

We've said it. Some choose not to listen. Maybe it's not work ethic and it's more processing the game. His take is piecing it together as work ethic. But it's still all there however you want to put it.

This is a team wide problem however, not isolated to one player.

Now that we found Laf, what are we gonna do with him? --Heavy D

Laf dropped into our laps. Almost wish we could've have declined the pick in hindsight.

Drury needs to isolate the draft scraper to those with fire in their bellies, not food.
